Tory party members; choosing your next party leader and everyone's next PM, what, who, why?

Hopefully, this will not get too heated! If anyone on here is a member of the Tory party, and therefore responsible for electing the next leader of the party and thus PM, what qualities are you looking for? What will make you prefer one candidate over another? What negatives would discount a candidate for you?

‘They do, it’s called a general election.’
That’s my point; this new PM will not have been elected as a result of a General election. The outcome of the last election could have been different with an alternative Tory leader.

Her ‘soundbite’ slogan actually is:

PM4PM

I take it you’ve not yet spotted all the badges her supporters around Westminster are wearing Casdon? When she’s at a hustings podium she has a big PM4PM sign pinned at the front of the podium!

No I hadn’t, I’m not following the individual campaigns at all. From what I’ve seen reported today though perhaps her badges are apt, she seems to be the most popular.

I just think post menopause.

I’m not superstitious, but I’ve just noticed that Penny Mordaunt’s initial are PM. Surely that’s an omen?

Allsorts

Somebody that has integrity and loves the party and not have Johnson’s values. Although just 2 1/2 years he will be remembered for delivering Brexit, handling Covid as he did, two very life changing events and no one could have done it but him. His lies and cavalier attitude that he’s had all his life will continue, it’s like a game to him. If you can lie to your wives and children it’s obvious he will lie about anything he personally does, he thinks he’s above such scrutiny. However on the world stage he’s good, so that is the quality we need for the next pm. Can’t think of anyone with any personality either side really.

Brexit is not fully delivered until the Northern Ireland issue is resolved. Although some parts of the Covid crisis governing was excellent (as what was then known was CEV ’Boris Boxes’ turned up and I didn’t even know I was eligible. They were a life saver because I couldn’t get regular supermarket deliveries for weeks) I do think, however that a lot of money was spent on equipment that was not functional and there were some instances of MPs’ associates getting massive contracts when their businesses were not in the health equipment sector.

I mooted Penny Mordaunt to MrJ about three weeks ago as her only negative is she’s the Portsmouth MP (football dig, I’m Southampton ?). Should have had a small wager.

Iam64 Wed 13-Jul-22 19:36:58

Yes Labour could have elected Yvette Cooper rather than corbyn. If that had happened, our country wouldn’t be in such a mess
My question was which block woman ?

The tories could elect KB but I don’t believe she’s thr best candidate

Kandinsky Wed 13-Jul-22 19:34:36

It was four women and four men and in this grouping half were not white, so well done to the Party

100% agree!

Prentice Wed 13-Jul-22 19:19:06

Iam64 the Conservatives have a chance now to elect a black woman to the top job should they so choose.
Labour must have had chances in the past to elect a woman.
I agree Riverwalk and said so earlier in this discussion.

I find it so depressing to witness this sordid race to see who is readiest to deliver tax cuts. Do none of them understand the financial pressures and difficulties on the horizon? Where will they find the grants and financial measures to help already struggling families? Or do none of them care about such families? How can the NHS recover from its current doldrums? What happened to the promise to "fix the care system"? Do none of them care about our struggling public services? Is there no shred of compassion amongst Boris Johnson's would-be successors? It's one thing to be a "low tax party" but tax cuts have to be paid for and now is not the time to be rushing along this path. Hey-ho, Conservative Party members will do what they will do...

Riverwalk Wed 13-Jul-22 19:04:40

Fair dues to the Tories, of the six finalists only one is a white male.

No I am not contradicting myself, I said earlier that I was pleased to see so many of ethnic origin MP’s putting themselves forward for the job of Leader/PM, which I am.
I am a realist that when it comes to choosing a black woman, then none of the political parties will choose her.Labour have never even chosen a woman for the job and the Conservatives in my view, and as it is the members choice, will not do that either.I fully expect that Kemi will be given a good Cabinet job.
Ah, I see volver about the GI Jane comment, although that was the US Army and not the British Navy.
Superwoman? No, but confident and assertive, which for a woman in politics is a good thing.

Which black woman would/could either party have chosen Prentice
Yes, I do realise women were in a huge minority, black women more so

Saetana Wed 13-Jul-22 18:45:18

I do not believe that Kemi's race will have anything to do with whether or not she gets the top job. Her relative lack of experience is more likely to be a factor. People call the Conservative party racist - but half of the leadership candidates were from ethnic minorities, all achieved without any patronising positive discrimination.

Results of the first ballot are in - Hunt and Zahawi failed to get 30 votes so they are both out. Sunak got the most, followed by Mordaunt, Truss, Badenoch, Tugendhat with Braverman coming in last. I have a feeling Braverman will be the one with the lowest votes in the next stage tomorrow and hope her supporters switch their allegience to Kemi rather than Liz Truss. We do not want Truss as leader - she is a terrible speaker and almost as likely as Sunak to lose us that next election.

Prentice Wed 13-Jul-22 18:36:41

Ouf, thanks for clearing that up for me volver
So we both make mistakes, although of course, everybody does.

volver Wed 13-Jul-22 18:26:42

BTW, Wonderwoman isn't the same as Superwoman.

People seem to praise BJ for getting us through covid. Our amazing scientists put us in the forefront of race to develop vaccine. The our NHS rolled out the vaccine. The government implemented rules to stop the pread of covid - and then broke the rules. Could someone explain how BJ did a good job!!!

I'm with you on this! BJ was a hitchhiker on the vehicles that the REAL champions were driving.he did .....nope can't think of out decent he did! Oh just thought of one ! He was REALLY quick to take all the glory?!

He also missed several of the all important Cobra meetings in January, which a leader should have been pressent to plan strategies for the oncoming pandemic spreading across Europe .

Ben Wallace is not a candidate to choose from.
I thought Penny M had many good ideas from listening to her today, why is she a wannabe GI Jane.Just because she is good looking?

She's an Royal Naval reservist who thinks she's Wonderwoman.

growstuff Wed 13-Jul-22 17:27:09

Did you actually read the report Saetana?

Prentice You're contradicting yourself. You say neither political party will elect a black woman. If that's true, there is institutional racism.

I think the mistake is to assume that all black people make up a homogenous group. Badenoch's experience of racism is not the same as somebody from, for example, the Windrush generation or a Bangladeshi in an arranged marriage. She is from a privileged background and looks down on others from an ethnic minority background (and Muslims). When challenged on racism, her response is not to lecture her about racism because she knows what it's like to be black - but, in her view, institutional racism doesn't exist.

I can’t vote either but in order of who I would like as PM:

1. Kemi Badenoch
2. Suella Braverman
3. Penny Mordaunt
4. Pritti Patel

All women. I think it’s what the Tory party need.
Roll on Monday 5th September when the leader is announced.

Up then for PMQ’s against Keir Starmer on the Wednesday!

IMO:
#1 inexperienced
#2 too shouty doesn't listen
#3 wannabe G.I.Jane but all smiles and no idea
#4 raging racist.
Maybe the likes of Ben Wallace? Nah! He's got too much sense to destroy his life on the poison chalice game.

First 3? Pale/male/stale! Last 3? Right wing public school rich. That leaves? Ooh about 5 and a half members in whole party eh?!?
