Sunak - State of Emergency

Apparently the country faces 5 national emergencies. NHS, economy, immigration etc. I think that I must have missed something, I thought that we had had a Tory government for 12 years so who is responsible for bringing the country to it's knees??

Ailidh Sat 23-Jul-22 08:09:23

I am not over-confident about our political future but on the whole I prefer Rishi Sunak's admission of emergency to Liz Truss's Carry On Regardless.

I'm just amazed at the lack of awareness of any responsibility for the state of things from someone who has been a senior member of the government. As for Truss, heaven help us..........

Daisymae Haven't you noticed that there has been a global pandemic which is still ongoing, plus the war in Ukraine?

Baggs Sat 23-Jul-22 09:45:56

Sunak's national emergency approach smacks of control freakery to me, though I agree with him about how much needs fixing.

Truss doesn't really appeal either. But that's the choice Tory members have. Sheesh!

That said, I can't think of any promising leaders in other parties either so a general election would be just as depressing. The national emergency is rubbish politicians of all stripes.

Baggs Sat 23-Jul-22 09:46:18

But they do say people get the government they deserve. Oh boy!

Haven't you noticed we have had a tory government for 12 years? Well before covid19 and Ukraine which are post 2020 events.

MaizieD Sat 23-Jul-22 10:09:25

So everything is just hunkydory, then, Baggs?

We don't have a cost of living crisis, the NHS at breaking point, broken criminal justice system, an ongoing pandemic that government is ignoring but is causing high levels of illness, long term sickness and loss of working days for businesses and the public sector, businesses closing left right and centre because they can no longer trade frictionlessly with the EU, animals being slaughtered and crops rotting in the fields because there's no-one to process or harvest them?

Course not. All that lot is just normal and fine.

WRT to those daft excuses of global pandemic and war in Ukraine, in the first instance, a competent government would have been better prepared to deal with a pandemic, having not spent a decade running the NHS into the ground.

The second instance really doesn't seem to have affected daily life in the UK in any way, apart from a shortage of sunflower oil, so how does it excuse incompetent government?

mayisay Sat 23-Jul-22 10:16:06

Don't let us forget the incompetent Civil Service!

Baggs Sat 23-Jul-22 10:45:33

You seem to have misinterpreted what I said, maiz.

Baggs Sat 23-Jul-22 10:46:33

I’m VERY dissatisfied with the state of the country , same as you.

Baggs Sat 23-Jul-22 10:49:58

I just don't think more state control of this, that and the next thing will help, mainly because it clearly hasn't helped so far. You can put me in the Kemi Kamp if you need a label.

WRT to those daft excuses of global pandemic and war in Ukraine, in the first instance, a competent government would have been better prepared to deal with a pandemic, having not spent a decade running the NHS into the ground.

Not forgetting that the government completely ignored all the recommendations of a report done just prior to the pandemic which found that the government was woefully underprepared for a pandemic.

RichmondPark1 Sat 23-Jul-22 10:58:16

Kemi is a supporter of small state isn't she? How will that improve the NHS situation?

MaizieD Sat 23-Jul-22 11:28:54

The state doesn't seem to be in control of anything at the moment.

But it's supposed to be in control of the NHS and the criminal justice system. And it's supposed to have some sort of concern for the health and welfare of its citizens. How would putting these into private hands make it any better?

I don't even know what you mean by this I just don't think more state control of this, that and the next thing will help,

I'm not asking for more state control of anything, just more competent and effective running of the stuff its meant to be responsible for.

As for someone else's stupid comment about 'incompetent civil servants', what an insult to them. They're the only people who are keeping the country ticking over at the moment and the government is supposed to be in control of them, too.

Sparklefizz Haven't you noticed that the global pandemic and the war in Ukraine have not affected services in other European countries as much as in the UK? Here in Erupe we're generally doing OK thank you.

Dinahmo Sat 23-Jul-22 11:43:00

sorry - Europe - finger slipped

Dinahmo Sat 23-Jul-22 11:46:24

I'm not sure that many people know what a small state is. There would be no NHS for a start.

Baggs Sat 23-Jul-22 11:48:16

The state doesn't seem to be in control of anything at the moment.

We agree on that at least ….. so why give them more is my view.

RichmondPark1 Sat 23-Jul-22 11:54:09

On that basis Baggs are you suggesting anarchy as the only solution to a failing government?

MaizieD Sat 23-Jul-22 12:04:42

Where have I asked for the state to be given more?

(P.S for 'state' please read 'the party that has been in government for the last 12 years)

Nanna58 Sat 23-Jul-22 12:09:45

I’m very concerned about Truss’ let’s just extend our debts ad infinitum policy, we are in such a state tho I’m not sure anyone short of Superwomen, ( or man!) can get us back out

JaneJudge Sat 23-Jul-22 12:15:14

those of us who have to deal with the social care system know exactly who is to blame for the emergency angry

Sorry, I really don't think this a fair comment.

Civil servants are as frustrated as everybody else by the disorganisation from the politicians.

Smileless2012 Sat 23-Jul-22 12:20:03

I agree Ailidh it looks as if it's going to be the lesser two evils and for me, Rishi's the lesser of the two.
