It seems that the Home Secretary is willing to send people who having spent their recent lives escaping war are now to find themselves forcibly transported to a country now at war with its neighbour.

What is the matter with Patel?

It will be too much to ask for the government to now approach Europe with a comprehensive plan that involves all the countries cooperating in dealing with the tide of human misery which will continue into the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile at the very least, devise safe routes and working with the courts set up a competent system that deals with the applicants swiftly and fairly.

They aren’t up to it.

What is clear, that everyone wants this issue dealt with properly. Any plan seems to get reasonable support until it is looked into and people begin to understand what will happen to the applicants and support then begins to fall away because people are generally (clearly not all, as we can see on here) humane and empathetic towards fellow human beings who have suffered so much. There is undoubtedly although denied, an element of racial hatred mixed in with this as well, as we don’t get the same strong reaction to applicants from Ukraine.

As with the other flagship policy towards NI, this policy breaks international law. They are long standing agreements to which the U.K. was involved in setting up and an important signatory.

That is what we once were. This government is dragging us firmly into the gutter, I hope that when it goes we can recover.

This government’s form is to change laws they don’t like / want to break , so that will be their next move no doubt.

I’m old enough to remember when ‘pushback’ (forcing the boats to return to France) was government policy, and Johnson insisted it was legal, feasible and definitely going to happen.

Today, that policy was officially (and very quietly) scrapped.

^On Newsnight just, Rwandan Government official just confirmed that the Rwandans that we will be accepting here (as part of the deal our Government has negotiated) are vulnerable persons who need care^.

Am I missing something vital here?

Nope!

You're just sane in a mad world! hmm

Shinamae Tue 14-Jun-22 23:38:19

My belief in this government is continually beggered!

Curlywhirly Tue 14-Jun-22 23:36:04

I know Callistemon - what's the point of sending our asylum seekers/refugees to Rwanda, if we are going to accept Rwandans in return? And, ones that need care and are vulnerable to boot? Just how in God's name is this seen as a solution to our immigration problems?
Beggars belief!

There was a certain irony which will not have escaped anybody whose holiday was cancelled/curtailed/ruined by cancelled flights over the recent half term holiday.
It seems the only way be sure of getting on a plane was to be deported to Rwanda - and not even that now!

The flight is off for now. The ECHR has intervened at last.
?

Good. Just hope that Johnson now doesn't think about changing our membership of the ECHR, which would be ironic, seeing as apparently we initially helped to draft the legislation.

And if he withdraws the UK from the ECHR (which he is threatening to do), as I said earlier, the Good Friday Agreement goes belly up. That'll be the USA as well as the EU definitely not on our side.

Can the greased piglet get out of this one?

But who cares? We got bl**dy Brexit, didn't we?

Urmstongran

What's the point of a Supreme Court that is evidently not supreme?

This is beyond embarrassing for the government.

They have embarrassed themselves.

Time for some resignations?

Don't hold your breath! They have no shame.

I don't want to live in a pariah state.

The ECHR was set up with huge support from Churchill to protect Europeans from the extremes of Nazism and Stalinism and I'm glad it still has some teeth after all these years. smile

NotSpaghetti Tue 14-Jun-22 22:28:38

It is embarrassing for the government Urmstongran but they were warned about it almost certainly being illegal and tried to go ahead anyway.

growstuff Tue 14-Jun-22 22:26:00

The government deserves to be embarrassed.

Oh! And just a reminder to anybody who's forgotten ...

The ECHR is nothing to do with the EU.

DaisyAnne Tue 14-Jun-22 22:21:17

Just watching the BBC and it says that Downing Street has said the flight won't leave tonight.

growstuff Tue 14-Jun-22 22:20:54

No doubt the government and its acolytes will use this as ammunition in its war against "woke lefties", but for tonight the important thing is that the plane didn't fly. smile

HousePlantQueen because those who are coming here are illegal and it's costing a fortune to keep them here

I'm sure I posted this before. People are not illegal. That is a ridiculous thing to say. Arriving in a country and applying for asylum is not illegal.

Just repeating the lies will not make them truths.
