Tory party members; choosing your next party leader and everyone's next PM, what, who, why?

Hopefully, this will not get too heated! If anyone on here is a member of the Tory party, and therefore responsible for electing the next leader of the party and thus PM, what qualities are you looking for? What will make you prefer one candidate over another? What negatives would discount a candidate for you?

I’m truly not rehashing the Brexit vote per se but some who voted Remain have also termed themselves ‘Rejoiners’. Hard negotiating needs to be done yet with Brussels (and Dublin). And the civil servants have an agenda over it. It’s not been ‘done’ it’s still soft and undercooked. We need someone to continue getting this over the line, which is the only reason I mentioned Tugendhat/Soubry.

Thank goodness Rees-Mogg has not thrown his hat into the ring as he is against abortion even in rape cases.

I'm glad not to be a Tory Party member, perish the thought, as would have real difficulty deciding who to vote for!

Brexiteers really need to leave that issue behind - you won, it's happened and it seems self-destructive to choose a leader on the basis of how they voted in the EU referendum.

But go ahead and vote for a tax-cutter, brexiteer, outlier, chancer, take your choice - the odder the better come the General Election!

Tom Tugendhat voted Remain in the Brexit vote.
No wonder Anna Soubry is a fan.

Thank you Laurenorder. It is good to read a calm, reasoned post about voting history and intent. I agree about Hunt; he is certainly more presentable on the world stage and his personal behaviour is presumably less sordid than Johnson's, but we need to remember that he was in charge of the NHS for a very long time, is pro privatisation and is responsible for many of the problems we have now. Not forgetting he marked operation cygnet as being too hard to deal with, thus is in my mind at least, hugely responsible for the excess deaths of covid19. My views on Johnson are in the public domain smile

Thanks Laura. I haven’t listened to all of it but Anna Soubry said on Any Questions that she liked Tom Tugendhat. She may mention others when I listen to the whole programme. I probably campaigned with more Conservative party members than Labour pre and post referendum. It does give you a different slant on things.

HousePlantQueen I voted for Boris Johnson, I knew all about his illustrious past but liked his optimism, positivity and forthright attitude.
I believed that he was egotistical enough to want to go down in history as a bloody good Prime Minister who levelled up our country. I suppose I voted with hope in my heart.
I didn’t fancy Hunt as I felt he’d made a mess dealing with The NHS.
I felt that he would have followed through, I like his handling of Ukraine, his handling of the vaccine, could have forgiven the parties but the straw that gave this camel the hump was the ridiculous inhumane idea of sending desperate people to Rwanda.

Btw I am white, female, elderly, lots of friends of various ethnicities, many of them Conservatives. Our sons their wives and many of their friends are middle aged, various ethnicities and also Conservatives. One voting grandson aged 18 also Conservative as are many of his friends.
Just had a chat with our Tesco delivery driver, black, male, mid twenties, loved BJ and thinks ‘The Mogg rocks’. Hey ho.

HousePlantQueen Mon 11-Jul-22 18:13:58

Thank you Lauren order, it was members such as yourself whose opinion I was interested in. Who did you vote for last time? Not being goady and you needn't reply if you don't wish to.

LauraNorderr Mon 11-Jul-22 18:08:46

As a fully paid up member of the Conservative Party I will have a vote between the final two. Looking at the candidates thus far I will struggle.
I will study them all and hopefully find one with some new ideas to make the necessary changes to take us forward in this very different world.
Integrity, compassion, a good grip of finance and economy, an optimistic but realistic outlook so that we can feel confident in our future. A statesman to earn respect on the world stage. A believer in aspiration and the know-how to create opportunity. Someone strong enough to take tough decisions and not court popularity but with the ability to take good advice and the wisdom to recognise good advice.
That’s it for now. Hoping for a miracle obvs.

If you were black as I am growstuff you certainly would not have to ask that question.
Getting on in any sphere, politics included is still harder for those of us with ethnic backgrounds.
Am not complaining at all, just seeing things for what they are.

Urmstongran Mon 11-Jul-22 16:53:35

Well from what I have heard of Kemi B. I like her. . It takes clarity of purpose and a robust personality to stand up to the civil serpents. Kemi seems to have it in spades.

Martinthebandit I am in agreement with you there.
What is heartening is the number of black or otherwise ethnic backgrounds now in Conservative politics as MP’s, putting themselves forwards with many backers for the position of PM.
I have no vote either, but hope the members make a wise choice this time.

What on earth has the colour of anybody's skin got to do with anything?

Badenoch denies that racism exists anyway. It's all in the minds of the "woke" apparently.

growstuff Mon 11-Jul-22 16:45:03

OMG! Urmstongran I really despair that anyone thinks Badenoch is a serious contender.

Ex member so not able to vote although I may rejoin soon.

If I could vote then if she was one f the final two Kemi Badenoch looks promising.

Promising for what? Hopefully, Badenoch won't make it through to the next round. She's my MP. Not only is she a useless constituency MP, but she's a careerist who has probably never had an original thought in her life.

Urmstongran Mon 11-Jul-22 16:42:00

I won’t rise to the bait varian. ?

varian Mon 11-Jul-22 16:28:39

I'm disappointed in your choice Ug. Surely you're backing Nadine Dorries?

Urmstongran Mon 11-Jul-22 16:15:33

I can’t vote either but in order of who I would like as PM:

1. Kemi Badenoch
2. Suella Braverman
3. Penny Mordaunt
4. Pritti Patel

All women. I think it’s what the Tory party need.
Roll on Monday 5th September when the leader is announced.

Up then for PMQ’s against Keir Starmer on the Wednesday!

There won’t be many as if the demography is correct, most members are elderly, wealthy southern white males.

Is that a true fact?
As I know some and they are all women or young Tories.

On here Visgirl? smile

Allsorts Mon 11-Jul-22 15:58:07

Somebody that has integrity and loves the party and not have Johnson’s values. Although just 2 1/2 years he will be remembered for delivering Brexit, handling Covid as he did, two very life changing events and no one could have done it but him. His lies and cavalier attitude that he’s had all his life will continue, it’s like a game to him. If you can lie to your wives and children it’s obvious he will lie about anything he personally does, he thinks he’s above such scrutiny. However on the world stage he’s good, so that is the quality we need for the next pm. Can’t think of anyone with any personality either side really.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 11-Jul-22 15:57:54

I am sure there are some young females, but the majority are as described.
