I’m starting a thread so we can add our thoughts and hopes for the future. The King will address the nation at midday.

He and Camilla have my support although I know not everyone feels that way.

God Save the King.

Get your needle out Calli! I think it might be a bit tricky to turn ERII into CRIII though.

It gave me a moment's sadness to see ER on the trumpeter's uniforms. I expect they'll all get changed now.

Careful, Maizie - someone will pop up moaning about the cost.

Here I am ?

Surely they don't all need replacing, just a bit of re-embroidering?
Waste not, want not.

I look forward to this new Caroleon age. King Charles has had a long apprenticeship and will make a good job of it. God Save the King.

Goodness DaisyAnne I’d forgotten the scold’s or gossips bridle. I wouldn’t want a return to burning or drowning but I would like to see unfounded, speculative, malicious gossip treated with contempt.
The DM is widely read on line (guilty as charged today). It’s campaign against Harry and Megan is unspeakable. In today’s paper, she’s referred to dismissively and rudely as “Markle”. If that newspaper stopped peddling malice I do believe we’d be a happier country

Sorry about the misquote everyone, they are still beautiful words and so meaningful at this time.

lemsip Charles’ reference to Harry and his wife is being widely reported in the UK press as being ‘reconciliatory’, and ‘sending an olive branch’

I’ve just skimmed the Daily Mail. It’s continuing it’s anti H and M campaign, most unnecessary and unkind.
My impression from King Charles was he deliberately mentioned love and support for Harry and his family because, like most parents, he loves his son and wishes him well.

There are always some who make you understand why the "Scold's" or "Gossip's" bridal was invented. Not that it was a good thing but, in those times, extreme or ill-informed gossip led to people being burned to death or drowned. Now the gossips use their unfounded and speculative opinions to burn reputations and drown out the good.

I wish there was some way we could invent a "bridle" for the malicious and commonly untrue gossip on the internet.

Why did that chap bow continuously during the mayoral proclamation? Like to know the history.

Sara1954 Sat 10-Sept-22 13:37:03

I have always had a soft spot for King Charles, I believe that basically he’s a good, kind honourable man.
Of course he’s flawed, but who isn’t?
I think Camilla is a wonderful down to earth woman, I think if they happened to pop in for a cup of tea, I would be able to get on with them very well, they seem so ‘normal’

I’m just living this elongated history lesson. I’m not a morning person but DH woke me up this morning saying you’ve got to watch this. Just heard about what a coat of arms is. I do love pomp and ceremony and do feel very patriotic. I thought the Coldstream Guards were going to be disbanded a few years ago?

^He has faced hostility and been disparaged on many fronts in the past^

Hope this isn't too frivolous, but one of the things the poor guy was disparaged for was his rather prominent ears.. I couldn't help thinking while watching his speech that he has 'grown into' his ears. Not sticking out at all grin That's one less thing for the mockers to fasten on...

Echo your thoughts on being too frivolous but, he is one of those men who has become better looking with age, dont you think?

Grantanow Sat 10-Sept-22 11:37:31

It really is unbelievable how the Queen's death and the King's accession have driven other, important news to the margins, if not off the page completely. Ukraine? Cost of living? Energy?

icanhandthemback Sat 10-Sept-22 11:37:04

I feel sorry for Charles in that he has lost his mother and the role he is stepping into is probably very daunting no matter how long he has been in training. The speech was good and it was nice to hear him mention Harry.
However, I will never sing the National Anthem again and will never refer to Camilla as Queen. I hope they are very happy and I hope for the Nation's sake he will be a good King. I don't wish either of them ill, I just can't get past what they did to their children. I wouldn't want William to be King just yet because his children are still young and he needs to be there for them. When his time comes, I am sure he will be an outstanding King.

Parsley3 Sat 10-Sept-22 11:28:46

(Posted too soon)
I felt sorry for him when his private life was open to public ridicule. I am willing him to be content in his role as King and I hope that he is successful in winding down the pomp and circumstance so that William can take over a slimmed down and modern monarchy.

I am often critical of the deference and privilege afforded to the Royal Family but I didn't realise until now that I actually have a soft spot for Charles. He always wore such a pained expression

The final quote of the speech brought a lump to my throat -

May flights of angels take thee to thy rest

That was truly beautiful sodapop

Did he say that? Shakespeare wrote “Flights of angels sing thee to thy rest”.

The line before that is "Goodnight, sweet prince."

That bit of “Hamlet” always reduces me to tears - even although I know it is coming!
A bit like the death of the Queen really.

MawtheMerrier Sat 10-Sept-22 11:11:51

I may be projecting my own feelings, but I am sensing a very real affection for our new King. He has faced hostility and been disparaged on many fronts in the past for views E.g on the environment which have since become widely accepted. He has coped with criticism and some have feared he would not be able to fill his mother’s extremely large boots.
But his words, his manner and his obvious sensitivity certainly endear him to me.

JaneJudge Sat 10-Sept-22 11:05:48

I thought his speech was good and I think he was just telling everyone he loved both his sons and their wives! why do people have to read anything into it

Whitewavemark2 Sat 10-Sept-22 11:05:02

There seems to be a huge amount of goodwill towards the new king.

I think he will do well.

I noticed earlier in the thread that hollysteers had seen a resemblance to Earl Mountbatten during the King’s speech. I too saw someone 3 or 4 times but it was Prince Phillip. I’ve never seen it before.

Yes I noticed that for the 1st time yesterday.

On Newscast Nicholas Soames, who has known Charles for 62 years, said that he is a very good writer, so I would think that he wrote the majority of his speech himself.

It was very moving He seemed close to tears.

Michael D Highins is a published writer but he still has a couple of staff who draft his speeches. All heads of state do. It just wouldn't be possible for them to write all their own scripts. Of course Charles would have wanted significant input into this one but I doubt very much he wrote it entirely on his own from scratch.
