Boris Johnson wins confidence vote by 211 votes to 148
Sir Graham Brady, chair of the Conservative 1922 Committee, says 359 votes were cast. There were no spoilt ballots.

Confidence in Boris Johnson: 211

No confidence in Johnson: 148

That means more than 40% of Tory MPs voted against Johnson.

I do wish they had held off until the by elections on 23 June. The results will surely prove to be humiliating to the Conservatives and might have helped at focus a few more minds into the way their best interests lie - seeing as that, rather than what is right- appears to be the focus of the majority of their MPs at the moment.

It couldn’t have been a better result for the opposition.

A totally wounded prime minister who leads a party that will undoubtedly now be at war and it will only be a few months after the by elections and standards committee that there will be another vote.

No, it couldn't, especially with the byelections still to come. Although I have to admit I thought it would be better if the vote came after them. But then, no one expected such a high vote against him.

The Sun has the best headline tomorrow, made me laugh.

Night of the blond knives.

Sorry , missed most of the coverage as I had to go get a bucket after Nadine Dorries’ nauseous sucking up. ?

Seems the confidence vote was called too quickly in my opinion. Febrile MPs in a flurry, supporting Hunt. They will be kicking this elves tomorrow morning as Boris is safe for another year.

The nation has more important things than allowing the MSM and the Remain elite to manipulate them, destroy the government and return us to the EU, which is what this is all about.

Naive MPs are being manipulated by the same forces that have been against us since 2016.

Urmstongran Mon 06-Jun-22 23:20:23

Boris has made a similar to mistake to Henry VIII.
Henry regretted killing Cromwell.

Boris should have kept his Cromwell, Cummings.

MawtheMerrier Mon 06-Jun-22 23:22:39

Boris likes his booze doesn’t he?
Here’s some more.

Urmstongran Mon 06-Jun-22 23:30:25

And Hunt?
Best way to guarantee a Tory defeat in 2024.

Did you get that in a text from Doug? grin

I agree with HousePlantQueen and Riverwalk.

Politically, this is a great result for Labour but I dread to think what more damage this mob can do to the country. I hope the rebel Conservatives have really grown enough backbone to vote down some of the more extreme measures in Parliament.

Hetty58 Mon 06-Jun-22 23:50:10

The way I see it, nobody 'wins' a confidence vote - although they may survive it. The fact that there's been one in the first place is deeply damaging. It highlights the serious division in the party, hopefully the beginning of the end.

MayBee70 Tue 07-Jun-22 00:14:37

It isn’t purely remain MP’s voting against him.

The best-selling national newspapers are The Sun and the Daily Mail. Neither want us to return to the EU.

And no-one in their right mind thinks we will do that anytime soon. If ever. Such a move is decades away and it will be decided long after we're dead and gone. And it would take years of negotiations.

For some of us Remainers - this is about much more than Brexit, which was a means to an end for Johnson. It's about the damage he's doing to our democracy and our international reputation. For now, and the foreseeable future, Brexit is the reality.

I'm not happy about it, personally, but it is what it is. I am far more concerned that Johnson and his government are in the process of becoming a dictatorship. Brexit can wait.

I'm not sure he's safe - neither Margaret Thatcher or Theresa May were. But why should anyone take it out on the elves grin!

MayBee70 Tue 07-Jun-22 00:41:11

I think they knew exactly what they were doing. They knew there was no chance of him losing the vote. But he has been badly wounded and the bye elections will wound him even more. Plus there is talk of cabinet resignations. I’m sure that one of his own MP’s today referred to his leadership of being dictator like but I’ve watched so much today I lose track of who it was.

It has been a trial by the obsessive media which is totally wrong.

Do some of you go out at night and dance on people’s graves?

Fortunately my MP was serving soldier and knows the value of loyalty.

DiamondLily Tue 07-Jun-22 04:42:59

He got the same support that Thatcher did - she was gone, within a week, after her cabinet turned on her.

He got less support than May, and she was gone within 6 months, as she could get nothing through Parliament.

He's dead in the water really, and it's just a question of how long he can cling on.

This will do Labour a lot of good - a lame duck PM, leading a party, having some sort of civil war, is always good for the opposition.?

Why do you think this is some sort of Remainer plot?

Roger Gale, Andrew Bridgen, Andrea Leadsom, Steve Baker and Mark Francois were, and are, all committed Brexiteers - some were members of the ERG group.

They have all called for Johnson to go.

I do agree, though, that they should have waited until after the by-elections, as the Tories are liable to lose both of them.

vegansrock Tue 07-Jun-22 05:42:36

Boris surrounded himself with supporting MPs in 2019, the fact that 148 of them have turned against him 2 1/2 years later is telling , this is despite him phoning them all and promising them ministerial jobs ( several have been promised the same job apparently). This is a better result than I thought as Johnson is wounded and we aren’t going to “move on”. Someone needs to ask every single one of his lapdogs why he removed “ honesty and integrity” from the ministerial code.

No, it's been the PM's behaviour which has been totally wrong.

Toby Ellwood and Tom Tugendhat were serving soldiers and recognise decent values and honour. Both called for Johnson to resign.

Quite cutting really.
I bet you were one of the mean girls at school too.

Anyone who believes Johnson is being attacked by metropolitan elites when he himself and his sycophants are prime examples of entitled metropolitan elites needs to to stop regurgitating out of date and inaccurate soundbites. Of course Johnson will struggle on and refuse to admit there is any thing seriously wrong with his behaviour, until the next crisis.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 07-Jun-22 06:16:43

Johnson’s reaction reminded me of Trump.

Total denial .

If you discount those on the payroll and thus beholden to Johnson’s on.

7 out if 10 Tory MPs voted against him.

They will vote against his extreme policies in the months to come.
They will react even further when the by election results show how deeply unpopular the Tory party has become.
The final straw will be the select committees conclusion on Johnson’s appalling behaviour showing him utterly unfit for the post.

Johnson will be gone by the autumn.
