He’s got a lot on his plate right now. He’s definitely doing things differently to Boris. “Focusing on domestic issues”.

I don't think Charles has any choice about going or not going, I think that now he's King he can only go on official business when approved (informally?) by the PM?

But this daft little soiree at Buckingham Palace is just that - daft. Whoever came up with the idea is trying to create the belief that we are still important in the world and that a meeting of 200 (so far un-named) people is worthwhile. I don't usually use this term, but its "greenwashing".

I wonder what they PM's few words will be? Off you go suckers, take a fan with you cos its going to get hot and we don't care?

I'm seeing hints on twitter this morning that Sunak is now saying that he might find a spare half hour to pop along to the conference...

Has anyone else heard this?

volver Mon 31-Oct-22 09:19:33

Yes, I saw it too MaizieD.

Don't know how he could do it without looking weak. I heard that they might say the financial stuff has moved on really quickly, so he has time to go to Egypt now. 🤦🏼‍♀️

I se the King's move as putting pressure on our new PM?

I see also in that report, Greta Thunberg will not be attending but is calling this conference "a scam"

Whitewavemark2 Mon 31-Oct-22 10:36:02

Yes I can see exactly why Thunberg is scathing about the conference.

My issue is how on earth are we going to get the worlds nations to cooperate etc if they don’t have such meetings?

volver Mon 31-Oct-22 10:44:00

I've got no window into Thunberg's mind but I expect she is fed up with people saying they'll do one thing then doing another.

For example, saying that the environment is really important but not taking the time to attend the world's biggest meeting on the subject.

The impatience of youth - and good for her.

Mind you the young have a lot to be impatient about.

I've just been listening to her on the Jeremy Vine show. She giggles like a teenager. 🙂 Especially when Jeremy asks her a daft question.

Not heard anything said in quite that way.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak could still attend the COP27 climate summit if sufficient progress is made on preparations for the autumn Budget, Downing Street has said.

That seems reasonable to me. I bet it does to quite a few who's lives are not only about politics.

Ha! 10 points to Gryffindor!

(In other words, I was right!)

Whitewavemark2 Mon 31-Oct-22 13:08:30

U-turn in sight.

Zoejory Mon 31-Oct-22 13:13:07

Greta's blah blah blah speech and the ditty you can stick your climate crisis up (rude word) was from last year. Long before Rishi was anything but a wannabe.

Alie2Oxon Mon 31-Oct-22 13:29:14

Greta has done a lot of good work worldwide with younger people. The COPs are working with the older and more entrenched in their beliefs...?

Pity she had to say that. The media will always rake up something to divide.

I am not taking sides. Both are doing something!

Do you think the fact that BJ planned to attend had anything to do with Sunak's impending U-Turn?

Oh, Dickens! Why on earth would you think that? 🤣🤣🤣

I think he is following the Johnson Method of leadership. Reactive every time...

Twitter - There’s reports that Keir Starmer has gone into the Cabinet Office. (not verified)

The second one of those is very interesting Dickens.

The second one of those is very interesting Dickens.

It looks like those on the Right of the party are "deeply unhappy" (media speak) with his Cabinet reshuffle, and the fact that with Johnson and Mordaunt withdrawing from the leadership race - there was no vote for Sunak.

So, more letters asking for a vote of 'no confidence' to the 1922 Committee it seems.

Goodness knows what effect this will have on the markets, and thus the economy.

David Maddox, political editor of the Express says, "Below the Cabinet, the reshuffle was more akin to Nightmare on Elm Street than Downing Street with a clear out of Brexiteers, the 2019 intake and many from the Tory right."

Whether this is a minority of members creating a storm in a teacup, who knows.

And why did Starmer go into the Cabinet office? If the report is true.
