I certainly wouldn’t want him in a hospital bed next to me, or in a changing room next to me.

Why not? What do you think they are likely to do?

What’s that got to do with anything LizzieDrip?
She wouldn’t like it and if it was supposed to be a female ward or changing area, it’s wrong. That’s the only justification necessary.
Are you saying we should allow things that are wrong? Who gets to choose which wrong things are allowed?
You?
Males?
Females?

The likelihood is that EI would do nothing, except perhaps parade his 'girlself' in an aggressive manner, as he did with the teenagers in the Ladies. That's absolutely not the point, though.

When women are vulnerable (and it's hard to think of a time when we are more so than in a hospital bed - undressed, ill, scared, maybe wounded or with a drip attached) we need to feel safe. Having a strange* man in the next bed is not likely to encourage feelings of safety. Also, whereas EI might pose no actual threat, there are many men who would, and as we keep saying, when one is allowed in, they all are, and we have no safe spaces.

*strange as in 'unknown'

How do you feel about being cared for / treated by a male nurse? You have no idea if this male nurse identifies as a woman when not at work. Would this be acceptable to you?

FarNorth Sat 29-Oct-22 13:18:14

A male nurse presenting as a male nurse is fine with me, although some women may have good reason to want only female nursing staff.

A male person pretending to be a female nurse is not fine, especially if dealing with a female patient who has been assured of female staff.

LizzieDrip Sat 29-Oct-22 13:29:17

Fair enough FarNorth. Would you still feel the same if you saw that same nurse dressed as a woman outside work?

FarNorth Sat 29-Oct-22 14:42:36

I'd see him being a man dressed as he chose in his own time.
If I became aware that he actually claimed to be a woman, or in girl/woman mode, my opinion of him would go down.
I'd still have no issue with his work, if he didn't claim to be a female nurse.

FarNorth Sat 29-Oct-22 14:51:17

Here is a real-life example.
My interpretation is that Jon deliberately confused the female patient with his use of the phrase 'Trans Female' and that she didn't understand what she was agreeing to.

If it was unavoidable that the patient have care from Jon he should have been honest with her.

If the male nurse appears as a male nurse, how am I supposed to know what he does after work?
He’s not pretending to be something he isn’t in work.
If he wants to pretend he’s a woman outside work, what would you like me to do?
If he claims to be female in work, that’s a different issue. It means he’s not to be trusted with my health issues or anything else.
If you lie about one thing how can you be trusted about another?

Mollygo Sat 29-Oct-22 15:15:39

FarNorth, that is a perfect example of the duplicity practised by certain males.
The fact that he used language like that unsurprisingly shows how little respect he has for females, just his pleasure in having ‘got away with it.’

Does a man have to 'do' anything, isn't a woman allowed to want the privacy and dignity afforded by being in a single sex space? Do you disagree with single sex hospital wards? I wonder why you would allow men on women's wards, and is that all men or only special ones?

FarNorth My interpretation is that Jon deliberately confused the female patient with his use of the phrase 'Trans Female' and that she didn't understand what she was agreeing to. I agree, why use the term 'female'? Jon knows he's a biological male. He can never be female, it was a deliberate deception, the patient was not receiving care from a female. Putting a dress on does not change your sex.

Crikey! Transphobia is alive and well on GNsad

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Oct-22 15:36:56

No, it's reality, LizzieDrip.
Disingenuity is alive and well in some posts.

RoleenCooney Sat 29-Oct-22 15:46:03

Lizziedrip I suffered appalling physical, sexual and emotional abuse during my marriage and cannot bear having a man touch me now and so I always ask for a female doctor or nurse. So the physical and mental scars I have from that make me transphobic does it? How dare you!

Rosie51 Sat 29-Oct-22 16:21:29

What is transphobic about the truth there are two sexes and nobody can change from one to the other?
I note you choose not to answer any questions.
Jon describing himself as a 'trans female' instead of a transwoman was deliberate. The patient had requested a female nurse, the patient did not get a female nurse.

Only from you LizzieDrip. Most non-transphobic posters on GN simply say that men can call themselves whatever they like, or dress however they like.
They simply don’t agree that men can be or should claim to be female as that is lying. Neither should they use those lies or pretences to access female safe spaces.

Apparently you think it’s OK for men to lie and fraudulently present themselves as females.

LizzieDrip Sat 29-Oct-22 16:57:28

I note you choose not to answer any questions.

Correct. I have chosen to step away from the discussion as it is becoming too personal.

RoleenCooney Sat 29-Oct-22 17:06:13

Stepping away now you've cast your slurs and accusations of transphobia? It became too personal when you gave your decree against people that you knew nothing about and had no idea why they feel as they do.

FarNorth Sat 29-Oct-22 17:08:48

Oh well, we'll just have to wonder what your answers might have been.

FarNorth Sat 29-Oct-22 17:11:33

You're right RoleenCooney, that is what LizzieDrip did, rather than engage sensibly.

I would be happy to be treated by a male nurse - of course I would. What he did outside of work is none of my business, so of course it would be 'acceptable'.

I'm not sure I understand the question - is it some sort of test?

Can you point to an example of what you are calling transphobia please? It is impossible to discuss things like this when vague accusations are all we have to go on.

Doodledog Sat 29-Oct-22 17:17:18

Oh. Another flounce as I was working my way through the posts. What's new, eh?

Galaxy Sat 29-Oct-22 17:19:15

Well if we are making accusations I find the phrase dressed as a woman deeply deeply sexist. I guess sexism is alive and well on GN.
