What a rollercoaster ride that was. I remember the euphoria when we got the games. I went into town that day and I was chatting to people in the street who were equally as jubilant. Then I was trying on shoes in a shop when I heard of the bombings: I apologised to the assistant and said I was sorry but I had to leave. It was heartbreaking. As with the Birmingham pub bombings I think we all knew someone that were affected by it. Then the games themselves. Everything about them was perfect. I remember going into the garden to do a bit of gardening; came back in a jokingly said to DH ‘ I suppose we’ve won a couple more medals while I’ve been outside’. And we had! It annoys me that Johnson took the credit for the games when it was the Blair government that put all the hard work into getting them. It’s been downhill all the way since then.How a country ( and the world) can change so much in 10 years is beyond me. I wish I could capture the essence of those weeks, put them in a bottle and take a sniff every now and again. They were pure magic.

Yes it displays an open all encompassing country so different to now. Brexit land is closed, small and mealy mouthed.

The Commonwealth Games commence in Birmingham tomorrow, just saying…

Some articles are describing it as a Lefty dream. No wonder certain posters will love it. At the time I thought the adulation of the NHS was a bit cringey. You’d think other countries didn’t have a (better in some respects) functioning health service.

Yes the Telegraph ran a campaign against it calling as ug said too leftie.

But bearing in mind that probably 99% of people relied on it, I can’t see how that worked.
