I recently started watching GB News and am finding it so interesting. Once you get past the different format to the usual news programmes it is very good. There are so many different views expressed from all political spectrums. I like that contributors are allowed to say their piece and it's then debated. Not just left or right wing views.

I knew about the Chelmsford accommodation. It's a converted office block and doesn't comprise "luxury" appartments.

Look at the photos on the link!!

I've seen other articles in local papers. I know the building. Read the comment about inadequate natural light and the size of the apartments. Not exactly luxury!

You need to go to Specsavers then because those apartments have huge windows and are flooded with natural light.

As DelBoy would say “what can’t speak, can’t lie.” 😉

GBnews is being very selective in what it is showing. The apartments below the upper level aren't going to be 'flooded with light'

Chelmsford City Council obviously needs to go to Specsavers too.

The irony is that Chelmsford City Council doesn't appear to want asylum seekers any more than GB news does... It's just using less rabble rousing methods...

Oreo Sun 06-Aug-23 11:16:54

Tbf no town wants loads of asylum seekers/ economic migrants/ illegal immigrants in their midst. Why would they?
Look at all the hoo ha in Dorset about the converted barge being moored near them.

In the meantime the man who was wrongly convicted and is now out of prison after 17 long years is homeless and sofa surfing.

Whatever you say, there are thousands of people in the Chelmsford area who would prefer ANYTHING with a roof and walls to where they are currently living.

Whichever way I look at this I still believe that we should be looking after our own people first. Disused military bases and holiday camps and caravan parks are where I would be putting migrants.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 06-Aug-23 11:33:32

Chelmsford is the city that I do most of my non-essential shopping in. It is evident on walking round the pedestrianised centre that there are many people living rough at the moment.

The city is struggling with the loss of some big names, Debenhams and Mothercare to name two. It has made the effort of rejuvenation with Bond Street, an Everyman cinema and multiple restaurants.

I for one will not feel comfortable shopping there if there are groups of young migrant men wandering around, sorry but I find them intimidating.

growstuff Sun 06-Aug-23 12:04:23

GrannyGravy They're already there, just round the corner in a hotel from the converted office block.

1,700 asylum seekers are being accommodated in Wethersfield, Essex.

Yes, I know.

Which is why I said I find myself feeling uncomfortable when they are wandering around and congregating in large groups. I haven’t been to Chelmsford on my own for some time, and neither have my DD, DiL’s or several female friends.

Having driven along our local seafront recently, I have also come to the conclusion I will not be taking the GC to the amusements over the school holidays for the same reason.

growstuff Sun 06-Aug-23 12:45:12

So it doesn't make much difference to you whether they're in a hotel or in a converted office block.

The block was bought by a developer for over £9 million. He specialises in providing accommodation for the "less fortunate". He probably saw a gap in the market. I guess Chelmsford City Council could have rented it for its homeless, but the government got its bid in before they did or maybe the council doesn't have the money. The block was never intended to provide luxury appartments, as GB News claims.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 06-Aug-23 13:19:09

Every time I watch GB News for a few minutes, they get stuff wrong.

They are like excitable teenagers full of hyperbole and prone to over reaction. 😄😄

varian Sun 06-Aug-23 18:08:31

They certainly need a good fact checker.

This might be a good idea for them.

First illegal immigrants are moving on to the Bibby Stockholm barge this morning.

How can it be right that they will get medical and dental treatment straight away when the rest of us who have worked and paid taxes all our lives can’t?

Live footage just coming up on GB News.

maddyone Mon 07-Aug-23 11:36:16

I’d just put them all on a ferry/aeroplane and send them back to anywhere.
I know, I know, I know. We can’t!
I’d just like to and I suspect many others would too.

Sad.:the comments on here. The government are trying hard aren't they to cause friction .?
It's a shame these people cannot be cleared more quickly, or at least have work permits so that they can work and pay taxes./

I disagree. They are trying to provide acceptable accommodation for people who should not even be here and whatever they do either dogooders or refugee charities or troublemakers try to thwart what they are doing.

Ahhhh.

Ofcom have announced that they are investigating 4 GB news programmes for possible breaking of rules about political presenters and impartiality rules.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 07-Aug-23 16:27:57

It was only a matter of time.

It is pretty grim.

westendgirl Mon 07-Aug-23 17:01:54

Primrose, what about the people who should be here. I was thinking about those in Afghanistan, including the lady judges who worked for the British Army and who were not able to get out in the fiasco that was the airlifts.
I still feel that this has been set up politically by the government .

Dinahmo Mon 07-Aug-23 17:25:47

I've watched Anne Diamond and Martin Daubeny during the last two days. Their programme and the others that I've seen are definitely not news programmes. They might skirt around news items but they're not reporting the news at all.

There was a lot of talk one day about sun beds at hotels - talk about boring - and Daubeny even managed to bring Brexit into that.

Also, the design of the studio and the background was not very good.

I also watched Laurence Fox - he may have been on Talk Talk and his monologue, once it could be heard, was appalling.
