Asylum seekers

Just read the following.

To claim asylum in the UK, a person must be IN the UK

It is not possible to apply from outside the country, and there is no asylum visa to enable people to travel to the UK legally to apply for asylum.”

Can this be right?

Did anyone see BBC news last night ? One of the immigrants complains about standards in the holding place, then says I can't even phone my family! Ummm if he's running from a war torn country, why oh why has he left his family behind? Think BBC slipped up Lol

It’s not just fascism it’s any kind of authoritarian regime, try getting far in a communist country without an ID, it makes no difference to me I always carry a photo ID now

www.liberties.eu, a link I found through a conservative website, has an article explaining why people use dinghy boats rather than airlines. Eu legislation passed 2019 has had its own consequences.

Who's saying anything about being required to prove ID at all times and in all places? That will only happen if the law is changed to allow it. And, yes, I agree that there are some people who would turn a blind eye - or even approve of - fascism. That's what did happen in 1930s Germany. It was people who allowed fascism - not having ID.

Fascism takes hold because people vote for fascists as a result of a flawed democratic process or because fascists use force - not because of ID cards.

Fascism is clearly a natural tendency if Gnet posters are anything to go by...

It takes hold when fellow humans are characterised as 'illegals' and when people tell you that if you haven't done anything wrong you've nothing to fear.

Of vourse it's absolutely fine to be required to prove your identity at all times and in all places...

It won’t make much difference to identity because those that don’t want to be honest will just say they’ve lost the card and waste police time.
Those of us that are honest will carry identity, driving licence or other document for their own convenience, if the ID deniers want to align themselves with the dishonest, that’s their problem.

That is a mind boggling assumption, Katie59.

It makes it perfectly understandable how fascism takes hold, though...

Maudi Sun 06-Nov-22 07:55:11

I can't see a problem with identity cards why would there be if you have nothing to hide. Probably only a problem if you are an illegal.

This is how it starts. "You don't have id? You must be dishonest then"

As I've said on the other thread, don't say we didn't warn you.

And you want to make it easier for them?

vegansrock Sun 06-Nov-22 07:17:38

Volver “they” could do all sorts of things we don’t like in all sorts of ways, I’ve no trust in this government or their motivations and the sooner we are shot of them the better. They are already trying to curb strikes and demos or hadn’t you noticed?

volver Sun 06-Nov-22 07:06:06

Seriously, did you just say that? 😮

I'm gobsmacked.

"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" is one of the most ridiculous statements ever. What if they make going on demos the thing you have to hide! Or being Scottish? Or having been abroad recently? Who decides what is "not allowed" any more?

People like Braverman?

Be careful what you wish for.

Eventually Biometrics will be the way to go and not before time. People may think it's un-British to have ID Cards etc but it's virtually the only way to reduce fraud.
The sooner we bring it in the better - if you are who you say you are then you won't have an issue with it. If you're not -well look out!!

"If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear."
Goebbels.

That ended well.

But it was the Nazi regime which caused the horrors, not ID cards. Germans have to carry ID cards now, but doesn't have a Nazi dictatorship.

I really don't want an "ID card" thread
grin
So I'll just say it on here that I'm with volver on this one!
No cards please!

I'll join you in the dissident's vorner.

Although my daughter is now in her late thirties, she used to be asked for ID for her age until she was middle thirties. Admittedly she’s always looked young for her age.

growstuff Sat 05-Nov-22 22:39:05

Too late! We've got one.

Although I've stated I'm not against the, I'm not bothered either way. However, I wonder if some kind of scheme for people who don't have a driving licence or passport would be useful. A few years ago, my council (don't know about all) used to issue teenagers with an ID card to prove their ages for child fares on buses and then, when they were older, to get into cinemas, buy alcohol and cigarettes, etc.

The BBC's Ros Atkins on Albanians:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-latin-america-63520784

Interesting that the vast majority of males have no interest in staying long-term and don't even apply for asylum.

Fleurpepper Sat 05-Nov-22 20:45:49

I agree re ID cards. Hard to see why not. Of course they could be forged and sold but I'm sure a way could be found to beat that.

In many countries they are biometric (finger prints or face recognition) which makes them much harder to forge.

volver Sat 05-Nov-22 20:37:13

I always watch it! I'm a softy really!

That Argentine Tango 😍

Aveline Sat 05-Nov-22 20:28:14

volver? Watching Strictly?! Blimey.

maddyone Sat 05-Nov-22 20:24:28

Ahh volver’s watching Strictly. I’ll look for the thread after I’ve talked to my very important little people.
