Three boys aged eight, 10 and 11 have died after falling into an icy lake near Solihull on Sunday
Could have been our grandchildren - tragic

Poor families and poor boys. What a terrible way to die 😢

Purplepixie Wed 14-Dec-22 11:15:28

I cried when I first heard the news. Those poor parents.

Juicylucy Wed 14-Dec-22 11:32:10

There Christmas will be sad memories every year now. How very very sad such tragedy 🥲

Heartbreaking.
And yes absolutely!
Although this gov appears to think that it's not worth the money as they failed to do so in pandemic.
I'm sure we all remember the tufty club about road safety/under 5s kept off streets/ dangers of ice/strangers!/ Kerb drill! And more recently "Charlie says" so popular it was used in a pop song too.
We owed it to our children to advise warn and protect them if only from their own naivety and exuberance. Lots of fun with safety net always.
Bless their little souls and peace to the families too

It's natural for some to ask why such young children were out at water area alone, not blaming. Just reaction to tragedy.

While it was uncomfortable having to wait longer in the freezing cold for my DGS to be let out of school late yesterday I was pleased to find that his class (and presumably all the rest of KS1 & 2) was held back for a talk of the dangers of playing near water and frozen lakes/ponds. I hope this has happened in all schools.

Rest in peace little Christmas angels
Their poor devastated parents will have to dig deep to go forward from the absurd loss of their beautiful children.
Let us pray they find the reserves to do that 🙏

It is a terrible tragedy but it won’t stop it happening again. Just today there has been a thread in our local Nextdoor page about teenagers stepping onto the frozen river in the local park, this after all the news coverage about the Solihull tragedy. They were approached and warned of the danger by a dog walker who then put the warning out to parents on Nextdoor. Among the responses was a man saying ‘why bother warning anybody. They won’t listen’ and he’s probably right. He was immediately verbally attacked for being heartless.
Same thing happens in the summer. A couple of hot days and we start hearing about people drowning in lakes, quarries and rivers, but woe betide anyone who dares to say why are some people so stupid.
This latest horror was about young children so they were perhaps too young to appreciate the dangers but if they’re old enough to be out without an adult then they needed to have it explained to them. Sorry if I seem harsh but it’s common sense to me.

One of the saddest stories in an endless stream of sad stories we hear these days. The BBC newsreader (Joanna Gosling) saw the story breaking on her screen and couldn't hold back the tears as she had to read it out. It just reflects the scale and shock of this tragedy. I watched it and was weeping with her.

I hope lessons will be learned from this tragedy. Every school in the country should now be talking to children about the dangers of playing near water and on ice.... xxx

travelsafar, I thought that but it could be an adult out for a walk on his/her own and tried to help and hasn't been missed . No stone unturned.

Bazza Wed 14-Dec-22 13:17:34

I had it drummed into me as a child never to go on a frozen pond, but I did it anyway and fell through, luckily only up to my waist. I still remember the long walk home! I never did it again. Beyond sad for the families.

Heartbreaking. Poor families.

Rosina Wed 14-Dec-22 14:57:58

I could not get the newspaper image out of my mind of the ten year old boy who tried to save the children in the water, and died himself. What a courageous, wonderful child, and what a man he might have grown into. It is beyond words.

I’ve just heard on news that the 6yr old in hospital has died. An appalling tragedy and I believe three were from the same family. No words really, just sadness. RIP little one.

Kate1949 Wed 14-Dec-22 18:09:24

Yes that's just been on our local news
Poor little soul.

Patsy70 Wed 14-Dec-22 18:18:30

How on earth do you recover from such a tragedy?

Milly12 Wed 14-Dec-22 18:23:13

I remember when there used to be “public information” adverts warning about the risks of crossing the road, jumping into deep water, playing on frozen lakes etc.
Perhaps they need to come back but hard to imagine this government organising it!!

Rosina Wed 14-Dec-22 18:31:45

Truth is, Milly, that no government can save everyone from all potential accidents. I saw a post yesterday criticising a local authority because a pond was frozen over and the writer said the pond should have been fenced off at once 'by the council'. How can they fence off all frozen areas of water? Cars skid, mount the pavement and kill people - do we demand crash barriers along the kerb of every pavement? I would like to think that schools and parents impress on children the dangers in the world, but sadly they will still happen. This tragedy is beyond words.

Just announced on 10pm news that the other lad, 6 short years of age, has died too.

VioletSky Thu 15-Dec-22 07:31:59

Oh no, I thought with the ages some might be the same family, awful
