At the moment, only about one third of NHS staff are doctors or nurses (roughly 450,000 out of 1.4million employees).
The new analysis shows that the number of officials working in the Department of Health and NHS England has more than doubled in two years, with even sharper rises seen at the most senior levels. Meanwhile the number of nurses rose by just seven per cent, thinktank the Policy Exchange found.
Its experts said the trends showed an “astonishing” explosion in central bureaucracy, calling for an urgent review and action to slim down and streamline its workings.
The findings come ahead of a review of leadership in the NHS by a former army general.
Sir Gordon Messenger has been sent in by Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, amid concern over the quality of management in the NHS as the service faces the biggest backlogs in its history.

The NHS is broken. Everybody knows it. GP appointments - a totally unacceptable situation, A&E waiting times - a third world service, ambulance attendance times - seriously scary. Don't even mention waiting times for routine operations for people in constant pain who can't afford to go private, even though they've paid in all their lives.
GP appointments are a problem because the GP service is underfunded and the government wants to abolish the current system and have it delivered by private corporate providers. Nobody needs to be intelligent to understand that.
I said that

I can be bothered Callistemon. I saw it and thought it worth repeating for those wo really can't be bothered with facts.
I just wondered about Boris's promise of more nurses and Googled it.
I came up with this
A progress report published today shows that overall total nurse numbers now stand at 327,907, as of December 2021, compared to 300,904 in September 2019.
www.gov.uk/government/news/government-over-halfway-to-delivering-50000-more-nurses-by-2024
But if the OP is right that means there are only about 120,000 doctors
I'm investigating that.
And get rid of all translators. That would either make the health tourists go somewhere else, learn English or make sure they are accompanied by someone who does speak English. In France & Spain they don't pander to such nonsense as having every piece of health information in 15 languages.. we are just bonkers.

The NHS isn't underfunded. The people on the front line are not well paid. The management are very well paid , some earn more than Boris as the PM. Several levels of NHS management need to be removed .
How do you work out that it isn't underfunded? Some facts might help your argument rather than repeating soundbites. How do you explain that countries such as Germany and France spend much more per head on healthcare - and they're still way behind the US?

Yes, par for the course, Kate1949
We really should not be allowed to express an opinion in the face of such superior intelligence and experience.

I love it when people tell me I don't understand research funding.
Honestly, I just love it. Makes my day. ??
So - which pharmaceutical companies get UK funding?

You said private was always bad
That’s the bit that got me Calli! I think partnering is the way to go.

Why are you all talking about just one vaccine?
It's not the only drug used by the NHS, surely?

Sometimes I just think I'll give up and go and have a cup of tea.
I just can't be bothered explaining the difference between research companies and health care that is free at the point of need.
Somebody else do it. Please. I don't have the energy.
I do know the difference.

Perhaps because you didn't understand.
A cuppa might help.
Pharmaceutical companies do make money - of course they do - but research costs a fortune. How many of these companies receive UK Government funding? Few.
Yes, they have to recoup costs which enables them to carry on researching new medicines.
A drug deemed too expensive per patient for NHS use will not be approved by NICE.
BTW it wasn't just Oxford University. A number of other universities (funded by the government) contributed to the knowledge base which resulted in the vaccine, Unfortunately, that funding is under threat now.

She can’t help herself kitty. She lies in wait for me I think!
No matter. On those who peddle propaganda rather than facts.
Hear, hear.
Perhaps if the Conservatives had fulfilled their pledge to hire 50,000 more nurses the clinical staff would make up a larger percentage.
Put the blame where it lies. Deliberate underfunding to make it unfit for purpose so they can sell it off.
Doesn't quite fit your propaganda though does it?

The EU and Charities.
Look it up.
Pah! She's not interested in facts.
Thank you. That wasn’t too hard was it?

You are very rude volver. In my opinion.

So Boris tasked Kate Bingham of rolling out our world beating Covid vaccine, discovered by scientists (? who funded them) and thankfully marketed in record tine and not for profit by the redoubtable finances and expertise of Astra Zeneca. Seems a marvellous partnership to me! Unless of course I’ve got something else wrong?
