I’d feel I was in a cage surrounded by chickenwire

Well, she is an arriviste! New wealth but no class, flaunting the fact she can afford to pay a ridiculous amount of money on wallpaper! Unbelievably crass.

But is it really flaunting? You show your décor off once to your visitors, but from then on it is just you who wants to enjoy it for yourself. So you might as well choose something you like looking at 24/7. Nothing to do with showing off the price.

Whenever I decorate my home, Joseanne, it is for my pleasure, not for showing off to anyone who visits.
In Carrie’s example, yes, I do think it in bad taste to flaunt her wealth to the electorate, many of whom can only dream of decorating a humble home as they struggle to simply exist, keeping a roof over their heads and feeding their families from day to day. How must they feel when they see this example of spending silly amounts of money to decorate her hall?

Joseanne I knew that I’d see you here! grin
Yes, we are both wallpaper aficionados; and monkey fans! ?

Where can I see pictures of the actual Downing St flat? People are posting as though they're familiar with it.

I've lifted my comment from another thread. I would like to agree with**** that if you want to make a décor statement then that wallpaper did the job. It was bright and no doubt hit you on entering the rooms, but that shows you can be bold and experimental with fabrics and wallcoverings. If that is what Carrie likes, then good on her, and she isn't the only one. The prices are what they are for that sort of quality. Fanny you have seen my £200 a roll wall adornments!
And I do have a reputation for good taste!

The one in the picture is not dissimilar to a wallcovering I chose in France for a guest bedroom in blue. It looked lovely.

The Camerons refitted the kitchen at their own expense; no idea what the Blairs, Majors, Mays, etc did, nothing outlandish or expensive I would think.

And it's almost certain that Thatcher spent very little.

Yes but we, the taxpayer are now stuck with it and will be paying for the replacement.

Couldn't the next occupant remove the gold wallpaper and get scrap metal prices for it?

They'll only get 30k from public money...

I am really, really struggling to understand how Johnson got 200k out of a donor...

Riverwalk Sat 09-Jul-22 07:56:02

Have to admit I quite like it!

I wonder if Lord Wotsit would pay for my flat to be refurbished... mind he's a bit busy as he also funds Prince Charles in his property endeavours.

Whenever I see pictures of Lulu Lytle's designs I think it looks like traditional English Country House decor on some sort of mind altering substance. Laura Ashley on speed... hmm

Do you remember Ikea trying to get us to 'chuck out our chintzes'? In vain, I think ?

Taxpayers didn't pay for Carrie's wallpaper either. A tory donor with more money than sense (or the promise of a favour) did.

Calendargirl Sat 09-Jul-22 07:25:05

Personal choice?

Perhaps Carrie wouldn’t like our wallpaper, but she’ll never get to see it.

(I realise, of course, tax payers haven’t paid for our wallpaper).

Esspee Sat 09-Jul-22 07:23:49

Well done Fanny.

Esspee Sat 09-Jul-22 07:23:27

10 rolls are needed and cost £225 per roll.

FannyCornforth Sat 09-Jul-22 07:22:42

I think that Carrie Johnson has appalling taste (in several things) and that Lulu Lyttle saw her coming, as the saying goes.

wallpaper for a hallway?
