And why are the other Scottish parties going along with it, apart from the Tories?
For that matter, why do all the UK parties support it, apart from the Tories ?
I think that given the reaction to JK Rowling's perfectly reasonable essay, and the way that people like Kathleen Stock and Allison Bailey have been hounded, opposition parties are scared that their messaging will be lost in the inevitable howls of protest if they speak out against the trans lobby.

Scarf in Suffragette colours not allowed in Scottish Parliament.
(1001 Posts)During stage 2 hearings of the GRR Bill in the Scottish Parliament, women are being asked to either remove scarves knitted in Suffragette colours of green, purple and white or leave. At least one woman has chosen to leave. And yet quite a few of the MSPs are wearing Rainbow lanyards.

Actually there is some evidence, I think Canada in particular was the source of some troubling accounts from women particularly in refuges.

NS has turned out to be a big disappointment to most people in Scotland, whether they want independence or not .
She was very much admired during the lockdowns, especially compared to the Johnson shambles, but that's all disappeared.
I don't know, Molly. I can't help wondering if this is one of those situations where we won't find out until it's too late.
We know that the number of transitioners is growing, but we don't know why that is. There is a lot of talk about gender dysphoria, it's all a bit vague. All the same, we do know that according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, gender dysphoria prevalence accounts for 0.005–0.014% of the population for biological males and 0.002–0.003% for biological females. In both Japan and Poland, the prevalence of gender dysphoria is higher in biological females. (source here).
It is estimated by the government that there are somewhere between 200,000 and 500, 000 transpeople in the UK. (Source here), which is a tiny percentage of a population of 67million or so.
That so many legal changes and societal shifts are proposed to cater for such a small number of people, makes little sense to me. There has to be a reason why Building Services departments are being asked to include 'gender neutral' toilets to cater for so few people, why retail and sports facilities managers are expected to make decisions about women's privacy in changing rooms, and why teachers are being trained to deal with a condition (gender dysphoria) that affects so few children, when statistically they are far more likely to come across children with all manner of other conditions, whether physical, mental or psychological. I don't know what it is though, or why there are operations and hormones given on the NHS, particularly when all other areas are suffering from cutbacks.
I wonder when we'll find out what is behind all of this, but I get the feeling that it won't be long, as the tide does seem to be turning.
"There is no evidence" because there is no official wish to record or announce that evidence.
There is huge distress being caused to women prisoners, in those countries, but it is not recorded in any way.
Actual incidents of harm are recorded as involving females only.
Likewise, outwith prison, crimes committed by men identifying as transwomen are being recorded as female crimes - that is happening in the UK too. And I'm sure you've seen the UK newspaper reports of "Woman committed hideous crime......she this.....she that .
Wouldn't it be a good idea to record these things accurately so that claims of 'No Evidence' could be seen as truthful (or not).
To explain fully what the new GRC legislation will mean and why they are requesting change trans people have contributed to this leaflet. 30 countries now have self ID as the recognised process, most of them are not places where women are threatened or trans crime is prevalent.
The scare mongering about what might happen is just that. There is no evidence from any of those countries.

Why is NS doing this?
Some believe she seeks a tangible legacy, which, given the parlous state of Scottish education and NHS, she lacks. Or that, cynically, she would like the Westminster government to strike down her new GRA if it believes it undermines protections under the Equality Act. Then Sturgeon could enjoy a proxy nationalist battle in the Supreme Court: see how the English won’t let us make our own laws!
Last week, ScotGov lawyers argued in court that possession of a GRC means the person's chosen sex is their legal sex in all circumstances.
If the judge rules in their favour, it will be impossible to maintain any genuinely single-sex service or place.
We have to wait a few months for the judge's decision.
Here's the link to the Times article Alison.
It doesn't have a paywall.

Information from the Scottish Government here :
www.parliament.scot/bills-and-laws/bills/gender-recognition-reform-scotland-bill
Brief summary by me :
The Gender Recognition Reform Bill is intended to make it easy for trans people to get a Gender Recognition Certificate.
However that means it will also be easy for any people to get a Gender Recognition Certificate.
The requirements are :
- Make a declaration that you have 'lived as' your chosen sex for 3 months (6 months if you are 16 or 17). Proof can be shown, e.g. change of name on utility bill, change of appearance, but it isn't essential.
- Declare that you intend to 'live as' your chosen sex for the rest of your life.
- Wait 3 months (for reflection).
- Receive Gender Recognition Certificate which entitles you to also change the sex shown on your birth certificate.
Still baffled by this bonkers ruling. Could not follow the explanation on the Twitter link without joining Twitter. As an expatriate Scot in England, I am embarrassed. Somebody please explain concisely or direct me to a news article.
I’d be happy with that so long as it’s not the most modern and expensive prison, with garden variety prisoners left to languish in the horrible old prisons. Not because of wanting horrible conditions for transpeople but because self-iding yourself into a luxury place would be very unfair.
OnwardandUpward
A trans prison, with separate F2M unit and M2F unit seems to be the best way of dealing with trans prisoners.
Absolutely, though I'm not sure how the lack of 'affirmation' is going to go down......

Who would be so cynical as to think that sex offenders wouldn't comply voluntarily with the law of the land? It's not as if they've ever ignored any laws before.........oh wait a minute......
Great. I'll sleep soundly tonight
I personally never mention trans men as they are not the ones clamouring for more rights than everyone else - in fact they are generally quietly getting on with their lives. As are genuine trans women to be fair. Its the noisy trans rights activists who bang on about trans righs - they already have equal rights to everyone else, so what other rights do they want exactly? The right to compete unfairly in female sport, the right to access protected women's spaces...
Excellent article from Alex Massie, specifically with regard to Dolatowski.

Indeed Rosie51.
Women prisoners who don't go along with this get extra punishment - eg removal of privileges & a record of not cooperating, which will hinder them when parole is considered .
I guess natural selection has favoured women who will go along with whoever has power, hence the numbers of those keen to be 'on the right side of history' and pandering to men taking over women's rights.
*thought
I wonder what damage Dolatowski will inflict on anybody in the female estate who misgenders or fails to acknowledge them as a 'woman'. I though being in prison, loss of liberty, was the punishment for the crime, now it seems the risk of being beaten by a man is added.
Is it the sunk costs fallacy that motivates them, I wonder.
'I'm too far in now to change tack'.?
FarNorth I wonder if there will be an answer from any of them. I suspect not, because they can't have it both ways.
