That's it. No suprise there then.

He wouldn’t have put it all on the line if he had thought there was the slightest possibility it could have gone the other way

From the Guardian:
The force is Durham police who had cleared him once!

The force said it had come under pressure from some newspapers and Conservative MPs to look at the event again.

Starmer knows the law.

He has a reputation to uphold, he would not have knowingly broken the law.

MayBee70 Fri 08-Jul-22 12:59:27

Not surprised but so relieved. The Conservatives are still out to get him, though.

Casdon Fri 08-Jul-22 12:59:51

Starmer’s not a fool or a liar. There are some on Gransnet who will be most disappointed nonetheless.

You'd expect a former Director of Public Prosecutions to be just a wee bit clued up about rules of evidence and interpreting the law.

It was nonsense right from the start.

Zonne Fri 08-Jul-22 13:02:40

Just waiting for the conspiracy theories (not necessarily on Gransnet) to start.

MaizieD Fri 08-Jul-22 13:08:52

I'm sure they're flying on twitter grin.

There will be those who have said from the start that it would be a fix because the Durham Police Commissioner is Labour..

(Doesn't really explain how they let Cummings off for far more blatant actual rule breaking)

Boris Johnson's "Partygate" was November 2020, weeks before Christmas, when the general public were getting strong hints that Christmas would be on lockdown again, and there were no vaccines available.

Keir Starmers "Beergate" was April 2021. We were out of lockdown so my calendar tells me, and I (clinically vulnerable) was getting my second vaccine.

I think personally the timing of the vaccines should be considered. November 2020 they were a promise of something to come. In April 2021 we were looking at the end of dangerous Covid cases.

November 2020 Covid deaths in the UK reached 11,645.
April 2021 Covid deaths in the UK reached 1,242.

source www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-reported-sars-cov-2-deaths-in-england/covid-19-confirmed-deaths-in-england-to-31-april-2021-report

Further, "partygate" was social gatherings, undeniable and laughed about by Downing Street staff.

My opinion.

Great news. I never thought he would be found guilty. A man of decency and integrity. Good news Angela has also been cleared. Onwards and upwards to a Labour Government.

Farzanah Fri 08-Jul-22 13:28:45

From Twitter should the Daily Mail be fined for wasting police time? ?

Doodledog Fri 08-Jul-22 13:28:46

What Devorgilla said grin.

Yammy Fri 08-Jul-22 13:32:04

With all his legal knowledge why was he ever doubted?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 08-Jul-22 13:35:18

What I do think this shows is the level of pressure that can come from the press.

The police had looked at it, and pronounced no case to answer, and yet were forced by the DM to review their decision.

This can’t be right.

There needs to be a look at the type of power the press has and how undemocratic this country is as a result.

Exactly. But my very right-wing neighbour has just said "why did he have a beer then".

I did point out that they had been knocking on doors all day, the hotel was not serving meals, and why shouldn't he have a beer - but I don't think she will change her mind as the prejudice is well entrenched (she is otherwise a very nice person).

You would, wouldn't you Maizie. What a complete waste of money.

They won't but when they look how it's hacked into their budget they will probably wish they could.

MissAdventure Fri 08-Jul-22 13:50:05

He said he would resign if he was found to have breached any rules.
I have never doubted that he was being truthful.

I think it was a half baked story to try and distract from the real pee takers.

AGAA4 Fri 08-Jul-22 13:50:32

That's a relief. The Tories are in a complete mess so glad that Labour is still functioning.

Farzanah Fri 08-Jul-22 13:51:28

From Polly Toynbee Guardian columnist
Of all the guilty men and women in the dismal reign of Boris Johnson, the British right wing press bears heavy responsibility for what the country has become. From the self lacerating Brexit referendum to the elevation of a man they knew to be unfit, they set the pace, at the behest of extreme Brexiteer press barons - Murdoch-Rothermerd-Barclay foghorns still dominate the political landscape.

Mamie Fri 08-Jul-22 13:57:13

I like the typo of Rothermerd(e). Merde is about right.
???

I want to go and check, but I'm worried I'll end up wasting a lovely day correcting cretins!

Farzanah Fri 08-Jul-22 14:01:52

Ha ha, sorry!
