You are right Annie. Also Counsellors of State are appointed from among the four adults next in succession (provided they have reached the age of 21).

That doesn't sound to me as if Charles had much choice and he has no actual reason not to choose Andrew who may have been found guilty by the press and some of those on here but has not been found guilty of anything in law.

To suggest that 200,000 people turning out to pay their respects, means that a whole country monolithically "loves" a person most of them have never met doesn't even meet the criterion for puerile.

To imply that a mere 200,000 people turning out to show respect for the late Queen, out of a population of 5.4 million is an indication of lack of interest or, in probably your case, loathing is indeed puerile.

The population of England is 56 million and over 60% are for the Monarchy. Do you seriously think if over 34 million aren’t there waving flags it indicates the Queen wasn’t held in high regard?

The people of Scotland only had a small opportunity to show their respects and they did the Queen proud. You and your nationalist pals must be pretty downbeat about that.

I can't believe that I knew so little about monarchy. precedents. councillors of state etc until now. Never even thought about it because the Queen was just sort of there and doing a grand job. if that makes sense.?

I'm thinking about all the panoply of councillors, heralds, traditional offices etc. which we've been seeing and people have been critquing (not just here), and wondering if they are doing any positive harm to the country?

Are they holding us back from some sort of prosperous egalitarian future or are they a harmless link with traditional practice (and before anyone pulls me up, I know that some of our rituals are not in the least bit ancient and traditional)

The monarchy may be the apex of our class system, but we've had plenty of opportunity to alter our 'system' through our votes for Parliament, which comprises our elected representatives. Is it lack of will, or cowardice, which has merely tinkered at the edges?

I don't think Charles has a free hand in selecting counsellors of state. I understood that by default it's always the next 4 adults in line of succession unless parliament were to pass a motion to change it. That means William, Harry, Andrew and Beatrice. Oh and I think the monarch's spouse gets a look in too.
