I think as well that a number of people with more left wing views have already moved on from Labour, hence the increase in numbers for the Green party.
There are also a number of very small new groupings who fielded candidates. These people are acting for themselves now, rather than waiting for the Labour party.

But people say Labour don’t have policies. Now, I really like the Green Party and what they stand for environmentally but I haven’t got the faintest idea what their policies are on other subjects eg the economy, social care etc etc And I rather think that goes for a lot of people that have started voting for them.

It wasn't exactly a resounding success for Labour in these local elections was it.
They gained 3 councils in London and lost 3 councils in London, so no net gain.
Although the Conservatives lost a high number of seats, they went in the main to parties other than Labour, Lib Dems, Green, independents and a new party called "Aspire" in Tower Hamlets.
Unless Keir Starmer can make more of an attempt to either:
unify the party as he promised,
collect many many more Conservative votes, or
make himself more likeable
he is going to have trouble holding on to his leadership.
Wes Streeting and Lisa Nandy are already positioning themselves, and this is even before Andy Burnham is in a position to make another bid.

If he is serious about purging the entire left wing of the party he will have to find replacements for them.

The so called far left are in no position to act against Keir Starmer. He has been in position for over 2 years, he cannot shift the blame on to anyone else now.

Mark Drakeford seems a likeable man who actually cares about people, he is perceived to be more left wing than Keir Starmer and is considerable more popular and more secure in his position.

As local elections were only being held in under half of English local authorities, and many Tory Shire counties such as mine, were not voting I think very little can be deduced from the results.
More meaningful obviously in Wales, Scotland and NI.

What planet are you on Grany? Mark Drakeford wasn’t first minister until 2018, and is, and always has been his own man. Corbyn was unpopular here after 2017, the public don’t associate Drakeford with him at all. There was a Tory surge in the general election in 2019 whilst Labour retained control of the Welsh Government and improved results under Starmer’s UK leadership in 2021- Wales has been Labour since the beginning.

For those who may be interested, can I just clarify that the NI election result was not a resounding victory for SF, but a dismal failure for DUP, who lost votes mainly to Alliance.
