The state doesn't seem to be in control of anything at the moment.

But it's supposed to be in control of the NHS and the criminal justice system. And it's supposed to have some sort of concern for the health and welfare of its citizens. How would putting these into private hands make it any better?

I don't even know what you mean by this I just don't think more state control of this, that and the next thing will help,

I'm not asking for more state control of anything, just more competent and effective running of the stuff its meant to be responsible for.

As for someone else's stupid comment about 'incompetent civil servants', what an insult to them. They're the only people who are keeping the country ticking over at the moment and the government is supposed to be in control of them, too.

Kemi is a supporter of small state isn't she? How will that improve the NHS situation?

WRT to those daft excuses of global pandemic and war in Ukraine, in the first instance, a competent government would have been better prepared to deal with a pandemic, having not spent a decade running the NHS into the ground.

Not forgetting that the government completely ignored all the recommendations of a report done just prior to the pandemic which found that the government was woefully underprepared for a pandemic.

We don't have a cost of living crisis, the NHS at breaking point, broken criminal justice system, an ongoing pandemic that government is ignoring but is causing high levels of illness, long term sickness and loss of working days for businesses and the public sector, businesses closing left right and centre because they can no longer trade frictionlessly with the EU, animals being slaughtered and crops rotting in the fields because there's no-one to process or harvest them?

Course not. All that lot is just normal and fine.

The second instance really doesn't seem to have affected daily life in the UK in any way, apart from a shortage of sunflower oil, so how does it excuse incompetent government?

Haven't you noticed we have had a tory government for 12 years? Well before covid19 and Ukraine which are post 2020 events.

But they do say people get the government they deserve. Oh boy!

Sunak's national emergency approach smacks of control freakery to me, though I agree with him about how much needs fixing.

Truss doesn't really appeal either. But that's the choice Tory members have. Sheesh!

That said, I can't think of any promising leaders in other parties either so a general election would be just as depressing. The national emergency is rubbish politicians of all stripes.

I am not over-confident about our political future but on the whole I prefer Rishi Sunak's admission of emergency to Liz Truss's Carry On Regardless.

I'm just amazed at the lack of awareness of any responsibility for the state of things from someone who has been a senior member of the government. As for Truss, heaven help us..........
