The news has just announced there were another 300 refugees crossed the channel today. They have risked being deported to Rwanda rather than stay in France. I wonder how France feels about this?

I see that Patel is intent on electronically tagging innocent people.

I suppose it is less obvious than yellow stars, but the intention is the same.

My passport says that I’m British, and that is how I describe myself. Next I see myself as Cornish, and then English.

As more of the world becomes uninhabitable because of climate change more and more people will need to move to the UK. It is the tip of the iceberg that we have seen up to now. We need to learn to share our resources and be mindful of our own impact on the planet and on resources.

Exactly.

CatsCatsCats Wed 15-Jun-22 19:36:18

Curlywurly No, I'm not furious, I just thought it would help a bit in restricting the number of people who came here.

And on the issue of taxation and funding, why, if they are two totally different issues, do people say 'such as waste of taxpayers' money' when talking about this aborted flight to Rwanda?

I'm British first, European second and Essex Girl third.

I am an honorary Essex Girl, having had a base/secondary family home here since the age of 14yr & 10months.

I don't think you're devious Chestnut I think mostly people don't even know they're doing it. It's subconscious.

Where do I fit in the scheme you describe? With the English or the non-English? Remembering that you were making the point that the non-English were being allowed to share in your gifts.

I'm not suggesting you think I'm devious! I'm saying I'm not devious enough to think the way you seem to be thinking, finding hidden meanings in everything and then suggesting I have an unconscious bias in my beliefs. Oh poor me, I don't even realise what I'm saying.
It wasn't me who suggested we 'share our gifts' with the world. I was responding to another poster who said we should. I was proving that we do share our gifts with the rest of the world because people from various other countries are being housed, none of those countries being in the British Isles except one who was English.

Ah, OK, so you're calling me devious.

All clear now.

MaizieD I wonder why whenever a chancellor/shadow chancellor or most government/shadow government ministers are interviewed why the taxes increase to pay back X, Y & Z is never challenged by the interviewer?

It’s almost as if the media are complicit…

Most interviewers aren't economically literate.

Catscatscats Not only have we got just as many people crossing into the UK but, thanks to Brexit, we are in a worse position to help them or our own people.

We have more people crossing the Channel and applying for asylum (and goodness knows how many under the radar) and more people coming from non-EU countries, especially India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. I don't have anything against any of them, but is this really what people wanted? Meanwhile, we have a shortage of fruit pickers, lorry drivers and hospitality staff.

No offence taken.

I was so tempted to put that order, but I didn’t want to cause offence X

A person in England, who considers themselvers English (I assume) says that we are "sharing our gifts", and that a flat is being occupied by a succession of people, but only one of them is English. The implication is that anybody who is not English is somehow the beneficiary of our gift giving. The implication is that all those non-English people are getting something that they should be grateful for.

We are often told on here that the UK is a country, we're all one big happy family. But by using the word English in this context instead of British you are marginalising all those of us in this country who are not English.

growstuff gets it.

What absolute nonsense. The family were English, born in England, so what is wrong with calling them English? It is not a dirty word you know. You just create hidden meanings in everything and then twist it to suit your agenda.
I give up. I'm just not that devious. ?‍♀️

Curlywhirly Wed 15-Jun-22 18:12:11

CatsCatsCats 'The main reason I voted to leave the EU was because our country can't keep overpopulating the way it had been doing'.

You must be furious then, as leaving the EU hasn't stopped immigration (and was never going to).

mumofmadboys Wed 15-Jun-22 17:47:10

The NHS would have collapsed long ago without doctors and nurses from abroad

vegansrock Wed 15-Jun-22 17:45:00

France has a equal and in someways better health service than the U.K. If a refugee was in labour they would be well cared for. It’s ridiculous to suggest women only want to get here to use the health service. Actually many of those working in the NHS are immigrants.

Iam64 Wed 15-Jun-22 17:18:31

What’s this obsession with expecting people to stay in France. Our border is more difficult to cross because we are an island. That doesn’t mean refugees/asylum seekers with historical or family connections to the UK should stay in France, a country that takes more refugees than Britain does.

It’s illinformed nonsense to suggest pregnant women take a risky, hugely expensive trip in a rubber dinghy so their baby will be delivered by the NHS
Wilful misunderstanding of the reality of the lives endured that leads desperate people to make that high risk journey.

RichmondPark Wed 15-Jun-22 16:57:41

The government’s estimate of how much "deliberate health tourism" and those taking advantage of free NHS services cost the NHS every year was around 0.3% of NHS spending allocated to specific services in 2012/13. It’s still roughly around 0.3% of total health spending.
From Full Fact

Almost 15% of NHS staff in England report a nationality other than British.
