Well am not surprised.. Are you? Feel dismayed by the Cons and the awful skullduggery that has gone on..need a glass or 2..hmm

But we didn’t have to worry about it before brexit, did we? Which I didn’t ask for.

Callistemon21 Thu 21-Jul-22 20:03:39

What didn't we have to worry about?

I'm not that trusting abut food sources.
.

Callistemon21 Thu 21-Jul-22 20:07:23

Spanish tomatoes?
Sprayed with pesticides

Animal welfare?
EU countries flout animal welfare laws.

Cynical, moi?
Of course I am!

Witzend Thu 21-Jul-22 20:11:51

For a long time now I have not bought any Danish, or any other non U.K. pork or bacon. Any other meat I buy - not that we eat nearly so much any more - is always U.K. reared, higher welfare.

I won’t buy Danish butter either. Denmark is notorious for factory farming. I often wonder why so many people are keen to support Danish farmers, rather than our own.

Richard Ratcliffe's view of Liz Truss

I lost interest when Kemi Badenoch was voted out. She hadn't prepared months in advance, apparently it was a last minute decision round the kitchen table, no huge teams etc behind her like Truss and Sunak - and look how well she did. She came out on top in my opinion on the ITV debate. Truss or Sunak - I despair.

That's strange! It's been obvious to her constituents since she was selected that she wanted the top job. She's been coming out with the same little anecdotes for years and had Michael Gove supporting her. She's also part of a clique centred on the Spectator and the London Assembly.

"It's not about what is the right course to follow for the benefit of the nation as a whole, or the wellbeing of its citizens, or dealing with any of the issues facing millions of people... it's about one thing and one thing only, the survival of the Tory party. They want Johnson on the ballot simply because he has voter-appeal and might keep them in power."

How on earth do you expect any party to deal with these issues if they are not in government?

Is there anyone on here prepared to give a new prime minister a chance?

Part of her carefully cultivated public persona, perhaps?

A poll by YouGov of party members put Truss in the lead so far, with 62% to Sunak's 38%.

Not when all they talk about is whether to increase or reduce taxes and seem oblivious to what’s facing the people who vote for them this winter.

If you mean the current two contenders, then my answer has to be 'No'. Looking at their records in office and their beliefs, and the fact that they will be obliged to conciliate the ERG faction to get any legislation passed, I can't see either of them doing the country any good.

MayBee70 Thu 21-Jul-22 21:03:12

Out of interest, how many people actually look up an MP’s voting record?

If you believe that you’ll believe anything.

Out of interest, where do you think in the political spectrum Kemi stands?

RichmondPark1 Thu 21-Jul-22 21:44:56

MayBee70 I look up MPs voting records. It's the measure of them.

Tory MPs including Truss and Sunak mostly vote against
-measure to prevent climate change
-raising benefits at least in line with prices
-a bankers bonus tax
-laws to promote equality and human rights

They mostly vote for
-a reduction in spending on welfare benefits
- reducing the rate of corporation tax

vegansrock Thu 21-Jul-22 21:53:16

Liz never mentions public services, the climate crisis or levelling up. it’s all tax cuts…blah blah blah….I will not rest till British apples are top of the tree …blah blah blah…tax cuts …..then she smiles as if she’s been so clever. Can’t believe such a cardboard cut out is thought to be the best out of 350 or so MPs.

MayBee She is, perhaps, not right-wing in the way people usually understand it. She is a libertarian, who does not believe that the state should have many powers at all. She would probably feel most at home with the US Republicans.

She’d probably feel most at home with the Tweenies. I don’t think she deeply believes in anything at all except herself and being patted on the head for being a good girl. I don’t like him, but I do feel sorry for Sunak because it’s not a level playing field, he’s clearly head and shoulders above her to all except the numpties.

Dinahmo Thu 21-Jul-22 22:21:20

The literal translation of foie gras is fat liver. Much of it comes from ducks, the meat from which is eaten. My French teacher used to say, when people complained about foie gras "you eat duck don't you?"

Mollygo Thu 21-Jul-22 22:31:22

Sunak or maybe his supporters apparently said that if Truss wins, Tories will lose the next election. Does he or they not think they’ll lose next time anyway?

I wish. We don't seem to have that choice ... yet.
