Who?

HurdyGurdy Fri 21-Oct-22 12:37:06

Not that it is likely, but what would happen if no one came forward to run for party leader?

The 1922 wouldn’t let her call a GE even if she wanted to.

I hope we get Mourdant or Braverman and the new cabinet doesn’t include Shapps.

The '22 would have no say in a Prime Minister calling a General Election UG.

Sorry GG13 for some reason I can't quote today

You have to have 100 nominations to stand. If only one person gets 100 nominations or more, they automatically win.

Ok, that was not how it was explained in the news.

They said over and over again that there would only be a coronation if a candidate received 150 of 357 possible votes.

Obviously confusion abounds.

I don’t think it’s confusion, if one person got 100 votes out of 357, then at least one other person would get over 100 as well so there would be a contest. There’s a tipping point, so 2 people could get 99 votes each, and the other could get 159, in which case it would be uncontested after round 1. Does that make more sense?

Zoejory Fri 21-Oct-22 12:30:42

Wouldn't electing Boris Johnson possibly be the push needed for a GE?

There are many Conservative MPs who would be horrified and it could see loads of resignations or movement to other parties.

What worries me is the nearly 180,000 Tory members voting yet again. Their general dependency to select well and thoughtfully is now based on their overwhelming endorsement of Truss!!!Have a dread they might decide “loveable, funny, clever, badly treated Johnson “ would be a good idea. Also, some cry “he gave us this great mandate”. No mention of Corbyn who gave him an open goal.

Graham Brady, in a snatch of interview I heard yesterday, said the the membership 'would be consulted'. I took that as meaning that they wouldn't have a deciding vote. And we all know that the results of 'consultations' can be ignored...

Mr Maizie thinks that, if Johnson, Sunak & Mourdant are the main contenders, when it came to the final two, assuming that it's Johnson and either Sunak or Mourdant, the supporters of the one that was eliminated would get behind the other one, rather than Johnson. hmm

I do hope Mr Maizie is right Maizie.

In answer to the OP, I am just sitting by the phone waiting to be told it's my turn next. If it's in alphabetical order it should be me before DH or DS anyway.

The thought of Boris Johnson being allowed back when he has been found to be a liar and incapable of following the rules he made for the rest of us is appalling. Sadly, not unbelievable though...

mokryna Fri 21-Oct-22 12:00:04

I know and I was going to do it in the New Year.

LauraNorderr Fri 21-Oct-22 11:04:30

One can’t just sign up and get a vote. To vote, one has to have been a member for a minimum of three months.

^Conservative Party Members have begun to receive their emails with a personalised voting code.^
I think that is quite some achievement in such a short time - technology wise - in terms of the necessary security to make it absolutely watertight online. ?

But who are these people?
I was thinking of joining but had put it back to the New Year, too late now, things have move faster than I thought.
On a radio 4 program this morning someone enrolled fictitious people and they were accepted onto this unique list, it is not throughly checked

If one of the candidates gets 100 nominations and all the rest get less than 100 each, the person with 100 is the new PM.

That was not how it was explained on the news earlier volver

In your scenario the top two would go in to a head-to-head and be put to the Party Members.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 21-Oct-22 10:36:11

MaizieD if one of the three candidates receives more than 150 nominations by 3pm on Monday, there will not be any more rounds or the need to go to the Party Members.

The recipient of those votes will become PM immediately.

Oh they love him over there. He should move there. They’re welcome to him!

Fingers crossed that Mr Maizie is right.

I don’t do Twitter but it’s been reported in the latest news straplines that the official Ukraine Twitter account had a meme up “Better Call Boris” (instead of ‘Saul’ but with the same graphics recognisable to fans of that show).

It has since been taken down!

“Well-placed sources said that Mr Johnson would not be returning until Saturday morning on a scheduled British Airways flight that takes off Friday at 6pm local time and travels through the night with a stop en route in Antigua. The aircraft is due to land at Gatwick Airport at 9.30am on Saturday.”

- The Telegraph, today.

Grantanow Fri 21-Oct-22 10:08:30

The Privileges Committee stuff is irrelevant. If the Tories re-elect Johnson they would use their majority to vote down any negative report, otherwise they would face choosing another PM or be in serious trouble with their party members.

growstuff Fri 21-Oct-22 10:05:37

Blossoming

Are people really willing to re-elect the only British prime minister to be found guilty of a criminal offence while still in office? He is a pathological liar and his sole agenda is the glorification of Boris Johnson.

In a word - yes.

Grantanow Fri 21-Oct-22 10:05:20

If the result of the Tory MPs' vote is 1 Sunak 2 Johnson then Johnson would refuse to stand aside for Sunak, thus triggering a Tory party members' vote which Johnson would likely win. If it's 1 Johnson 2 Sunak I wonder if Sunak would stand aside?
