Meghan Markle Faced 'Disgusting and Very Real' Threats in the U.K., Former Counterterrorism Head Says

So possibly NOT figments of fevered imaginations.

In a new interview with Channel 4 News, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police said that there were genuine threats to the Duchess of Sussex's life while she lived in the U.K.

Neil Basu opened up about the alarming allegations amid his resignation as Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations for the Met Police in an interview released Tuesday. Basu, 54, is leaving the force after 30 years, during which he earned the Queen's Police Medal for distinguished service and served as the senior-most officer for the counterterrorism unit of the Met Police starting in March 2018 — two months before Meghan and Prince Harry's royal wedding.

"You were in charge of royal protection. How would you characterize the threats that Meghan and Harry received?" journalist Cathy Newman asked in a quick clip shared on Twitter.

"Well, disgusting and very real," Basu replied, calling extreme right-wing terrorism the "fast-growing threat" to the country.

I m sure Meghan will be thrilled that you no longer want to discuss her and she’s no longer in your life Joseanne
That’s such good news

Nevermind Meghan, I would have thought that some people on GN will be thrilled that I no longer want to discuss her on these threads, which is what I meant if you read carefully!
Am I being picked on today for some reason? X 5

It's an interesting conundrum Joseanne

If we discuss Meghan and Harry we're obsessed and in trouble on GN.
When you say you're not interested you're in trouble on GN.

It is also worth noting that the M and H bit was a very small part of it and a shame that is the bit that got all the headlines

It is. The threats are real and to focus on just two people in particular is diversionary.

It is an ok casual expression unless a poster wants to show off what they have just googled, as Volver does.😂

Ah. Googling is now showing off. Presumably talking about something you’d heard/read isn’t ? Just checking,

Just to clarify my comment "she is history" which drew raised eyebrows x 3 (Volver, Lucca, Blossoming). I meant it as a slang expression implying that Meghan no longer has any importance in my present life, her royal career is over, and I have no inclination to discuss further.
Just like someone might say their ex is history, although not dead.

Oh dear. Well based on your comment that was my reaction, nowt to with me if others think alike. Plenty on here who agree with each other too.

Isn’t the slang expression that someone is past history? This puts a different slant.

Oreo Wed 30-Nov-22 18:26:13

Lucca I think Volver is old enough to answer for herself if she wants to.[wink

Yes Joseanne looks like your innocent remark has sparked them off!😂

Is it only me who sometimes thinks they've wondered into a lost chapter of "Mallory Towers"?

Calendargirl Wed 30-Nov-22 18:52:43

Malory Towers?

Can’t remember all the names, but who is playing Darrell, Alicia, Gwendolyn, Sally…..?

grannydarkhair Wed 30-Nov-22 18:57:02

volver Just noticed your comment about the Borg. I want to be Seven of Nine, I love/d her character. My other all time favourite is/was Data, I’ve had more than one quite erotic dream about him 😍

Curious that Neil Basu is thought to have a bitter agenda, that he mentions MM because he wants attention. This is a high ranking, generally well regarded police officer. 30 years of public service but let’s all diss him because he reports that Meghan was subjected to racist abuse.
His racial background isn’t relevant either , well it is to me, but not it seems to all if us. I believe heritage does matter, it influences our world view. I’ve lived experience of the kind of casual misogyny women deal with. I’m white British. I have no lived experience as a male or a person of colour . Mr Basu has lived experience I can learn from.

I'd like to be Darrell but I'm probably more like Alicia... wink

Basu mentioned Meghan because Cathy Newman asked, "You were in charge of royal protection. How would you characterize the threats that Meghan and Harry received?"

He answered the question.

Please read what I actually said if you’re going to tag me. You posted that MM was not worth discussing and I pointed out that you were participating in quite a long discussion about MM.

My eyebrows remain in their normal position.

Joseanne Wed 30-Nov-22 21:14:22

With respect I disagree Blossoming. At that point I had contributed barely 2 lines on a discussion that hadn't even got started. As I said when challenged, I meant "in my opinion", "to my mind", she was not worth discussing and I had no intention of participating.
However, if posters want to draw me into a discussion about how I express myself, rather than the subject matter, then that is their perogative but I will continue to explain what I actually meant until everyone is bored to tears.

Do you mean the Met Police?

VioletSky

I believed this was happening all along but maybe now some will gain some perspective.

If any member of my family were subject to this and I had the money to protect them, I would. Especially where minors are involved.

So it makes for an uncomfortable truth about how much support they were really given and why they spoke out

They have been saying I t was happening all along. They DID say why they left, in the Oprah interview.

I think the news coming out the last 2 days is just the tip of the iceburg and we will see much more validated in the future.

Calendargirl Thu 01-Dec-22 07:12:05

Yes Volver, I rather cast you as Alicia, in my own mind.

Could be wrong of course.

smile

VioletSky Thu 01-Dec-22 07:16:52

People are just so determined to look for lies and have branded them

Zoejory Thu 01-Dec-22 07:18:06

I am Darrell

volver Thu 01-Dec-22 07:20:43

Shall we have a vote on who might be Gwendolyn?

Zoejory Thu 01-Dec-22 07:27:32

Gwendolyn was not Miss Popular but a rather excellent and interesting character

Surely tautology?
Can you have “future history” ?

tickingbird Thu 01-Dec-22 08:23:19

So, for instance, someone might believe that a former Police Officer is fixated on a particular couple and sees a way of using them for publicity, when that's not true

Volver , You have no more idea than anyone else regarding the above. How do you know whether this man has an agenda? YOU DON’T ( capitals for emphasis of course). You don’t know if he’s being truthful or maybe it’s his truth - hmm?

Either way, others have every right to discuss their opinions on here - whether you agree or not is irrelevant smile

25Avalon Thu 01-Dec-22 08:25:05

Slang isn’t grammatically correct and you also have idiomatic speech.
