Starmer calling for GE

We need a GE now - and not next summer as it seems the tories might suggest. Just think of how much more damage and hardship they could cause in 9 months.

The war in Ukraine is not really relevant here as others have said. And with a new PM and new cabinet members the next 6 weeks would be just as disruptive under another tory govmnt as with a GE.

Have just discovered that the cake I am baking was due out of the oven ten minutes ago! That’s because of sensational politics taking place and Granset.

I do not see much choice for them, they will have to rally around their next choice for PM or it is plainly extinction for them.
Rishi Sunak seems the obvious choice.

The problem is, is that the Tories are at war. There are so many factions and divisions that they will never get a candidate that they can all rally around, there will always be instability.

I want a Labour government as much as the next Labour voter, but do see it is entirely the wrong time for pushing for an election now.If of course, the Conservative Party cannot come together and act sensibly, then there would be no choice, even though it is the wrong time for an election then there would have to be one.

You’re entitled to your opinion of course Prentice. That war is unpredictable and will potentially go on for years, there’s no good time to hold an election if you subscribe to your view. I think we need a strong and stable government, and if it takes six weeks and a general election to get to that point then we have to go for it. Support for Ukraine is, and will remain top priority regardless.

Unstable situation for the UK, with voters being bombarded with party political statements, dirty tactics and name calling from both sides.We do not need even more uncertainty at this time, when people are worried about possible war in Europe and rising prices.

I disagree Casdon and think that as things are, there most definitely will be a vacuum.
We need a PM in place by next week who has judgement we can trust in the event of Putin escalating the war.I think that would be Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt working in partnership.
In the event of an election there would be far too much time spent in campaigning and not enough on the situation in Ukraine and our economy.

The reason is that there will be long drawn out campaigning for both Parties, this is wrong when Putin is still threatening the West, it could be a dangerous time for a ‘vacuum’ in our government.A fast election done by the MP’s only is what is needed for now.

I don’t follow your argument Prentice. There will still be a government in place in the lead up to a general election, the world won’t stop and there won’t be a vacuum. The parties have pulled together on defence issues all the way through too, it’s a non issue.

I don't think that there's anyone that would be able to unite this party. Inconvenient though it may be the country needs a GE. The alternative is another couple of years if infighting.

Seems to me that the turkeys have been voting for Christmas for the last twelve years.

Interesting have never thought of myself as a turkey lol
I have always voted Conservative but am at a time when I will look at other parties if they show they have a clear alternative and are not likely to win just because the governing party are so bad.

It’s not a strike if there’s an obligation to provide a skeleton service level is it though, that’s a move designed to completely emasculate the unions? You may see that as desirable, but the majority of the working public certainly don’t.

I think he’ll alienate some voters because he’s totally backing the powerful unions. Truss at least wanted to pass legislation ensuring skeleton services were available during strike action, as they do in Europe.

Anyway the Tories are in such disarray it’s just a matter of how long now for Starmer.
