God help us if Labour get in, I can’t stand Sir Kier Starmer and his deputy ………….. oh no!

Well if you’re actually in Shropshire and the same constituency as mine Shropshirelass, my vote will cancel yours out!

When you consider that over 80% of UK newspaper readers read the right wing press - Daily Mail, The Sun, The Telegraph, The Daily Express, The Times etc and newspaper readership is the most influential factor in determining voting intentions, it is remarkable that adding the Conservative, Reform and UKIP numbers gives only 33%. Perhaps at long last people are beginning to resist the right wing propaganda.

I suppose that there is only so much that a government can lie and cheat it’s way without the voter refusing any longer to be taken for fools.

Even the almighty Mail can’t gaslight or con it’s readers quite so easily. I see this week it’s been banging it’s drum about the
Labour policy of revisiting the charitable status of public schools.

Not something that over 90% of the population will be exercised by, but imo they have never reached that status looking at the legal definition.

I suspect that many more will stand down when it gets nearer to the GE, ronib. I know they were supposedly given a deadline to declare that they weren't standing again, but the party can't prevent them standing down at a later date. When they've got their next job sorted...

Well you may speculate as you wish but until there’s some hard data, it looks as if most of the rats are staying on this particular ship.

I am not really interested in converting people. I am not religious or interested in alternatives to religion.
I push labour leaflets through doors and try not to call people stupid.

I always read those leaflets Galaxy you have the right attitude so keep up the good work.
Too much extremism puts voters off all politics.

^Some traditional Tory voters are turning to Reform.^

I suspect that they are not traditional tory voters at all. There was a big push to recruit Farage's mob before the 2019 GE and the BP didn't contest seats. I suspect that it's they who are turning to Reform. It's the Brexit Party renamed.

Listening to Farage it is the BNP renamed imo.

Shades of Mosley about that man.

Some traditional Tory voters are turning to Reform. Like their policies or not the Tories haven’t delivered properly on their election promises. If anything they are more like a socialist party than Labour and are also in disarray. After one party has been in power for a long time the electorate like a change. I think a lot of Tories recognise that and are jumping off the sinking ship by announcing they will stand down at the next election.

A quick Google search
91 mps stood down in 2015
149 mps stood down in 2010
26 I understand standing down now
Therefore biggest rat exodus 2010
Smallest now?

World's gone bonkers.

The Tory Party are really Socialists, apparently. And if the real Labour Party get in we'll be in a terrible state. (not like we are now, thank goodness.) confused

But we're not allowed to hold people in absolute contempt.

OK, I'll try.

'They nearly all vote as instructed' absolutely is though.
I think lots of leaflets will be thrown away, most of them probably, I still think listing the local achievements of the labour councillors will have more influence than telling people on social media that they shouldnt read a particular newspaper.

MaizieD Sun 04-Dec-22 09:08:48

Just as a matter of interest, do you think those leaflets have any effect at all?

'Conversion' isn't confined to religion or its alternatives. It's related to persuading people to think differently. This sets me wondering how people ever come to change their minds. Is it something in the air or is it engagement with other people and their ideas...

Pointing out that the media people believe is not telling the truth is not telling people that they are stupid.

I know they should instead be listening to people who hold them in absolute contempt. When will they learn.

So you keep saying, Galaxy.

How many people have you 'converted'? How do you counter the lies and distortions of the right wing media?

And they habitually get their attitudes and political opinions from the right wing press - the Daily Mail, Telegraph, Daily Expres The Sun and The Times and they nearly all vote as instructed.

That is very close to the truth

WWM2 Thank you for your excellent post.

But many people still believe that the Tories are better, that austerity will bring about prosperity and that Labour bankrupted the country and they will not be convinced otherwise. Sadly.

I just wish ‘many people’ could be bothered to do some evidence checking rather than relying on the media. It’s not difficult to do at all. There’s a weird snob value attached to voting Tory in some peoples minds, I’m convinced they think it defines them as middle class, and don’t think about politics any more deeply.

Thanks to everyone who quoted Wwmk2’s excellent post. Thanks to you Casdon for your excellent post.

In 97 I was working in a very deprived, former mining community. Levels of depression, substance dependence/abuse kept increasing. A Community School which included a library, room for health visitors/midwives, room for the area social work team, room for the substance misuse team and yes, the community bobbies were regulars calling in for a brew. The sure start family centre worked closely with the multi agency teams
Cameron started the closure of surestart because he believed the resources were taken by families like his. Well, that was his ideological mindset.
We need a Labour government. We need rid of these ideologues who lack intellect, research bases, or compassion
