The UN is rotting from within.

M0nica Sat 12-Nov-22 08:53:29

The UN has always been rotten. In an attempt to be, that fashionable term, 'inclusive', it has ignored the appalling human rights records of so many countries, even, as in this case, putting them on committees that are meant to uphold human rights against attack, when they are attacking them in their own country.

Namsnanny Sat 12-Nov-22 11:16:37

Why pay into such an organisation?
Wondered about this for so many years.

FarNorth Sat 12-Nov-22 11:57:45

I just came to see if anyone had posted about this.
It's horrific.

The UN needs a set of metaphorical balls and a back bone.

Fleurpepper Sat 12-Nov-22 12:00:18

This is just so appalling and beyond dreadful. How can we allow them asylum before it is too late?

Smileless2012 Sat 12-Nov-22 12:01:41

They wouldn't be able to leave Fleur.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 12-Nov-22 12:02:47

I feel so totally helpless, I shall write to my MP but I guess government has other things on its mind …

Grantanow Sat 12-Nov-22 12:23:25

The UN needs total reform. Countries with rotten records should be excluded until they meet acceptable criteria. No non-democratic countries to be admitted.

nanna8 Sat 12-Nov-22 12:26:36

The UN needs to be disbanded. Any country subscribing to that decision should be absolutely ashamed.

TerriBull Sat 12-Nov-22 12:42:43

How appalling! I remember reading about Saudi Arabia's mass executions, where some of those murdered were young people still in their teens involved in demonstrations, just kids really!

My neighbour where I previously lived, was Iranian the family left after Ayatollah Khomeini came to power, she returned to Iran after many years, understandably she missed her homeland. However I remember having a conversation with her many years ago, when she said something along the lines of "it's ok there now we can get Dolce and Gabbana and other designer labels", me "but they still have executions, public ones, people dangling off the end of cranes" she just wasn't phased by that. All the designer labels in the world, so unimportant anyway in the great scheme of things, can never separate that country's government from the punitive medieval horrors they inflict on their people, especially the women.

We can only hope, given they have a very young population, that they will eventually rise up in great numbers and over throw their theocracy and replace it with a more tolerant regime where they can enjoy the freedoms which we and other western democracies take for granted.

Glorianny Sat 12-Nov-22 12:46:56

Of course it's dreadful. But Iran is not the only country with huge numbers of executions. The Saudis for instance executed 122 in the first six months of 2022. And they get royal receptions. Women's rights are not supported in either of these countries. Although Iran has some interesting women's achievements. In 2014, the Iranian mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani became the first female Fields Medallist. The medal is awarded every 4 years to mathematicians under 40.

Fleurpepper they won't be permitted to leave Iran, and even if they escaped they would have concerns for their family.

Before anyone comments I am not excusing the level of oppression in Iran but I do think we should acknowledge there are other countries which are just as bad but which are accepted by the West (possibly because of their oil???)

dogsmother Sat 12-Nov-22 13:20:08

It is horrifying put simply. Horrifying. I agree the UN needs to respond.

nadateturbe Sat 12-Nov-22 13:26:37

This is too shocking for words. Something must be done.

eazybee Sat 12-Nov-22 14:15:12

Perhaps we could start by refusing to be so complaisant with the diktats issued in this country to schools and workplaces about the clothing Iranian, and women of other races, are supposed to wear. They are not religious requirements, and far too much credence has been given to these demands.

HettyBetty Sat 12-Nov-22 14:54:41

Done in the name of religion. Hmmm.

HettyBetty Sat 12-Nov-22 16:43:10

Any thoughts on the England football team playing Iran in the World Cup? I know what my thoughts are, would be interested to hear others.

Horrifying, absolutely, it needs major countries to act with such powerful sanctions as possible - what could work?

I'm not quite sure why after the OP appeared above, an attack was then mounted by posters on the UN, since its Iran the culprits, ....even in an ideal world take too long to respond as they have discussion/agreement processes: yes the UN is far from perfect, but have some forgotten why it was set up at the end of WW2 and the chaos before...

unless people are suggesting the UN ought to send troops in?

I love football and watch loads, and would normally be glued to a tournament like the World Cup. I know it won't make one iota of difference but I won't watch one single second. I don't think the England team, or indeed any team should be in Qatar in the first place.

It shouldn’t be in Qatar, I am not watching this World Cup.

Iran shouldn’t be there.

HettyBetty Sat 12-Nov-22 17:24:29

Rosie51, GrannyGravy13 I agree, it being in Qatar is horrific enough without the added Iranian angle.

Wyllow3 Sat 12-Nov-22 17:30:18

We should offer them asylum. Iran might take this easier way out. Its very short term-ist as only regime change there will solve it...but...

HettyBetty Sat 12-Nov-22 17:48:49

Wyllow3 I doubt very much if they could leave the country.

An Iranian woman I spoke to earlier this week says that the majority of women want to stay there but to be able to live in freedom.

VioletSky Sat 12-Nov-22 18:03:52

Ita absolutely devastating.

I feel so powerless.

Women do not have equality till we all do.

We have nothing when any woman puts her life at risk purely asking for rights for other women.

They should be penalised from any interaction with anyone
