Beware what you wish for. Sky News says that the one name that is cming up again and again, when discussing the assassination of Truss and her instant replacement is:

Boris Johnson

Probably because another woman is claiming to have had an affair with him

He’s doing another speech in America today? What do his constituents think of it? Do the ever see him?

growstuff Tue 18-Oct-22 19:17:03

Well, if you fancy a bet, the bookies are offering ODDS ON at 4/7 that Truss is NOT the Conservative Leader by the next General Election!

But she will not lead them out of the next election. Most of them will disappear without trace.

Let’s hope you’re right Monica - I can’t imagine Liz Truss having much of a future on the after dinner speaker circuit. I suspect Boris Johnson will always be in the public eye though for one reason or another.

I'm all in favour of Truss leading the Tories into the next election.

According to the latest opinion poll that would leave the Tories with only one MP.

It would be the unelectable led by the incompetent.

It already is!

Oh I do hope she will. Then there might be a huge Labour majority.

I have just been catching up on the Politics live programme on iplayer and there were commentators on there regarding Hunt as a safe pair of hands. These views, repeated often enough, sink into public consciences and become the accepted viewpoint.
I just don't think that Labour can relax too much, one of Keir Starmer's selling points is as a sensible grown up, very easy against Boris Johnson and now Liz Truss, but not so easy against Jeremy Hunt if the media start rooting for him.
I don't want the Tories to win the next election but Labour should be vigilant and give positive reasons to vote for them, other than they are not the Tories.

I realise I have digressed though, and I don't think Liz Truss will last much longer.

But look at the number of people talking about "a safe pair of hands" or "an adult in the room" I think people will be taken in by Hunt because of his presentation, forgetting that he was not very good at his previous jobs. The same with Penny Mordant, her presentation is good and she also knows how to attack Starmer.
The Labour party cannot take victory at the next election for granted, they need to be more than just not the present Conservatives.

Not many people are talking about a safe pair of hands though, only the desperate Tory faction who have to clutch at any straw, however flimsy.
I have no worries about Starmer’s ability in the skirmishes ahead, even those who dislike him would admit that he’s more than a match for any of the Tory front bench - he’s not a barrister for no reason. He’s also surrounded himself with other very able shadow cabinet members. Yvette Cooper in particular is impressive, I’ve not seen her in a debate where she hasn’t excelled. Labour are positioned very well. I know it’s not what the left of the party would like to see, but it’s the reality.

I doubt that she could lead the conga!

Nothing to discuss. She won't.

However it doesn't really matter! We could have David Attenborough leading the Conservatives in the next GE and they wouldn't win.

It's farewell to Tory governments for a good few years.

I am not so sure about that. I think if the Conservatives install Penny Mordant and Jeremy Hunt as P.M. and chancellor, the mainstream media would get behind them and they would win.

Even if the triple lock is abandoned?

I think Boris Johnson said the same. Don’t hold your breath.

He still might anything seems possible!

Kim19 Tue 18-Oct-22 12:51:20

Please let Jeremy Hunt be temporary.

DaisyAnne Tue 18-Oct-22 12:49:56

YouGov poll has her at -70 in popularity.

According to the Telegraph today most Tory MPs think that Truss should resign. I don't know what she's still doing in post.

I think you are living in cloud cuckoo land if you genuinely think that Ilovecheese. The collective public memory is not that short.

Once Hunt has finished the work he started to destroy the NHS when he was Minister for Health and has imposed swingeing cuts to public services which are already cut to the bone, I can't see many people voting for them.

Luckygirl3 Tue 18-Oct-22 12:44:29

She won't and she knows that - she is lying - it is what politicians do. They think we are daft.

Daisymae Tue 18-Oct-22 12:43:13

No she won't. I'd be surprised if she lasts the week.
