News Coverage re: Queen funeral

This morning I clicked on the TV, and it was showing live coverage of the Queen's coffin being escorted to a church in Scotland. I watched for a few moments before realizing I was watching an American channel (I guess my DH was watching football yesterday).

Anyway, I clicked over to my usual BC news station to catch the first 10 minutes of morning news, and nary a word was mentioned about anything Royal... we have forest fires, local elections, etc.

Today when I had a moment at work, I clicked on the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corp, similar to BBC) website, and the only news was a small side-bar with no photo, stating "King Charles and siblings escort Queen's coffin in Edinburgh".

I notice ABC Australia has large headlines and photos, American websites (CNN, Fox, NBC) all have coverage as a major headline with photos.

I find it strange that since we are Commonwealth and she was our Head of State that we are getting very little news coverage, especially by a news site that is funded by the government!

It sounds to me like BBC is showing nothing else and not reporting on other world news. I heard some grumbling on Mumsnet about too much coverage.

Are you interested in all the minute details, and do you think you are getting either too much or not enough coverage?

I see that Zara Tindall, Beatrice, Eugenie, Lady Louise and Viscount Severn (the Wessex children) plus William, Harry and Peter Phillips are all going to take part in a Vigil for their grandmother.

Nice to see all the older GC involved, not just the males.

MaizieD. Don't think the tradition is gone. Anyone with a bit of good upbringing and education would know this. My GCs certainly would.

I wish that woman had used the KJV for the reading, much better. It didn’t sound like the NIV,either but I could be wrong. Is she the boss lady? I had never seen or heard of her before.

She's the First Minister of Scotland, nanna8

Don't worry, I doubt many in the UK have heard of Daniel Andrews ?

I too found the whooping and cheering disrespectful, and unnerving. Yesterday for our village it was the funeral of a young woman who was killed 3 weeks ago in a motor accident. As the hearse went passed our house I'm p!eased to say that my D.H whipped off his cap and we both stood in respectful silence As she went by.

"That woman" is Nicola Sturgeon. I'm sure you have heard of her. wink

She's the boss lady ?

I think the whooping and cheering is meant to be respectful. People don't actually know how to react to a funeral cortege these days, but feel that they must acknowledge it in some way. Silence is not a usual part of our lives these days and, ironically, I suspect that they might see silence as being disrespectful.

When we were young people in the street would stop as a mark of respect when a funeral went past; men would take off their hats... This tradition no longer exists and we don't have an adequate substitute for it.

The media coverage has been excellent and is different channel to channel. I watch some, especially the ceremonies and also at mealtimes but I use the switch-off button at other times. Then I get busy working in the garden or out on a cycle ride or going to the local shops. Freedom of choice and availability for workers to see events that they might miss

The flowers are wonderful, such an obvious expression of love and being composted is good, earth to earth

Ive always liked princess Anne. Anyone who tells the media to "naff off" when they become too intrusive is ok in my book.

She strikes me as a very practical woman who just gets on with things rather than sinking into a morass of grief. In that respect she is much like her father.

Georgesgran Wed 14-Sep-22 00:53:05

I’ve definitely seen a different side to Princess Anne. I think while she’s ‘hard working for a Royal’ she’s quite hard, formal, no nonsense and looks quite unfriendly. At the moment all I see is a daughter, bereft at the loss of her mother.

Caleo Wed 14-Sep-22 00:46:55

Isn't Princess Anne good at doing the right thing! She is the image of her grandfather King George.

Zoejory Tue 13-Sep-22 21:46:55

I was somewhat surprised with the whooping and cheering. I also heard a loud bang as the car approached the palace, but it was obviously nothing.

If you want to relax in front of the TV, BB I recommend Sky Arts which seems to be funeral free.

Deedaa Tue 13-Sep-22 20:29:01

DS couldn't be less interested in the monarchy but even he was surprised by all the clapping and yelling when the hearse arrived at the Palace. He was also feeling very sorry for Anne, which again is unlike him.

BlueBelle Tue 13-Sep-22 20:18:48

Oh varian you know nothing about me I have plenty to do I ve been at work till mid afternoon and why shouldn’t I relax with tv or radio
They could have devoted one or two channels 24 hours just not every channel

The late Queen arrives at Buckingham Palace, police outriders pause with heads bowed in respect.

Outside are crowds clapping, cheering, whooping, whistling as if at a football match, phones flashing.

Is it because I'm getting old that I find it disrespectful?

Fleurpepper Tue 13-Sep-22 20:07:53

Whistling, shouting - just so so wrong!

Fleurpepper Tue 13-Sep-22 19:53:24

Just hate all the filming with phones. I find it truly disrespectful.
