Not even their children?
Then the cycle wont be broken
Good Morning Friday 8th May 2026
I’m a Pear/Apple - Part 5. Still going!!
What do you think animals think about sharing the planet with humans
So, Shamima is fearful that she faces the death sentence when she is put on trial for terrorist offences..........her crimes included constructing suicide vests. I ask myself, was she just as fearful for the innocent people slaughter when those vests were detonated?
Not even their children?
Then the cycle wont be broken
She's not british, she might have lived here but turned her back on everything it has to offer
I think she should have her citizenship restored, be returned to the UK to face such charges as can be brought here, and de-programmed, if possible.
Some of those who were 'de-programmed' went on to commit terrorist attacks in London. We have no idea what is going on in someone's head, even if they pretend to have changed their views. Once dangerous always dangerous. Do not give them the chance to mix with the public. She should stay over there or be locked up here until she's old.
Suddenly online are the seductive delights of a society where everybody is the same as you, where anyone from what was previously the community that bullied and terrorised are themselves bullied and terrorised. How wonderful it seems
An interesting and thoughtful post, M0nica
However, if you are saying that Shamima Begum had been bullied and terrorised before making this decision to go, do we have proof of that?
If that is true, then the people doing that previously were not the Syrians whom she and her comrades bullied, terrorised and killed. They were most certainly not the Yazidi people who were their victims too.
She was certainly brainwashed as a child and I do not agree with the death penalty. However, I don't think that her previous life led her to do what she did.
Here was a girl who was doing well at school but thought it would be an exciting adventure, trying to persuade others to the cause according to her classmates.
The school and authorities should have been more alert to what was happening to their pupils.

Yes, they have which means a total failure of the reprogramming services offered.

Sometimes people who have no awareness of mental trauma make me nervous because they have no understanding of causing it themselves and take no responsibility even when it is pointed out to them.
That is a true lack of empathy
Are you talking about Shamima Begum, the various ways she has caused mental trauma to others and her lack of empathy over subsequent atrocities?
Desentisitation of normal feelings of horror, eg at seeing severed heads in buckets, seeing little girls used as sex slaves, could cause that.
Whether anyone could be brought back from that is debatable.

Is it even possible to de-programme someone? Who knows. The human brain is the most complex thing in the universe and it is never possible to know what someone is going to do.
Yet interestingly, no one, and especially those in power, takes any responsibiity for the way these things are discussed and the rise in hate crimes against minorities that generally follows public discussion like this.
This is a responsibility carried by everyone from themews outlets to tweets to social media discussion to Bob in the pub having a rant about a few belonging to a minority group.
This happens to all minority groups in current public discussion, whether that is race, religion, sexuality or gender.
Innocent people suffer.
Is that not a form of terrorism?
VioletSky, not a form of terrorism, just people being people. You cannot control the internet so what will be will be. Everyone should be aware of the poison it spreads but again we cannot control what people see or what views they form.
Of course we can, or i should give up on children who use "gay" as an insult or who say "my dad told me to punch him" or "brexit means we can deport you" or "girls can't do that" at school?
Saying she wasnt a child is pretty much the same to me as saying a chair is actually a pizza. Its utterly meaningless.
Your final sentence sums up your entire post Galaxy

But not when it’s directed to me??
Funny that

Yes, she's British. There are plenty of people who, like her, were born in the UK and don't like much about the country.

You can discuss why you think a concept is meaningless or ridiculous and that is valid or just chuck an insult
Usually I just ignore a thrown insult with no substance but this time I didn't
No idea why
growstuff i had to laugh at how true that is
It wasnt directed at you tickingbird it was directed at anyone who thinks they can decide that who is a child is different to the law. It doesnt work like that.
And if you think 15 is not a child you have to be ok with that in all circumstances.
Beckett Are you saying that SB, still living in a society ruled by ISIL and its followers, whatever, they may be calling themselves now should suddenly renounce it all and admit it was wrong.
Have you considered what would happen to her if she did? What would her life expectany be, a day? a week? or would she just disappear. I do not know whether she regrest her actions and has changed her views, but if I was where she was, if I wanted to survive, I would be agreeing with all the extremists surrounding me right now.
Actually it is so nice to know that so many on this thread are such heroines. If they were in SB's place, despite being surrounded by ISIL extremists, with a history of violence of the nastiest kind they would be prepared to admit they had got it wrong and that ISIL was wrong and they would go willingly to the nasty and probably very slow painful death they would inevitably face.
Me? I am a coward, In her current situation I would agree to anything just to save my life.
But my respect for the willing martyrs among us is immense. But all of us can be brave when we know we will never have to face what others are facing on a daily basis.
Has anyone mentioned how she said she felt "unloved at home"
I think she should come back to the U.K.
The age of criminal responsibility in U.K. is 10yrs old.

I agree, GrannyGravy
And she wouldn't get the death penalty here.
That's sad.
She was looking for someone who loved her.
I have no idea what she was looking for Callistemon21 but as a mother I know 15 yr olds are impressionable.
I worked on the city at the height of the IRA bombing campaign, too close for comfort on several occasions, as unpalatable as it may feel we have to move on.
I haven't seen much empathy for the victims of these terrorists.
This reminds me of all the support groups for perpetrators of crime and hardly any for victims.
You don't win an argument with sarcasm either or by claiming you know someone else's mind.
