I recently started watching GB News and am finding it so interesting. Once you get past the different format to the usual news programmes it is very good. There are so many different views expressed from all political spectrums. I like that contributors are allowed to say their piece and it's then debated. Not just left or right wing views.

It's about free speech Dinhamo If your bank stopped you from having a bank account I'm sure you'd think differently.

At this moment, it obviously doesnt seem important to you, but if you were in the position that over 10,000 people find themselves you would be glad this is being addressed.

Freedom of speech and action is bigger than ULEZ ect., in fact did anyone actually vote for ULEZ, (I know very little so you could enlighten me)?

To many things that affect us have come about not through voting, but by our institutions deciding what they think we should have.

There has been very little dissent from the other mainstream broadcasters.

Therefore I for one am very glad this is happening.

I only wish I was knowledgeable enough to convince you!smile

Of course, they’re going to close ranks…

Hey I've just had a thought, would any of the fuss around de banking have been possible without GB News?

It gave NF the platform he needed.

No one else made a fuss certainly not the BBC, who would have shut the story down asap, imv.

More reasons for me to watch grin

It’s on now as “NatWest CEO admits She leaked Nigel’s bank information to the BBC!”
Well done Nigel (let’s just wait for the haters 😁)

I'm not a Farage Fan but this whole business is wrong on many levels
And yes, it may be just the tip of a huge iceberg.

Alison Rose seemed to be almost laughing in front of the cameras.

maddyone Tue 25-Jul-23 19:59:50

I think it might be of importance to Nigel Farage, but even more so to the other people who have had their bank accounts closed.

Shinamae Tue 25-Jul-23 19:54:36

And here they come 😂😂

It's not exactly earth shattering news, or of any importance. Where do you think it would come in a list of other news items, such as fires in Europe, ULEZ, byelections, the state of the economy etc etc?

I'm not quite sure what you mean Fleurpepper

Are you conflating a private wedding cake supplier with a gov. owned (30%) bank?

Plus this isn't about one person (I presume you mean NF). This is a high profile person using his platform to shine a light on all the other (possibly in excess of 10,000 people) cases, who have had to cope with the banks decision, without any redress.

Coutts bank boss says SORRY to Nigel Farage for 'deeply inappropriate' report about him and insists she 'values freedom of expression' - as government announces crackdown on customers' accounts being closed

Fleurpepper Thu 20-Jul-23 21:22:27

Remember the couple who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. Seems that the same people who complain about a private business choosing to refuse to deal with one private customer, for their own reasons- were the ones who said the opposite at the time, strangely.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 20-Jul-23 17:41:36

Martin Lewis reckons there are approximately 3 million people without bank accounts in the U.K.

Someone on the radio today was talking about the need for a State Bank for those people unable to get access to a general bank,

Namsnanny Thu 20-Jul-23 17:38:29

Will Chris Bryant be forthcoming with an apology about his comments about NF's so called Russian connection? grin

Namsnanny Thu 20-Jul-23 17:30:59

Alison Rose CEO of Coutts has apologized to NF.
Apparently there are over 2 million people who dont have b accounts in this country.
AR said the central pillar of her tenure was to support the climate.
Maybe she should concentrate on telling the truth and financial services?

Namsnanny Wed 19-Jul-23 23:15:09

I agree Callistemon But none of this has prevented them from giving out 25 million (I think) in bonuses.

PEP is only a part of the problem.
Have you read the minutes from Coutts on NF personal data request?

His cancellation from the bank was based on his views not aligning with their values.

Banks are there to facilitate our monetary transactions.
They are not arbiters of our moral or political views.

Banks should look to themselves and their directors first before trying to tell others what they should be doing or what they should be thinking. They themselves are far from perfect.

Casdon Wed 19-Jul-23 22:43:31

Apparently ministers are drawing up plans to ensure bank customers are given three months notice of an account being closed and a clearer explanation, and looking to change licences so they can’t discriminate based on political views. I presume it will go before parliament in the autumn as they break up for the summer tomorrow. I don’t know why Sunak seemed lukewarm about it, but he was.

Namsnanny Wed 19-Jul-23 22:19:55

You may be right Casdon, but I don't know why not.

It's been at least 10 years in the making, with small businesses and 'ordinary' customers suffering from this heavy handed treatment from the banks.

Don't you see it as social engineering?

Casdon Wed 19-Jul-23 21:46:57

The PM shut the discussion down though, I don’t think there’s an appetite on his part to take it any further.

Casdon Wed 19-Jul-23 21:00:25

At PMQ today the PM said the government's Financial Services and Markets Act puts in place "new measures to ensure that politically exposed persons are being treated in an appropriate and proportionate manner". Is that what you mean Namsnanny when you say that there has been a lot of cross party support for Farage, an inquiry was requested by Jacob Rees-Mogg but rejected by Sunak as above.

Any one feel differently about Coutts de banking NF now we have some very clear evidence why?

Yes - Coutts shows good judgement.

I paraphrase

“Seen as xenophobic and racist. Seen as a grifter.

Being associated with Farage risks the banks reputation”

Well, I didn't expect you to change your views Wwmk2 but it does seem as if the gov. feel differently.

There has been a lot of cross party support for NF position.

This is about freedom of the individual to believe anything they choose, with in the law.

Who are the banks to decided who they do and don't agree with?

They have been bailed out with tax payers money.

Coutts lied and gave NF info to a third party, the BBC.

I noted you left out that after considerable investigation, Coutts stated there was no evidence of financial or any other dealings from NF with Russia.

A lot of this is down to ESG and AI

I asked the original question above to see if anyone else is open to change their opinion in the light of truth?

eazybee Wed 19-Jul-23 10:08:01

With regard to Nigel Farage, he was deemed a perfectly respctable customer of Coutts for a number of years and they were perfectly happy to use his money and accept his bank charges.
The people who have 'exited' him remain anonymous, and the Chief Executive refused to give him any reason for his expulsion when questioned. This committee needs to be made accountable for their decision.
It is reasonable for any institution to refuse to accept a new customer after investigation if they choose, but having accepted them and their money for a number of years it is totally unacceptable to remove them without even the courtesy of an explanation, and 'leak ' untrue information to cover themselves.
I shall be very interested to find out who is behind this, and I am sure NF will pursue it . I have my suspicions, but absolutely no evidence, so I shan't be saying.

I looked him up after MaizieD’s post. He’s a journalist, he presents a nightly show. It’s all over Twitter.

I had a look, realise I may have seen him, but he's hardly as well-known as Huw Edwards who was a national institution.

That's why I posted it on this thread where the GBN lovers who'd laid into Huw Edwards would know who he was.

I thought that GBN was very well known and popular. So it's devotees were telling us... 🤔

All I remembered about him was his accent.

From the BBC News website
Broadcaster Dan Wootton has admitted making "errors of judgement in the past" but denied any criminality as he responded to claims made against him.

Reports have included claims he offered media colleagues thousands of pounds for explicit material of themselves.

Wootton said on his GB News show he was the victim of a "witch hunt" by "nefarious players".

The publishers of the Sun and MailOnline say they are looking into allegations against him.

Various claims made on social media and in publications including the Byline Times, which first reported the story, and the Guardian, formed part of a campaign to get Wootton "cancelled", he told viewers of GB News' Dan Wootton Tonight.
