Apparently the U.K. is not going to send any more money anywhere to the poorest people in the world.

The need has never been greater.

I think Ukraine are in greater need than Africa at this present time.

You know Africa's a whole continent, yes? Maybe not.

These threads always have a ‘we’re good, you’re bad’ type vibe about them.
Almost crying out for a big disagreement so certain people can post about how wonderful they are.
It’s an anonymous forum on the internet, no one knows you ( or cares )
Empty vessels make the most noise could well be true.

This reminds me of a meeting at our local vicarage that Edwina Curry attended. When asked about what we’d all done to help third world countries I said I’d done a sponsored fast and had raised a few pounds ( I’ve never been any good at asking people to sponsor me!). She sneeringly said she’d had a garden party and had raised hundreds. To which someone else said ‘ she hasn’t got rich friends like you’. And I got up and went home…..

Not a word of criticism about the dictator governments who steal aid from their own people leave them starving and destitute. Robert Mugabe anyone? Yes I know he's dead,at last, thank goodness, but his successor isn't much better despite the promises. If governments had spent aid wisely and fairly, these countries would be thriving after all these years, but corruption and terror makes sure that the poor stay poor and true democracy is a distant dream for most of the population.. Isn't the name of this thread Starving Africa? so why the accusations of misunderstanding?

You're not getting this, are you?

Read the ******* link.

I've just got the popcorn out!

Tried one or two responses but would be deleted. So I'll just watch the mean minded having an apoplectic fit...

Normally an entirely different budget.

This has nothing to do with it. It is an excuse.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 27-Jul-22 17:33:17

The Tories have been after cutting aid since they got in, but there was a sizeable rebellion, now this has been slid under the door during recession and the Tories focus on their own navels.

Its not about the starving in Africa.

Well, to be fair, that's what the thread title is 'Starving in Africa'.

Just don't expect open minds from some posters..

Open minds or coherent thought.

You are virtual signaling again, you know nothing about me or my lovely family, perhaps you should watch what you say about other posters.

Right I’ve just come back into this.

Rory Stewart said on his podcast that the U.K. government has decided to cut all foreign aid, because they are “helping” Ukraine

He also said that it was an outrageous thing to as Africa is in a worse state than the past 40 years. Think drought etc. They are being devastatingly hit as a result of our carbon emissions. Not theirs - ours.

Thanks for the information Maybee.

Then the thread title should be changed volver and perhaps the OP should have contained more information.

Well the OP can read the link too. And we can all learn something.

As far as I recall WWM2 isn't at all averse to actually basing her opinions on reality. Unlike some.

Virtual signalling on Gransnet me thinks makes some feel good about themselves I suppose. What are you doing personally for the starving in Africa?

My goodness what an unpleasant comment.

You have no idea what individuals are doing. Neither is it any of your business.

Galaxy Wed 27-Jul-22 17:24:58

I know volver is desperately trying to give the facts but can I also say there is something pointless about asking people what they may personally be doing. Does this apply to all subjects? Am I allowed to express a view on domestic violence if I dont volunteer at a refuge, am I allowed to express a view on child labour if I am personally not storming the factories.

volver Wed 27-Jul-22 17:24:07

Like I said....don't confuse people with facts when they have already made up their minds.

No thanks. I'm pleased they are cutting the aid.

Maudi Wed 27-Jul-22 17:16:46

Well that's what the thread is called. Well what are GN posters who are upset about the money being stopped doing?

volver Wed 27-Jul-22 17:14:34

Its not about the starving in Africa.

Maudi Wed 27-Jul-22 17:13:16

Yes all those upset about the starving in Africa on GN what are you doing about it or are you just giving it word service? Or getting a few digs in about other posters who don't agree with you probably.
