Once we no longer have our present queen, as far as royalty is concerned any one can have the job .No one in my book like in the words of the song '*ever*do it better'.

As far as I know Her Majesty has only ever taken time off from her duties because of illness or pregnancy, if that's not devotion to duty I don't know what is.

She vowed to serve her country for the rest of her life and that's clearly what she intends to do. Good for her. She must be finding her recent problems very frustrating. At 96 of course age is catching up with her, that doesn't mean she should be thought of as redundant! I'm sure we wouldn't like it.

I hope she'll be able to attend at least one or two of the Jubilee celebrations. Perhaps she could have a 'Queen-Mobile' or a very regal mobility scooter to give her a little freedom again. I for one hope she'll be around for a few more years yet, her mother certainly had a long innings.

BTW did anyone else think that Prince Charles seemed a little short of breath while reading The Speech this morning? Perhaps he's still suffering the ongoing effects of COVID.

I suggested that maybe she should retire, not because of her age, but because of her physical problems which are making it difficult/impossible for her to carry out most of her duties.
I think she deserves a rest, although I don't suppose she would agree with me. At 84, I fervently support the rights of the elderly to do whatever they want. Including the Queen for whom I have the greatest respect.

I wonder if you would fervently support the rights of a 96 year old surgeon to operate on you, or a 96 year old pilot to pilot a plane you were travelling in, or a 96 year old taxi driver or bus driver to drive you, or a 96 year old dentist to treat you and fill your teeth. What about a 96 year old carer or nurse to look after you if you were ill? Or 96 year old fire officers or police officers? Or a 96 year old captain of a cruise ship you were on? Maybe 96 year old painters and decorators or electricians?
If it’s ageist to suggest the Queen should retire or hand over, why is it not ageist to not allow these people to continue to practice their professions?

No one’s life is at risk because the Queen is 96

I totally agree. She is doing everything that does not involve a lot of physical manoeuvring. She is still carrying on the usual requirements of a monarch - video talks and the official box she has always dealt with. For goodness sake just because she is not in tip top physically she is supposed to hand down her role which she promised to hold until the end of her days to Prince Charles. She is 96 for goodness sake. She is a marvel. She is quick witted andI think herCbristmas speech was the most heartfelt I have heard her give. I remember Prince Charles being born (on aFriday) and I watched her Coronation at the age of 11. To hear these throw away opinions about her.being forced to give up just because she isn’t mobile is unbelievable unless it is to understand it is coming from those too young to appreciate her life.

Maddyone, the age to which one is able to work surely depends upon the nature of the job. Some very physical jobs certainly may not be doable, but those involving the mind, thought processes, might well be. Many public figures work into their 90s.

I don’t think there have been any nasty comments about her , questioning her ability to do the job due to her great age is not a “nasty” comment. The fact that she is unable to fulfil recent engagements demonstrates that fact - frailty at the age of 96 is to be expected and it is no shame to admit it. I’m not a fan of the monarchy but have no personal feelings about HM, I dislike all the forelock tugging and thinking she is somehow marvellous just for being 96.

There were some headlining announcements, which are quite scary. Apart from the improvements to tenants' rights, there was nothing which will address people's concerns about the cost of living and workers' rights.

Oh dear this isnt a good thread today, leave the poor Queen alone, if everyone had waitied they would have heard the Queen wasnt going to Parliament today.
She is old enough to do as she wishes, she is doing what she said she would do all those years ago 70 to be exact, she would serve her country to the end.

How on earth do you know what she is doing? Just because she does an occasional call doesn't mean she is still able to work or in fact that she is doing any work. It's easy enough to talk briefly and sensibly for short periods. The rest of the time she could be fast asleep in a chair somewhere. My mother at 94 could still hold a perfectly sensible conversation and appear to be completely OK. However talk to her for any length of time and you realised her memory was completely shot. She managed to conceal it well and even joked about it (You can have the same thing every day for your lunch because you can't remember what you had.) HM could well be the same.

We watched part of the State opening and speech on the news.
My husband's comment "It's like a bloody pantomime."?
