What do we think of Kwarteng’s statement?

Sweetpeasue Fri 23-Sept-22 19:56:31

vegansrock I never thought for a second you did!
Obvious to me unless previous posts are read its difficult to get the gist of a
poster's intended meaning. Or I'm just not capable of putting over what I mean. In which case I'd be better staying off the political thread and leave it to the ones who generally come here.
I'm out.

It’s nice to have you join in SweetpeaSue.
Your points are quite valid. And sensible.
?

Sweetpeasue Fri 23-Sept-22 20:13:16

That's kind of you Urmstongran. Appreciated. I shouldn't have posted. Not in good state. I was just incensed about the new tax rate.

Urmstongran Fri 23-Sept-22 20:16:09

Understandable.
Anyway your (continued, hopefully!) input is welcome. Even if we on here disagree, that’s fine. I think it helps me to gain some insight.

Can see there's a hole in this argument as a poorer person doesn't HAVE to spend it. They're capable as anyone else to save.
I agree with the general principle.

Are you suggesting they starve in order to save? Why do you think they have any "extra" money when we know many can afford to eat properly?

The rich get richer……..?

Yes. I recommend listening to "Any Questions" R4 on catch up or tomorrow.

Indeed- let them eat cake type of comment. Not got a clue!

Very few people starve in the western world.
Watch out for the bleeding hearts on these threads SweetpeaSue.

If this was a mini budget ...

Best if I don't reply, as I would be struck off from EF.

The word I am thinking about begins with 'B'- for sure!

CoolCoco

If a poor person gets another £1k they would spend it thus boosting the economy, if a rich person is given extra £1k it will just add to their bank balance, they wouldn't necessarily spend it. Has 'levelling up" been forgotten now? Is it now just "trickle down"?

£1K for a poor person would be spent on food, heating bills, maybe new shoes for the children. It doesn't go far and win;t really be boosting the economy.

A poor person is probably going to have to play catch up and so will spend it on basic needs.

Do you remember how, after the war many ordinary German people could not accept what their government had done. The allies marched them through the death camps to show them the bodies, the dying and the indignity. I just wonder, if after we are rid of this government ... ... ...

Obviously not but the ignorance of some people to the lives of others is stunning.

Grandalf1 Fri 23-Sept-22 21:21:45

Given a decade or more of Tory government culminating in the Clown followed by the Smirk, don't be surprised by the latest onslaught on the poorest and the slightly better off. It's Toryism writ large.

Urmstongran Fri 23-Sept-22 21:41:25

Oh do me a favour DaisyAnne.
SweetpeaSue has lived through her poverty which is why I cheered her on from the sidelines. Others on here only read about it. Big difference.

Sweetpeasue Fri 23-Sept-22 21:44:54

OMG What IS wrong with you people. I'm havi g a breakdown here! Just stupidly read this. Will never come on here again. Thank you Urms. I can't believe this.

Sweetpeasue Fri 23-Sept-22 21:47:03

So sorry I tried to quote Daisy Anne.
I shouldn't be on here tonight. I'm all over the place. Why do I care about what people think of me so much! I'm a wreck.

DaisyAnne Fri 23-Sept-22 21:47:46

I'm still trying to get my head round them attacking those on benefit because they are not working full time. It's the government's fault the childcare doesn't work and is becoming less and less available. It's the government's fault that there are not enough carers, and the care system doesn't work. These are two reasons why parents and carers have to work part-time.

Perhaps read this article in the Guardian

If you are poor, it’s time to ask yourself: have you thought of simply being rich?

Marina Hyde

Simple hey Marie-Antoinette!

Sweetpeasue Fri 23-Sept-22 21:51:09

There are so many sides to these arguments and I'm glad they're discussed. But nothing is black and white. I wish everyone would understand. I'm not capable obviously. Not intelligent not anythi g

I'm sorry Sweetpeasue. I certainly didn't intend to add to your difficulties. However, I think many of us are aware of Urnstongran's views.

Sweetpeasue Fri 23-Sept-22 21:53:57

So you can afford The Gaurdian.! Good luck to you. I used to have to read it too for A level at college. Very interesting articles. I'm a Labour person. Can't afford to read that though.

Please don’t worry about it Sweetpeasue, it’s not personal, and don’t be put off Gransnet because your post was misinterpreted. We don’t all agree with each other, but some of the replies were harsher than necessary.

Sweetpeasue Fri 23-Sept-22 21:55:11

I haven't a clue what I'm writing here. Not drunk just obviously very fraught and stupid
