That reception - don't forget its message.

The topic of the day on Gransnet is race, but amid the angry exchanges, don't forget what that reception was all about. It was to raise awareness of violence against women and girls as part of the UN 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

A video of Camilla's speech at that reception is on Youtube. So are two previous speeches by her in previous years. Violence against women and girls is an endemic global problem that doesn't go away. The UN 16-day campaign should get equal coverage in the worldwide media and on social networks as the incident with Ms Fulani and Ms Hussey - but it seems to be over-shadowed.

Thanks for the links, elegran, and for the reminder that what's caused such a stir is not what's most important about the reception's purpose.

Personally, the more I read about what happened the more I think it was a deliberate publicity stunt by Fulani. As someone else has said elsewhere "why couldn't she have said something like "I'm English but my parents were Afro-Caribbean"?

eazybee Sun 04-Dec-22 10:16:32

Yes, a timely reminder, Elegran. Thank you.

Oreo Sun 04-Dec-22 10:25:38

Because that would have been too easy and normal Baggs

Tbh Elegran I think that whole reception and the real reason for it has been lost now, ironic given Fulani’s job.
A big shame.

MaizieD Sun 04-Dec-22 10:33:02

I'm not altogether sure why Baggs has thought fit to risk setting off the whole miserable conversation again with a comment which would have been more appropriate on the designated thread, but , heigh ho, let's keep on stirring the pot...

LizzieDrip Sun 04-Dec-22 10:41:53

Thanks Elegran. Yes the whole sorry, alleged ‘racism’ issue has unfortunately overshadowed the real point - that violence and discrimination against women and girls is a terrible blight on humanity worldwide.

Galaxy Sun 04-Dec-22 10:46:37

I think that people generally find talking about male violence really difficult.

MaizieD Sun 04-Dec-22 10:58:16

Galaxy

I think that people generally find talking about male violence really difficult.

Do you mean male violence as it affects them, Galaxy? I do understand that women experiencing it may find it difficult.

But the question, for me, is how do we counter male violence
and how can we change it in a global context?

What can we do about the violence towards women being shown in Ukraine? Or the taliban beating women who venture out without a male escort in Afghanistan? Or women being beaten to death for not covering their hair in Iran?

It sickens me but I feel helpless in the face of it.

Oreo Sun 04-Dec-22 11:03:28

We as individuals can’t change the culture in other countries, especially ones where horses are valued more than women.
All governments can do is to try and influence, but in the end the internet may do more as how things are in other countries gets through to younger women, and they will be the ones to try and change things for themselves with the help of their menfolk.

Galaxy Sun 04-Dec-22 11:08:27

No I think people in general find it difficult, for the reasons you have mentioned, but also I think it's almost impossible for people to get their head around the issue, I sometimes put the statistics on here and people dont really believe them. Then of course theres the 'not all men's conversations and so on. I think it's the fundamental issue faced by feminism as it's the issue that impacts all women.

Galaxy Sun 04-Dec-22 11:11:13

Sorry random apostrophes!

MerylStreep Sun 04-Dec-22 11:18:29

Shame plays a big part in women not wanting to talk about it.

VioletSky Sun 04-Dec-22 11:19:03

If I were to attend that event, I would do so with a good understanding of what women of different demographics face.

Racism is a direct threat to many women and also the cause of violence towards many women.

So this sort of questioning had no place there because questioning someone about if they are "really British" contributes to a larger issue.

An issue that causes violence to women.

Madgran77 Sun 04-Dec-22 11:42:59

I do understand your point Elegran and it is a pity that reasoned thoughtful debate has got lost both on GN and in parts of the media! However within a wider context than the particular incident and Lady Hussey, (who within her own context was trying to do a good job), Violet makes a good point!

Callistemon21 Sun 04-Dec-22 12:04:40

Thank you Elegran
I do hope this important discussion thread doesn't get derailed.

This event was convened with the very best of intentions.
Women from around the world gathered to highlight the abuse and atrocities against women and, let us not forget, young girls too, around the world.

uatv.ua/en/olena-zelenska-became-a-guest-of-the-queen-consort-camilla-s-reception-organized-on-the-day-for-the-elimination-of-violence-against-women/

Olena Zelenska had already addressed the House of Commons about the atrocities committed by Russian soldiers against women and girls - and young boys too - in Ukraine.

All around the world women and girls suffer brutality, rape and death and the real purpose of this event seems to have been overshadowed by other events.

Elegran Sun 04-Dec-22 12:06:17

I am not saying that sort of questioning had no place, VioletSky. I am saying that that as a result of the raising of a different issue at the event, the original question of men's violence to women has been overshadowed and largely ignored. The media have run with one immediate controversy to the detriment of another ongoing concern. Gransnet posters are tearing strips off each other about reactions to one issue while barely acknowledging the other.

Meanwhile, over a period of sixteen days (the length of the UN's annual focus on the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls) over 2,000 women worldwide of all races and nationalities will be killed by their partner or a member of their own family.

Callistemon21 Sun 04-Dec-22 12:06:36

It sickens me but I feel helpless in the face of it.

We need to shine a light on it all.
Not let this be obscured or called whataboutery.

Smileless2012 Sun 04-Dec-22 12:12:42

It's such an important issue Elegran and the statistics of women worldwide murdered by their partner or a family member, are horrifying.

VioletSky Sun 04-Dec-22 12:16:20

www.feminist.com/resources/ourbodies/viol_race.html

Race, sexual orientation, age, disability

Those things all put women at greater risk of violence from men

The issues are intertwined

Not at all forgotten

MerylStreep Sun 04-Dec-22 12:21:14

Yeh!!!
Some wonderful news 😄

Elegran Sun 04-Dec-22 12:22:57

Then it needs to be shown that they are not forgotten, by keeping up discussion of the issue.

Smileless2012 Sun 04-Dec-22 12:25:42

Yes that is wonderful news Meryl but a terrible price has been paidsad.

Elegran Sun 04-Dec-22 12:25:45

Wonderful news indeed, MerylStreep. Let us hope that private attitudes follow the abolition of the public face of punitive misogyny.

VioletSky Sun 04-Dec-22 12:27:05

Then start a thread that doesn't accuse others of forgetting an issue when actually the discussion was relevant to part of the issue

That's all I'm here to say

VioletSky Sun 04-Dec-22 12:28:50

Not the best start to a topic that is important too and affects many of us
