Just overheard someone say Johnson wants to re-introduce Imperial measurements. Surely not!

Anyone heard this too?

Baggs Mon 30-May-22 12:42:34

It won't.

leeds22 Mon 30-May-22 12:34:28

Crazy. next it will £sd.

Baggs Mon 30-May-22 12:22:17

I agree with him that the best way to deal with posturing like this is to laugh at it.

Baggs Mon 30-May-22 12:21:38

Good (amusing) article in the Spectator about this subject, by Sam Leith. Here's his last paragraph:

"The return of imperial measures is a piece of posturing so absurd even the government won’t pretend to believe in it. The worst it will do is give us all a harmless laugh. And these days, God knows, you don’t get many of those to the kilo."

nanna8 Mon 30-May-22 12:13:50

Johnson has really lost it, hasn’t he. He is living back in Queen Victoria’s era and the days of the British Empire. Much like Putin living in the old Communist era.

A litre would be a good sized drop, can’t imagine many asking for that for one. We sometimes get a litre carafe of wine when we go out for a pizza with a couple of friends, they sell it that way, gives us a couple of glasses each.

BTW, I do look back fondly to the posh frocks being sold in Guineas!
Fabulous!

Not forgetting art and horses.

Will we still have the nutritional values in grams or will some packs have these in ounces and fractions of an ounce?
That would be annoying.

NotSpaghetti Mon 30-May-22 11:22:35

Given that we currently buy items with both weights (for example) on the pack, why it helps to only have pints, gills, ounces etc makes no sense to me. It has to lead to mote confusion for someone and possible errors.

Visgir1 Mon 30-May-22 11:20:44

I have never heard anyone ask for a "litre" in a pub?
It ain't broke don't fix it.. springs to mind.

^BTW - I know my weight in stone and lbs, I measure distances in miles and I buy potatoes by the pound. But I don't expect the world to go backwards to make my life easier either.^

Why is it going backwards? The change is just so that people can use whichever they prefer, surely? 'Allowing' the use of imperial measures is simply discarding an unnecessary rule, imo.

I would still question if this is the best use of the MPs', the Cabinets', and the Civil Servants' time, Baggs.

It's just Boris clinging on to power, isn't it?

volver Mon 30-May-22 11:18:16

Clearly unnecessary, definitely. So why is the government even suggesting it?

IMO, and it is my opinion, of course, they are suggesting it so that their core voters will think the Tories are all for getting away from the EU and taking us back to the glorious past when we were at the head of the empire. Its not called Imperial for nothing.

So where does it stop? The guy selling potatoe's (sic) by the pound or the international collaborations made even more complex because we measure volumes in cubic yards?

Baggs Mon 30-May-22 11:02:05

Clearly unnecessary if it's still possible to buy potatoes in pounds in spite of the rule.

Oh give over.

OF COURSE there will be accidents and mistakes? Your plane ran out of fuel? What do you expect? We're only human!!

Re-introducing Imperial measurements doesn't just let those who like to live in the past have easier lives.

The god's sake was not in defence of myself. It was a comment about your attitude.

Baggs Mon 30-May-22 10:47:02

I did read the article.

Baggs Mon 30-May-22 10:46:47

And OF COURSE there will be accidents and mistakes. Because we're human. Not all of us are misery-gutses though.

volver Mon 30-May-22 10:46:12

Oh for God's sake Baggs!

Stop thinking everyone's out to get you!

Obviously didn't read the article then.

Baggs Mon 30-May-22 10:44:47

Oh, for God's sake, volver! I was talking about my own life.

I very much doubt that pilots are allowed to use different units from standard (not even Americans!), just as they are all supposed to talk to air traffic control in English whatever their first language is.

volver Mon 30-May-22 10:42:21

The harmless daftnesses of life.

www.mentalfloss.com/article/25845/quick-6-six-unit-conversion-disasters

Like plane crashes and overdoses.

Baggs Mon 30-May-22 10:37:05

Yes, that's just how it is, cherrytree. In those calculations that work out one's BMI, I put my height in feet and inches and my weight in kg. Daft because I know both in both, iyswim, but I've known my height for longer.

Actually that's daft too cos I weigh the same as I did when I was 15.

I like the harmless daftnesses of life.

Cherrytree59 Mon 30-May-22 00:33:20

We already use a mish mash of Metric and imperial
Measurements.
Our roads are in miles not kilometres.
I don't know anyone including younger generation who doesn't weigh themselves in stones and pounds.
Just recently on gransnet there was a thread asking to describe ourselves, anyone giving their height did so in feet and inches.
When buying shoes it's a size 6 for example not size 39 .
Bra size also in inches .
Waist and trouser lengths usually in inches
I know I need a 31 inch leg in trousers wouldn't have a Scooby do in metric .

ixion Sun 29-May-22 19:21:37

I am too often tempted to convert my weigh-ins to kilos, then I would have no idea just how heavy I have become☹️
