Chancellor challenged about law breaking

Dame Margaret Hodge has written to the new chancellor Nadhim Zahawi

“…I read with great concern reports in the Independent on Wednesday that you have previously been under investigation by the International Corruption Unit at the National Crime Agency, as recently as 2020, for potential issues linked to your business affairs…..these revelations do raise legitimate question marks over your suitability to take charge of the Treasury, especially at such a crucial time for our economy.”

She then goes on to ask a number of detailed questions on the subject of possible use of non dom status for tax avoidance, the possible use of offshore companies to evade/avoid tax, the possible lack of declaration in the MPs’ register of interests, whether he has used offshore companies based in tax havens to purchase properties in the U.K. to the value of £100 million and has he paid the requisite taxes including stamp duty plus whether he has declared all the properties in the MPs’ register of interests, and finally whether he still holds £20 million of You Gov shares in a Gibraltar based company, was it for the avoidance of tax, did he receive dividends and did he pay dividends tax in the U.K.

Pretty detailed questions and if Zahawi is unable to answer these questions satisfactorily then he will end up as yet another example of the Tories thinking there is one law for us and another for them.

Are you as shocked as I am?

I thought this had all been dealt with. It may be morally distasteful but as far as I'm aware, he's done nothing illegal.

I would not be surprised at anything any one these shysters have done. They are all crooks and robber barons. They set a shocking example of fraud and corruption to the people whom they were elected to serve. No wonder the black economy flourishes in this country. There is an old saying abour sauce for the goose ....

One of the problems with Sunak is that when challenged on any of these issues is that he shows a surprisingly thin skin, and this would not bode well should he gain the leadership. Which tbh I doubt.

It’s not about Sunak, WWM2, it’s about the current chancellor.

Good grief - this lot are as bad as each other, aren't they?

It seems that all the decent Tories were sacked or felt unable to work with Johnson. I was saying to my daughter the other day that I loathed Michael Heseltine back in the day, but he was on Newsnight on Tuesday and he seemed eminently reasonable compared to the charlatans we've got now. It was his policies I disliked (along with all of Thatcher's cabinet), but I didn't count the honest of any of them. I wouldn't trust any of this lot to tell me the right time.

To be fair to WW its quite easy to get confused at the moment it all blurs into one grin

Whitewavemark2 Sat 09-Jul-22 17:00:42

I seem to be permanently confused these days

Galaxy Sat 09-Jul-22 17:03:52

I think that was part of the Johnsons plan to be honest.

Blossoming Sat 09-Jul-22 21:22:42

I wasn’t criticising WWM2, just clarifying. There may be another chancellor tomorrow.

I feel you are thinking about a previous Chancellor.
The present Chancellor is Nadhim Zahawi.

Apparently he is saying in future he will allow access to his tax returns BUT when challenged he said he will not be doing that retrospectively.

Why not if he has nothing to hide?

Are you as shocked as I am?

Nope. Not in the least little bit. I'm waaaaaayyyy past shocked or surprised at anything I hear about them now.

Smileless2012 Tue 12-Jul-22 10:56:52

Oh yes blush they're coming and going so quickly, it's difficult to keep up.

Dinahmo Tue 12-Jul-22 12:09:52

He is, apparently, under investigation by HMRC.

Esspee Tue 12-Jul-22 12:24:37

It has been made abundantly clear that the upper level of the Tory party is divided into complete idiots such as Nadine Dorries and Andrea Jenkyns and very clever men who have become rich or remained rich as a result of bending the laws to ensure they don't pay tax.

Urmstongran Tue 12-Jul-22 12:28:24

Unless I’m missing a trick who starts with ‘nothing’ and ends up THAT rich? I don’t believe many do without some shenanigans in the background somewhere.

I just can’t keep up with who’s doing what any more confused

Glorianny Tue 12-Jul-22 13:41:40

If only they could turn their crooked and wily ways to sorting out the economy instead of lining their own pockets we'd be out of all the financial problems in no time!wink

i don't think he started with nothing, did he.
his father was a successful businessman, he went to private schools, studied chemical engineering at UCL, co-founded YouGov market research company, and worked for an oil company until 2018.
