I’m starting a thread so we can add our thoughts and hopes for the future. The King will address the nation at midday.

He and Camilla have my support although I know not everyone feels that way.

God Save the King.

Oh, all that upheaval every 4 or 5 years, campaigning, arguing, them trying not to be political because we want a constitutional Head of State .......

As Brenda said "not another one"

merlotgran Sat 10-Sept-22 20:59:24

A monarch does not, and as said, is actually not allowed to get involved in any political judgement or decision whatsoever.

So what’s the problem? We still get to vote for somebody to do that.

Win, win!

I’d rather have an idiot we voted for than a genius born into it.

Well we’ve seen what happens when you get the first part of that!
Be careful what you wish for.

Fleurpepper Sat 10-Sept-22 20:52:29

Luckygirl said 'On balance I think having a monarchy beats having a president '

but there is no comparison whatsoever. A president is elected and makes major decisions for the Country and its people- a Monarch does not, and as said, is actually not allowed to get involved in any political judgement or decision whatsoever.

^Charles will have to slim it all down^

If he slims it down much more he’ll be advertising for volunteers.

?

Given that this country has shown itself to be adept at voting for dangerous idiots, be careful what you wish for...!

I won't be queuing up!

If we made a habit of continuing to vote for idiots after recognising that one had got through our defences, we'd be idiots ourselves and might need a born genius or two to dig us out of the hole.

On balance I think having a monarchy beats having a president - but that is solely dependent on who inherits the crown - as someone said upthread, it could have been a King Andrew (I know succession-wise it would not be, but I am sure you take the point.). So Charles is a better bet.

But he will have to think very hard about how the monarchy functions and what it costs. I know that the expenditure on the monarchy is recouped to some degree by the tourist attraction, so we don't really want him in jeans - but I sometimes wonder as I watch these people dressed up in archaic costumes and repeating words from hundreds of years ago if that is the image we want to project of our country.

Charles will have to slim it all down and recognise that some people feel uncomfortable about that expenditure when families are facing the "heat or eat" choice this year.

I recognise that he has done some good charity work - and more of the same would be great - using his high profile for good. But he has also made some dreadful mistakes in life (as we all have) and he must not be deified. He is a fallible human being as we all know only too well.

I wish him luck in his new job and hope that he will set about modernising the monarchy, as other countries have succeeded in doing.

Allsorts

You can’t forget what H and M did and said, she’s got a nerve I’ll give you that. The DM reported what happened, everyone is a free agent to forgive and forget, they haven’t the life they wanted and want back in to the family they publicly criticised and got paid for doing it. They have shown what they are.

They are not the only ones showing what they are, are they Allsorts?

merlotgran Sat 10-Sept-22 19:28:20

Who has said there’s nothing wrong with it?

Like previous posters I am disgusted with the Daily Wail(as I refer to it)
I know have said this before, but never again all be tempted to read anything on that paper 's site.
Now I have got that over with, I could see the late Queen's face in Charles during his speech. He also looks a bit like the Duke of Windsor.

How anyone could read this disgusting rag, and stand firm that there is nothing wrong with it, is just unreal.

Iam64 Sat 10-Sept-22 19:24:03

I hope that the royal family can show a greater ability to forgive each other, to follow the wonderful example set by their matriarch and our Queen.
Estrangement is heart breaking for everyone involved.

merlotgran Sat 10-Sept-22 18:54:58

I’ve just had a quick look at the DM.

What have they said that I must have missed?

Velcro ?
I won't tell The Royal School of Needlework!

ixion Sat 10-Sept-22 16:53:37

Velcro?
(And they could knock up a W while they're there for the future).

Callistemon21 Sat 10-Sept-22 15:15:43

The Royal School of Needlework will volunteer, I'm sure ?
They are the specialists.

MaizieD Sat 10-Sept-22 15:13:30

Though, IIRC, they only said ER, no II.

Just had a look, a bit of unpicking and stitching is involved rather than embroidery.
How many?

By the time Liizz Truss's dream of returning working conditions to the Victorian era is realised they'll have seamstresses working all night to unpick them and reuse the threads to turn the E into a C and, C being less complex than E, there should be enough left for the extra I. All for £5 per completed garment...
