Johnson on TV today. Telling those with an old kettle to buy a new one for around £20 to save yourself £10 a year on electricity.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 02-Sept-22 17:24:38

Roll on Monday when we can close the door on his premiership, but then have to face up to the next idiot.

Dear oh dear

HousePlantQueen Fri 02-Sept-22 19:59:02

The words "frying pan" and "fire" come to mind WwMk2.

Callistemon21 Fri 02-Sept-22 20:03:10

Callistemon do you not think our poor overworked PM deserved to have two holidays in close proximity of each other?

Of course, Charleygirl, poor love must be exhausted.
Just as I'm glad he managed to have a lovely party gathering of colleagues on my special birthday to which I wasn't invited.

Anyone got the bunting ready? Don't keep it up for too long though, someone might think you're celebrating the arrival of the new PM.

sarahcyn Sun 04-Sept-22 11:34:32

I can't believe people are still jumping on this one. It's a classic example of how Labour take remarks out of context and blow them up.
He wasn't suggesting you buy a new kettle to save energy. He was just using it as an analogy.

Why do a small number of party members get to choose our next Prime Minister? We actually elect our MPs - though admittedly its a rotten system - we need fairer voting. But MPs have some legitimacy as some people in the general population voted for them - so why don't MPs choose the next prime minister? It would not guarantee that they chose a good, wise person with high ideals - but at least there would be just a bit of democracy involved, and it would not take many weeks of fighting and no visible government.

Beeb Sun 04-Sept-22 11:43:14

Thanks sarahcyn that explains it.

FannyCornforth Sun 04-Sept-22 11:44:58

Sarahcyn yes, he was using the ‘buying a new kettle’ thing as an analogy for spending money on nuclear energy.
But he might have known that it would be picked up on, and taken out of context.
Another dead cat maybe.
Who knows what goes on in his head?

FarNorth Sun 04-Sept-22 11:52:35

Definitely a dead cat.

What goes on in his head is how to get what he wants in every situation.

Cant stand the man - please just go away and stay away. The very worst PM weve ever had

Yet hmm

Dinahmo Sun 04-Sept-22 12:18:12

Analogy or not - a new nuclear power station is going to take 10 years to build and come on stream. There will still be the problem of what to do with the nuclear waste. I don't think there is a definitive, safe answer to that problem yet. Plus the cost which for those of you who believe it, is going to massively increase the "debt" which has to be repaid by your children, grandchildren and maybe even your great grandchildren.

No different to those annoying programs showing a family how they could save money! They have a eg £ 800 vacuum but one costing £400 would be just as good saving them £400. No it wouldn't: they already have a vacuum so why spend £400 to buy another. They end the programs stating the family could save £xxxx which is rubbish statement as the expensive items they already own

spabbygirl Sun 04-Sept-22 12:38:21

Loved the comment about Monty Python! This gov't are indeed Pythonesque!

People knew what he meant Sarahcyn the whole issue of buying a new kettle is crazy for people who can't afford food, Boris comment was absurd!

We need a general election, I can't wait to get rid of this gov't, Truss will have to appease Tory donors too, so I don't expect much change.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 04-Sept-22 12:47:00

However, I do love a money saving tip from an Old Etonian...

Disgruntled Sun 04-Sept-22 12:54:15

Loved this thread. I do wonder if Liz Truss will be The Last Straw and people will take to the streets. There were the poll tax riots and that was just one subject. Worryingly, though, Janet S-P on HIGNFY said 43% of Tory voters would like him back. shock

FannyCornforth Sun 04-Sept-22 13:05:17

Spabby but it wasnt about buying a new kettle

Apparently, there is plotting underway to get Truss out and Johnson back in asap

Nannapat1 Sun 04-Sept-22 13:58:00

There's lots of 'helpful' advice out there, including from energy companies themselves in which one is urged to spend a great deal in order to 'save' when in reality it would take years to break even, assuming you had the money in the first place! Particularly upsetting when so many already don't have enough for food and energy.
As for the leadership shambles, polite words fail me!

Gabrielle56 Sun 04-Sept-22 14:24:41

Lazy good for nowt bunch of pervs! Want the Dosh , not the graft! When WILL this country learn eh?!?!? Conservatives only want to conserve their way of life exacas it's always been and currently is- rich getting richer - sod everyone else.........

Gabrielle56 Sun 04-Sept-22 14:29:53

Gentlemen's support garment ( ahem) asked what her first task in #10 will be? I suspect filling in gouges in plasterwork where carrie Antoinette has ripped off that cheap and nasty b,&q Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen range paper off!!......... And unblocking the bogs of all the crap fatso has dumped in there when the commons chamber(pot) was full?

I was surprised to learn that my 15 year old tutee has been able to vote, as he's a Conservative Party member.

nipsmum Sun 04-Sept-22 14:41:26

I get the impression we are not hearing anything from our politicians because none of them know what to say far less what to do. They rabbit on about nothing because they don't have a clue what's required.

Nannina Sun 04-Sept-22 14:43:38

He’s jinxed my kettle -just over a year old, so just out of guarantee, and started tripping my electrics this morning

HannahLoisLuke Sun 04-Sept-22 15:15:56

RichmondPark1

Two years to recoup your investment. He's not going to start a rush on kettle futures with that advice.

Anyway, isn't it cheaper to boil water in a pan on the gas hob?

The man's an ass hat.

I took the advice of a Gran on here a few weeks ago and bought a stove top kettle and it is indeed cheaper to boil it on the hob than use an electric kettle, so mines mothballed at the moment.

Polly7 Sun 04-Sept-22 15:35:08

I was staggered the suggestion to lower taxes without mention that it doesn’t help the lowest paid a jot as you don’t pay tax under 12k?‍♀️
Iv come to conclusion need idiot guide advertised
Eg. If you get monthly pension of £800 and pay £450 say on energy pm,
After paying council tax bills food unexspecteds , this leaves……….oh I forgot my little jalopy

Polly7 Sun 04-Sept-22 15:38:04

Will it still remain cheaper to boil kettle on hob or switch it on?
I need a kettle!!! ?????

FB market here i come ?

Callistemon21 Sun 04-Sept-22 15:47:36

I boil a kettle of water to use rather than heating up potatoes in cold water on the hob.
hmm perhaps I should check.
