Speaking the truth about brexit
(543 Posts)Sir Anthony Gormley whose mother was German has just applied to become a German citizen and of course an EU citizen. He tells the truth about brexit. It is time more public figures told the truth about this self afflicted disaster.
www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2022/jun/04/antony-gormley-to-become-german-citizen-due-to-tragedy-of-brexit
Anthony Gormley lives on a lovely estate in Norfolk- there’s a very good garden centre and theatre on the estate.
OK, Joelsnan, if you won't follow the link, this is what the article says
The acclaimed British sculptor Antony Gormley is to become a German citizen because of the “tragedy” of Brexit.
Speaking at a major retrospective of his work at the Museum Voorlinden near The Hague, Gormley, who is half-German, said his strong feelings about Britain’s departure from Europe had prompted him to apply for German nationality.
“I’m embarrassed about Brexit: it’s a practical disaster, a betrayal of my parents’ and grandparents’ sacrifice to make a Europe that was not going to be divided again. It’s a tragedy,” said the Turner prize-winning creator of the Angel of the North sculpture, at the launch of his show at Wassenaar, in the Netherlands.
The 71-year-old artist expected to receive his new passport in the next month, he said, by virtue of having a German mother. Gormley added that he believed many leading British politicians were not serving the country’s best interests. “Britain has fallen into the hands of self-seeking people who are not interested in public service but their personal careers, and that’s a shame,” he said.
The sculptor’s decision is the latest in a run of high-profile defections to European citizenship in protest against Brexit
Nothing at all in there about 'leaving the UK', or renouncing British citizenship.

I see you are still pushing the old Brexit agenda.
However, this is about the OP and the fact that it is wrong and indeed the BBC have published an apology to Mr Gormley for broadcasting/publishing the lie.
There is nothing 'wrong' about the OP. Except that you don't seem to be reading what it says, but what you would like it to have said.
The BBC 'apology' has nothing at all to do with what the Guardian article linked to says. Have you even read it?
Perhaps it is no surprise that in publishing its legal advice on the lawfulness of breaching the NI Protocol… the government does not cite a single eminent lawyer in defence of its position. Johnson will not easily slough off the charge - made even by some of his MPs - that he is wilfully breaching international law, to the detriment of the UK’s standing.
Peston
There is going to be trouble isn’t there??

@BethRigby
NEW: Majority of MLAs in the NI Assembly have signed a joint letter to Boris Johnson this afternoon outlining their opposition to the government’s proposed legislation that would give Ministers the power to unilaterally disapply sections of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
Johnson first ?? PM to break law while in office, now breaks international law & destroys British credibility...
Thatcher: “Britain does not break treaties. It would be bad for Britain, bad for relations with the rest of the world, and bad for any future treaty on trade.

Maybe you should clarify your statement re
But the most corrupt lying government in living memory has changed all that
With the pretext of ‘In my opinion’. Because the actual verifiable evidence is to the contrary. Check out all the legal challenges made against the government, you will find majority were not proven.
The biased media can do amazing things when it comes to brainwashing the populous.
I don’t remember any previous government being involved in so many legal challenges. Does that clarify my comment. Please tell me of any other governments that have been involved in so many legal challenges with both domestic and international law. I’m quite happy to be educated in such matter. Especially as you seem to think I’ve been brainwashed[

Yes you’re right. It’s not ‘either /or’ - especially if you’re retired as there’s plenty of time to fill I imagine.
Can I just say, I do like your posting style, even if I don’t share your views. You’re very polite.
The vacuum thing is, like the banana thing, a nonsense. It is not a benefit of Brexit.
Wattage is a measure of power used and not of suction or effectiveness.
Modern vacuum cleaners are, like modern cars, more efficient and effective and so less power is necessary.
What we are being told is that HOORAY, due to Brexit us Brits are now free to spend more money on powering our vacuums to no effect whatsoever.
I seem to remember reading that governing down all Europe's vacuums to 1400w would save enough electricity to power Belgium but I might have imagined that.
The biased media can do amazing things when it comes to brainwashing the populous.
I'm always surprised when leave voters seem to think that the media is against them.
The Sun, the Telegraph, the Daily Express and the Daily Mail, perhaps the newspapers with the highest combined circulation in the UK, all fervently pro-Brexit. Plus the Times slightly more balanced but mainly pro.
The Guardian, the Mirror and the Independent (is that still in existence in print form?) are anti with a far, far smaller combined circulation.
What more do you want?
The BBC has been virtually silent on the topic for the last 6 years when it comes to critical comment. As have the other TV channels with the exception of Ch 4 which is being punished for being outspoken.
I'm interested to know about all these failed legal challenges that the media isn't telling us about. The challenges to the government's corrupt covid procurement procedures and to their attempts to curtail Freedom of Information have been successful.
Do tell us more...
^I admire people who ignore all the arguing on social media & spend their time doing other things - they’re still interested in politics but have better, more productive things to do.
I’m actually envious.^
... some of us manage to be both productive - doing things we enjoy - and debate on social media. It depends on how you manage your time.
It's not either,or - one or the other.
I sometimes fire off a comment whilst I'm hanging on the 'phone waiting for one of those who know "my call is important to them" to prove it by answering. Or having come in from the garden, getting a bite to eat.
You appear to be making the assumption that posters are constantly poring over GN comments - it probably isn't like that at all - we dip in and out.

