Imperial measurements have never gone away…

Tell that to Johnson, he clearly hasn’t got the message.

Imperial is still used for some things, in other things everyone has got used to metric now.

The under 50's basically know everything metric, and very little imperial.

We can't live in the past, the world has changed, and we need to keep up.

I'd like to see improved infrastructure, and a huge amount of genuinely affordable housing built. For buying and social renting.

That, I think, is one if the most pressing issues, at the moment.

Not whether we can go back to buying spuds by the pound...?

MawtheMerrier Mon 30-May-22 08:55:36

What are you offering?

luluaugust Mon 30-May-22 09:55:41

Goodness I hope he doesn't start on the coinage that would cause a problem. I would like something done to make travel easier, as it is DH will never leave the island again.

Chestnut Mon 30-May-22 10:06:23

Travel will never be easier as we have far too many people crowded on this little island. And air travel is considered as everyday as jumping on a bus or train. I know a man who went from Luton to Barcelona for the day. Ridiculous.

As far as I know it’s just allowing retailers to use imperial measures if they wish. Much as I still loathe coping with metric measurements after all these years (yes, I know …), that would probably lead to further price increases by the back door as has already been said on another thread. Given that US uses the imperial system, I have no problem with people having a choice. We already, as has been said, operate a mixture of imperial and metric.

maddyone Mon 30-May-22 10:32:33

So long as the choice is given to use either/both measures I’m not particularly bothered. I certainly wouldn’t want to go back to completely imperial measures, I prefer the metric system. I’m not sure we could go back anyway, our monetary system can’t really be changed surely.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 30-May-22 10:36:07

Building materials have remained a hybrid of metric and imperial e.g. 2metres of 2” by 4” of timberline

GrannyGravy13 Mon 30-May-22 10:36:42

Timberline? no idea should read timber

What would you prefer to the reintroduction of imperial measurement?

Easy.

Not having the reintroduction of imperial measurement.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 30-May-22 10:38:10

I certainly wouldn’t want to change the monetary system. A step too far and I don’t think it’s being suggested anyway.

MawtheMerrier Mon 30-May-22 10:42:02

I still “think” in miles not km and my weight in kg means little - but in stones and lbs - ???????

MaizieD Mon 30-May-22 10:48:40

Honesty, integrity and a commitment to the public's wellbeing.

Callistemon21 Mon 30-May-22 10:54:52

I think we're muddling along with a mix of both systems as we are without any changes.
Leave well alone, Boris.

We're British, we're supposed to be eccentric!!

Cherrytree59 Mon 30-May-22 11:01:28

Bra size in inches, goodness knows what it would be in metric

Granny23 Mon 30-May-22 11:07:59

The repair as opposed to the new build sector of the building trades requires imperial measurements to be available. Otherwise how could they repair or replace windows, doors, the kitchen sink etc in properties built before decimalisation??

Redhead56 Mon 30-May-22 11:13:56

What next pre decimal currency again just more distraction from the governments behaviour.

Visgir1 Mon 30-May-22 11:18:09

I have never heard anyone ask for a "litre" in a pub..?
"It ain't broke don't fix it "springs to mind.

It’s nothing more sinister than a nod to our wonderful Queen to mark her jubilee.
The crown will once again be on the pint/half pint glasses.

I really try not to be sarcastic but sometimes it's difficult.

Who’s in favour of using Roman numerals?

I for one ?

Sussexborn Mon 30-May-22 11:25:26

We all seem to have been coping with mix and matching since decimalisation, Some of the local market stall holders still haven’t gone metric.

I am sure we won’t starve as various EU members on other forums keep hoping.

If completing a few forms confounds you then perhaps it’s safer to stay at home.

Am I allowed to say that metric measurements are nothing to do with decimalisation, and that neither are anything to do with the EU?

Or am I being too much of a misery guts?
