Just to keep us all up to date with what is happening.

Kwartang is refusing to publish the Economic forecast by an independent body ahead of Friday’s mini-budget.

Does that mean it is too dire?

Yes, I have read the thread.

Cornelius ?

I would prefer to hear the views of the current Cuadrilla management, not the founder who is no longer involved.

Guess which person the Grauniad quoted?

It isn’t going to happen. Guaranteed 100%

Drilling needs to begin. We are way behind now. If it is viable then Cuadrilla will make it work. If not, they won’t. But we need to find out.

You haven’t read the thread have you??

Cuadrilla share price has doubled in the past month. I’d love to see a list of British share holders.

Rees-Mogg being severely criticised by Tory backbenchers over fracking - the government has NO MANDATE.

Ed Miliband totally on top of his brief, making Mogg look like an idiot. Mogg doesn’t appear to know what he is talking about?

GPs have to see patients within 2 weeks…..so says Therese Coffey. Perhaps someone should remind her that under the last labour government it was 48 hours…..

It’s so reassuring to know Therese Coffey has solved the GP crisis in one fell swoop. Nothing like a target to overturn years of neglect of the NHS.

MaizieD Thu 22-Sept-22 09:07:04

I did say it was the charitable explanation, Wwmk2 ?

Re doctors appointments, when I was young (and, indeed, until very recently) the expectation was to see the doctor the same day.

“Incidentally, has anyone else seen the clip of our Chancellor taking an amusing phone call during the Queen's funeral service? “

I’ve re-watched that footage. Kwartang was definitely not taking a phone call. His behaviour was bizarre to say the very least. He is the chancellor for gods sake!

Apparently worries about the government re-starting fracking can be put to one side.

Chris Cornelius a geologist and founder of Cuadrilla a fracking company, has said it is all just a political decision “they had to be seen to be doing something” just soundbites.

Cornelius said that fracking simply won’t work in the U.K.

Well that’s one thing less to worry about.

My DS whose first degree was in geology, was saying much the same thing when we were talking about it on the phone a couple of days ago.

Good news!?

vegansrock Thu 22-Sept-22 06:44:36

Improvement of animal welfare was sold as a benefit of Brexit” wasn’t it? Makes me hate this government even more.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 22-Sept-22 06:42:09

THEY HAVE NO MANDATE TO INFLICT SUCH CRUELTY

Whitewavemark2 Thu 22-Sept-22 06:36:31

So todays news is

The government is considering lifting the ban on live animal exports.

Lifting the ban on importation of foie gras

Lifting the ban on the importation of animal furs.

Lifting the ban on the importation of hunting trophies like dead lions etc.

Apparently the bans are too “socialist”. Since when has the ban on cruelty to sentient beings become too socialist!

I see Biden has totally rejected Truss’s economics.

He scorned the idea of “trickle down economics” saying something that most of us know.

It has never ever worked, and he is sick and tired of this approach.

It is a dead horse that the Tories keep flogging because it allows their wealthy friends to get even richer.

Biden is a president for the whole of USA

Truss is the PM for a small minority.

Biden is a very poorly man who needs help. The White House have had to back track on several of his recent statements.

Now suddenly he’s Einstein. Very predictable on GN!! ???‍♀️

? well Biden and the IMF and the UN and the majority of economists.

vegansrock Wed 21-Sept-22 18:06:17

It’s strange that Germany, the most successful economy in Europe has a windfall tax, has nationalised its main energy provider , has fixed bus and train fares and rents, yet these are considered loony left ideas by Truss and her supporters which would somehow threaten the U.K. economy.

The company that Germany have renationalised owns Ratcliffe power station. I just assumed it was British owned. I thought one of the arguments about being in the EU was that countries in it couldn’t nationalise things?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 21-Sept-22 13:56:57

Germany and France have now nationalised their gas industry.

maddyone Wed 21-Sept-22 13:52:57

I don’t know. Perhaps we should just wait till Friday.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 21-Sept-22 13:47:20

So businesses will get 50% relief on half of the predicted levels for 6 months. Businesses are still going to struggle and there will undoubtedly be bankruptcies.

The bill for this together with the domestic energy is reckoned to be £150bn. The highest in Europe.

If Truss had capped the energy price similar to countries in Europe the bill would have been far less.

We also have to add in the cost of cutting tax, which is reckoned to be at least a further £30bn.

The UKs debt is now higher than its GDP.

Nothing has yet been said as to how Truss intends to fund this enormous rise.

biglouis Wed 21-Sept-22 12:50:05

Well us pensioners are getting a 10% rise next April annsixty that should keep the wolf from the door for one faction of society

Apparently some of the (striking) unions have whinged that this 10% is a "slap in the face" for working age people. Well my take on that is that this group are still in the process of making their contribution to the community, whereas people above state pension age have already MADE theirs. Their thanks is to recieve some of the lowest pensions in Europe and many pensioners are not fit enough to top up their income by taking a job or continuing to work.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 21-Sept-22 12:39:09

Still waiting for my pension!

Urmstongran Wed 21-Sept-22 12:34:34

They haven't made up for where they didn't pay it, have they?
You are swallowing their propaganda, as you always do. We will not get as much as we would have done if they had kept their manifesto promise. They have not stopped favouring their friends.

Well, not as much as wasn’t paid to me (and other WASPI women!) DaisyAnne when Cleggie put our pensions back all those years. It was supposed to be phased in more gradually but he put extra wheels on that bus.

By my reckoning I’ve ‘lost’ £36k at least, waiting all those extra years for my SP. I think someone worked out if we WASPI’s live to be 80y with our ‘enhanced’ SP payments then we’ll break even. Hey ho.