Unless of course the only reason for joining in with these threads is to keep driving home the same, ageing, entrenched views.
Remainers are surely the guilty ones there!

Most people's views are entrenched - and that certainly applies to Brexiters as much as Remainers.
Witness the Eurosceptics who, after 75, were so 'entrenched' in their views they successfully campaigned to leave the EU.
They didn't shut-up when the vote went against them - but for some reason, you seem to think Remainers should?
I became interested in politics when I had my children. Thatcher, Falklands War,cruise missiles, protect and survive….I resolved to do everything I could to make the world a better place. I really didn’t want, in the latter part of my life, to be watching parliament every day, writing letters to my MP, marching etc etc. I would prefer to be gardening, reading books and walking my dog more. But the most corrupt lying government in living memory has changed all that.

But, I do wonder, once again, if any body bothered to read the booklet sent to all households in 2016. It stated arguments for being in the EU - stronger economy, cost of living and advantages and benefits we had. Also, what could happen if we left - potential economic disruption, reduced investment and difficulty in striking deals.
Petera
MaizieD That's one very scary list of 'benefits'
How can you be so negative? We'll be able to whiz around on our gerrymandered (option 9) high-powered electric bicycles (option 5) cobbled together from an old vacuum cleaner motor (options 2 and 9).
And when the whole thing explodes underneath us we have the comfort of knowing that there will be a group of undertrained paramedics (option 6) to get us to hospital where the injuries will be treated using experimental drugs (option 3).
This is exactly what we voted for when we voted for Brexit.
???
Excellent. I'm converted. Yay! Brexit is Brilliant ?
We aren’t going to get more powerful vacuum cleaners as Henry’s about the only ones made in the U.K. - they are powerful enough plus he wouldn’t be able to be exported if he was, and if this is one of the top benefits then all the upheaval, cost and division will be worth it eh?

How many of those are actual changes rather than dreams, many would need changes in legislation
OK I accept that leavers cannot list the current benefits.
It’s not about being politically aware, its listening to the arguments and deciding which was true, logical, reasonable and likely to be achieved.
I my assessment, the Brexit arguments were none of the above, moreover the aggressive tone the were conducted in angered the EU. It’s quite simple if you want to leave any partnership you have to negotiate in good faith, or as the weaker partner you will get a very bad deal.
We were and we did.

Maybe leavers would like to list the current benefits or accept they were wrong!.
PleaseWhy ask we amateurs here rather than just repost the top 9 opportunities being considered by the professional Brexit opportunities minister. My life's certainly going to be easier...
1. Encourage fracking, shortcut rules on planning consultation via emergency act.
2. Abolish the EU regulations that restrict vacuum cleaner power to 1400 watts.
3. Remove precautionary principle restrictions (for instance) on early use of experimental treatments for seriously ill patients and GM crops.
4. Abolish rules around the size of vans that need an operator's licence.
5. Abolish EU limits on electrical power levels of electrically assisted pedal cycles.
6. Allow certain medical professionals, such as pharmacists and paramedics, to qualify in three years.
7. Remove requirements for agency workers to have all the attributes of a permanent employee.
8. Simplify the calculation of holiday pay (eg 12.07 percent of pay) to make it easier for businesses to operate.
9. Reduce requirements for businesses to conduct fixed wire testing and portable application testing.
That's one very scary list of 'benefits', Petera.
Nothing like cutting regulations to make everyone less safe or encouraging the use of fossil fuels when they really should be eliminated.
Joelsnan
I think you need to read my post again.
The Guardian article which was linked in the OP says nothing about Gormley 'leaving' the UK , or giving up his UK passport. The BBC 'apology' is irrelevant.
