According to that well known publication of all things in the news ?, otherwise known as The Mail, HRH us going to decide at the 11th hour whether or not she will be able to deliver the said speech. I'm sure she doesn't care what I think, but it would seem time for Charles to take up the slack.

Joesoap Tue 10-May-22 18:43:14

Oh dear this isnt a good thread today, leave the poor Queen alone, if everyone had waitied they would have heard the Queen wasnt going to Parliament today.
She is old enough to do as she wishes, she is doing what she said she would do all those years ago 70 to be exact, she would serve her country to the end.
Now stop squabbling please childern.

So!

What did posters think of The Speech?

There were some headlining announcements, which are quite scary. Apart from the improvements to tenants' rights, there was nothing which will address people's concerns about the cost of living and workers' rights.

And often not even then.
As I have said so many times, why not use a wheelchair fgs if this is ‘only’ a sporadic mobility issue?

I agree. No reason other that I can think of.

Anniebach Tue 10-May-22 18:20:21

Yes, I have a wheelchair, cannot walk or stand, some days I can’t use it for reasons I choose not to make public

Yet again - what is wrong with using a wheelchair if she needs to? Anyone got an answer?

Probably not because we do not know the full details of any medical conditions she may or may not be suffering with

vegansrock Tue 10-May-22 18:17:20

I don’t think there have been any nasty comments about her , questioning her ability to do the job due to her great age is not a “nasty” comment. The fact that she is unable to fulfil recent engagements demonstrates that fact - frailty at the age of 96 is to be expected and it is no shame to admit it. I’m not a fan of the monarchy but have no personal feelings about HM, I dislike all the forelock tugging and thinking she is somehow marvellous just for being 96.

Nannapat1 Tue 10-May-22 18:07:03

Maddyone, the age to which one is able to work surely depends upon the nature of the job. Some very physical jobs certainly may not be doable, but those involving the mind, thought processes, might well be. Many public figures work into their 90s.

She isn’t going to abdicate. Hard luck anyone who thinks she is.

Joe Biden is a lot older than Charles and appears less fit yet he is President of the US. Putin is 69.

Well I support the Queen and think she's done a wonderful job over all the years. I really don't like the way this post is going and some of the nasty comment about her. Shameful.

I totally agree. She is doing everything that does not involve a lot of physical manoeuvring. She is still carrying on the usual requirements of a monarch - video talks and the official box she has always dealt with. For goodness sake just because she is not in tip top physically she is supposed to hand down her role which she promised to hold until the end of her days to Prince Charles. She is 96 for goodness sake. She is a marvel. She is quick witted andI think herCbristmas speech was the most heartfelt I have heard her give. I remember Prince Charles being born (on aFriday) and I watched her Coronation at the age of 11. To hear these throw away opinions about her.being forced to give up just because she isn’t mobile is unbelievable unless it is to understand it is coming from those too young to appreciate her life.

Anniebach Tue 10-May-22 17:41:04

No one’s life is at risk because the Queen is 96

I suggested that maybe she should retire, not because of her age, but because of her physical problems which are making it difficult/impossible for her to carry out most of her duties.
I think she deserves a rest, although I don't suppose she would agree with me. At 84, I fervently support the rights of the elderly to do whatever they want. Including the Queen for whom I have the greatest respect.

I wonder if you would fervently support the rights of a 96 year old surgeon to operate on you, or a 96 year old pilot to pilot a plane you were travelling in, or a 96 year old taxi driver or bus driver to drive you, or a 96 year old dentist to treat you and fill your teeth. What about a 96 year old carer or nurse to look after you if you were ill? Or 96 year old fire officers or police officers? Or a 96 year old captain of a cruise ship you were on? Maybe 96 year old painters and decorators or electricians?
If it’s ageist to suggest the Queen should retire or hand over, why is it not ageist to not allow these people to continue to practice their professions?

The establishment any thousands of royalist are geared up to celebrate her 70 years on the throne next month, I can't see her abdicating till afterwards.

As far as I know Her Majesty has only ever taken time off from her duties because of illness or pregnancy, if that's not devotion to duty I don't know what is.

She never went on holiday?

Those of us who had to work for a living only took time off when we were ill as well.

Happysexagenarian Tue 10-May-22 16:28:33

I’m sure all the rest of us stayed away from work if we were unwell and the Queen is perfectly entitled to do the same.

Coast I agree with you!
As far as I know Her Majesty has only ever taken time off from her duties because of illness or pregnancy, if that's not devotion to duty I don't know what is.

She vowed to serve her country for the rest of her life and that's clearly what she intends to do. Good for her. She must be finding her recent problems very frustrating. At 96 of course age is catching up with her, that doesn't mean she should be thought of as redundant! I'm sure we wouldn't like it.

I hope she'll be able to attend at least one or two of the Jubilee celebrations. Perhaps she could have a 'Queen-Mobile' or a very regal mobility scooter to give her a little freedom again. I for one hope she'll be around for a few more years yet, her mother certainly had a long innings.

BTW did anyone else think that Prince Charles seemed a little short of breath while reading The Speech this morning? Perhaps he's still suffering the ongoing effects of COVID.

Daisend1 Tue 10-May-22 16:22:50

Once we no longer have our present queen, as far as royalty is concerned any one can have the job .No one in my book like in the words of the song '*ever*do it better'.

DaisyAnne Tue 10-May-22 16:20:07

Your opinion grannymags but not how it works under our constitution. You don't get to choose so I should try to learn some patience.

grannymags Tue 10-May-22 16:10:25

Its just pathetic to see her clinging on to a position shes no longer able for she should retire gracefully and pass on to charles and camilla

Calendargirl Tue 10-May-22 16:08:46

I thought Camilla’s suit was navy. She looked very smart.

I think the Queen wore ‘normal’ clothes the last time this event was held. She too looked lovely.

Eloethan Tue 10-May-22 16:03:46

I am definitely not a royalist and don't really care who reads the speech as, has been said already, it is written by the government.

I have no particular affection for the queen but I do believe that she feels a sense of duty, albeit to what I consider to be an outdated monarchical system. It seems rather callous of people to suggest that she is now of no use constitutionally and should pass her responsibilities on to Charles, who, in my view, is not exactly a shining example.

My feeling is that the queen should continue for as long as she is mentally able and then this system should be ditched and replaced by something that aspires to equality and justice for all, rather than deference to unearned privilege. Of course, I recognise that this is very unlikely to happen since most of the media support the current system unquestioningly.

Honeysuckleberries Tue 10-May-22 16:03:42

I think we’ve all missed the biggest question of the Queen’s speech today.
Why was Camilla in a black suit?
I thought they all wore white long gowns, well the women anyway. I remember pictures of Diana and Camilla in long evening type gowns. Why the change?

Grany Tue 10-May-22 16:01:43

Hereditary prince in a ridiculous Ruritanian uniform on a golden throne in Parliament’s unelected chamber reading out a Government’s annual plan.

Welcome to modern Britain.

The future already looks dated
