Who’s next?

Chewbacca Wed 06-Jul-22 17:28:56

He’s got to go. He can’t call an election - surely?! He’d have to be an independent with the few tories who support him. A new Tory party running a separate campaign ??

Don't be so sure Iam64, his hubris is boundless.

Zahawe always seems to me to be a sleazey creep so he’ll fit in well

I've just heard on the radio that Zahawe the new Chancellor is amongst those who are calling on Boris to go. Talk about being two-faced and gratitude!

What worries me is how vulnerable all this parliamentary unrest and resignations is making our country. Disgusting that they resigned when we have had several threats from Russia over Ukraine. All the political parties should unite and work together in the face of this as well as rising prices, monkey pox and covid on the rise again.
A country experiencing political unrest is an ideal target imo
Whatever you think of Boris this is not the time to desert the government

Has Rishi resigned in the hope he will be elected PM when/if Boris does go. He has to, surely.

No honour amongst thieves - as the saying goes.

Exactly right. With all that's going on this is exactly the time we need a lying narcissist in charge.

There are times, Petera, when I wish we had a 'like' button grin

All that the government have been focussed on for months is ‘operation save big dog’. Not Ukraine. Not inflation. Not covid. And Keir Starmer has continually supported the government on all of the policies that were in the best interest of the country and it’s people. We’ve needed some sort of coalition government for a long time. What we now need is a new government.

M0nica Wed 06-Jul-22 18:28:07

sazzi, There is no question of deserting the government, it is a question f ditching the current leader.

The leader is not the party, which is something BJ has not fully grasped. Boris did not win the last election, the Conservatives did, and they can win again, but not with the current leader.

If Boris had any honour, and not just naked self interest. he would see that he was the proverbial millstone round the Conservatives neck and step aside voluntarily. But of course, for Boris, only Boris matters.

I am not a Conservative voter, never have been, but I think that once Boris goes and they have a leader of principle - and their are principles Conservatives.

It is like when jeremy Corbyn led the Labour party, many opposed him, and realised their time would come, in the meanwhile they deliberately faded into the background, to reappear when Corbyn went.

sazz1 Wed 06-Jul-22 18:29:16

I just hope if he does go we don't end up with pretty ugly. Never liked her and her record of employment is pretty ugly too

M0nica Wed 06-Jul-22 18:29:32

Left a sentence out
.....and their are principled Conservatives, I think their support will increase rapidly.

Iam64 Wed 06-Jul-22 18:33:35

Good posts MaizieD and MOnica

Listening to the Conservatives defending Johnson, reminded me of the Labour MPs who continued to defend Corbyn. To claim the ‘right wing media’ was on a witch hunt. I’ve heard Johnson supporters accusing ‘the media’ of leading a witch hunt into Johnson

These people are like groupies, they can’t see what’s under their nose

He might have had enough 4allweknow. It's not as if he needs the job.

Well they got rid of Theresa May now it looks like Boris will go. They need a strong leader that they all support to lead our country out of the mess it's in. If they call a snap election I think Labour will win. But Starmer doesn't strike me as very proactive: he took months to even come up with Labour's policies. Corbyn was a nice person but not very assertive.
Meeting later tonight I think

And that government comprised only those who showed allegiance to Johnson, not the best for the job.

M0nica Wed 06-Jul-22 19:02:54

I do not think Priti Patel has a cats chance in hell of being elected leader. I have yet to even see her name on a list of 5 or more potential leaders.

SunshineSally Wed 06-Jul-22 19:11:33

The Queen is now back at Windsor apparently … she’ll sort out the Big Dog ?

sazz1 Wed 06-Jul-22 19:14:58

Don't think she has any power to sack him.

M0nica Wed 06-Jul-22 19:27:55

But she can refuse him an election. Not sure that any monarch has ever done that, but she would be very carefully advised.

She can even put an alternative PM in, it seems

"She can say no to the Prime Minister if a parliament remained “vital, viable, and capable of doing its job”, if an election would be detrimental to the national economy or if she can find another MP who could “govern for a reasonable period with a working majority in the House of Commons”.  "

The trouble is that the last time she did that it did not end well, and I’m sure she probably vowed never to do so again.

No, I agree. It's highly unlikely but these are, it seems, the options.

It sounds like he isn't going.

So he’s challenging the 1922 committee, saying “do your worse”

He’s apparently pitching it as Johnson and the country? v. The Tory rebels.

Chewbacca Wed 06-Jul-22 20:25:34

The man's deluded! How can he possibly see himself as the Caped Crusader after half his cabinet have told him to go; they don't want or believe him any more? This is narcissism to the nth degree.

Good to see you back Whitewave, hope you're on the mend.
