World-famous entertainers will perform at Windsor Castle as part of a weekend of celebrations to mark the King's coronation, it has been announced.
The concert will be broadcast on the BBC on 7 May featuring "global music icons", orchestras and a diverse "coronation choir".

Which 'global icons' would you expect to see on stage?

These concerts are always cringeworthy as they're usually organised by non gig organisers! Try in Ng to please all the people just doesn't works. Personally I'm fed up of Brian May/sir Beatle McCartney/Louise(?)/anyone called spice/dreadful live versions of rap/anyone owning a has been or flagging career being trundled out as "trendy" or"popular". I'd go to the classical side with choirs of all ages ,home grown talent and celebration of all British productions. Having it kept tight and shorter than the excruciating 3hours+ usually Imposed and pleeeease no outdoor performances , concert halls are there for a reason and televised coverage is enough for anyone.this avoids disruption to highways and byways and ensuing costs.
As for street parties? Yuk! Awful and of the forelock tugging era, set up in the days when there was no TV for majority and a jelly and bunting party was as good as it got for most! Old hat and cringey.

What a huge disappointment he is, agreeing to continue with this pomp when the country is in dire straits.
NHS, Foodbank, homeless etc etc. It’s sickening.

Gabrielle56 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:42:27

I'm no monarchist trust me, I just like a thread on subject, save time!

volver Tue 24-Jan-23 11:43:59

I didn't mean you. Best RTFT before telling people how you think they should post.

You going to have a go at Kalu?

I would like to see choirs from each of the four nations like they have on Last Night of the Proms as well a a gospel choir.

Please, only one elderly pop artiste and preferably one who still has a voice like Tom Jones.

Modern, diverse acts and a tribute to musical theatre would float my boat and hopefully Charles would have a say in the overall content because I don’t think the late Queen was all that bothered about music so was probably happy to just leave it to the organisers.

Gabrielle56 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:46:53

Agree that the old "mumbo Jumbo" needs a serious scrapping too. Away with the "born to rule" poo.and the anointing with dishwater from the Jordan puddle! Talk about heathen idolatry? They're the most ruthless cruel and brutal that was on offer for the last 1000+ years that's all folks! Slashing and burning their way to the top does not mean that they're the best, slim it down to modern values and try and persuade us that less is more in straitened times . TV specials on iPlayers should do it!

volver Tue 24-Jan-23 11:48:39

Yes Gabrielle, but what about the concert? I mean that's what the thread is about. hmm

nanna8 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:51:43

I hope it is as gaudy and glitzy as possible. If you’re gonna do it, do it properly and entertain everyone. That’s all it is ,really, entertaining the masses.

If it is anything like the cringeworthy jubilee "concert" I will not be listening .... what is wrong with a lovely orchestral concert with British performers? We have wonderful orchestras and musicians... the Kanneh Masons, Welsh harpists, Nichola Benedetti. Charlie Boy loves opera ... let's have a quality concert please!

Oh, how I agree with you! These dumbed down concerts are embarrassing. They must give such a bad impression internationally. Even for those who enjoy that kind of thing, they seem inappropriate for the occasion.

I don’t think it will happen, though.

Lizzie44 Tue 24-Jan-23 11:56:20

I'm another that thinks the monarchy is well past its sell-by date. But if we have to keep it (for now!) surely the coronation shouldn't be so lavish, particularly with the current disgraceful levels of poverty and hardship in the the UK. A simple inauguration as happens in other European monarchies would suffice. But no, we have to go the whole hog - bread and circuses once more. If there's to be a concert I suggest the inclusion of Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come".

SachaMac Tue 24-Jan-23 12:05:22

I probably won’t watch the concert and tbh most of the people I’d really love to see up there on stage are either dead or past their best vocally now so I agree it’s time to wheel out and showcase some of our younger talent. I do quite like the idea of Noddy Holder, possibly belting out Mama weer all Crazee now! smile

According to Harry in his ‘Spare’ book, the Queen wore yellow ear plugs for the Golden Jubilee Concert, and was able to nod away without actually having to listen to any of it.

My only wish is that Paul McCartney is not there. I have never liked him since he left the Beatles. My own Supergroup would be good, Phil Collins on Drums, Eric Clapton on Guitar and Mark Knopfler on Guitar, Sw them once at The Royal Albert Hall together with Nathan East and they were superb. Of Course we shouldn't forget Pink Floyd either. Hmm seems like leaving PM out wasn't my on;y choice after all.

Amalegra Tue 24-Jan-23 12:11:11

Reports appear to suggest it is all very ‘woke’ with refugees-hopefully legal ones- and an LGBTQ++++ choir. Plus the NHS which is pretty much on equal terms with the C of E as a religion these days! Sorry to sound so cynical but I am heartily sick if all these agendas being pushed at me in the name of ‘diversity’ etc. Especially as we were told today that there is no counselling locally funded by ‘our NHS’ for my autistic granddaughter who is struggling at school and has high anxiety. Is neurodiversity not diverse enough these days? The online apps, provided by a CHARITY are no substitute for face to face! ‘Inclusivity’ celebrated in the coronation? More for some than others- your face has to fit the woke agenda these days!

Bromley Tue 24-Jan-23 12:15:37

Are the artistes offering their services free of charge….or are we footing the bill for this too.
People could listen to this I suppose when they are in the food banks, or shivering indoors.

semperfidelis Tue 24-Jan-23 12:16:30

Give Charles a chance! He's a cultured man interested in a wide variety of music. I'm sure he will consult others too.
I do agree about the old rockers. It is very painful to hear Paul McCartney, and Rod Stewart gave a dire performance at the jubilee last year. Hoarse, does not begin to describe it. Surely they are damaging their vocal chords?

icanhandthemback Tue 24-Jan-23 12:35:14

Amalegra, there are plenty of stars out who are ND. Billy Eilish has Tourettes, many have ADHD, Susan Boyle is ASD, etc, etc. It probably wouldn't help funding where it's needed but if it helps shine a light for those who are ND, it would be helpful.

DeeDe Tue 24-Jan-23 12:41:42

Only thing I’d be excited about is to then see him abdicate.
And take that fake scheming woman with him ..

specki4eyes Tue 24-Jan-23 12:47:58

Let us hope that the croaky geriatrics are not dragged up on the stage again. At Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee how mortally embarrassing was it to watch the sad spectacle of Diana Ross shuffling onto stage lip-syncing a song from the 70s whose lyrics graphically described the sex act. (CHAIN REACTION..listen to it!)
I'd enjoyed watching the Paddington Bear/QE surprise skit and the wonderful pageant that followed. But Diana Ross? Paul McCartney? Elton John? Oh please, no! Not because of their age per se...its just that they can no longer hold a note!

Sawsage2 Tue 24-Jan-23 12:51:21

It seems too near to the late Queen's jubilee concert. I might watch it for an hour or maybe have a quiet trip to the park on my mobility scooter.

Neilspurgeon0 Tue 24-Jan-23 13:00:20

notspagetti nailed it right up thread “same old same old”. There will not be a decent folk singer or outstanding jazz trombonist in sight obviously

nipsmum Tue 24-Jan-23 13:06:39

Why do we need all these celebrations. Surely one day is good enough. The actual Coronation gets the job done. That's all I am interested in.

Chris732day Tue 24-Jan-23 13:31:05

While not a supporter of King Charles III, but not wishing a Republic I do wonder if this Coronation can be afforded and if it could be could not the money being spent used to fund Social Care and NHS so creating a much more sustained occasion. Granted it would not be sufficient to solve either crisis, but every little bit helps.

Keffie12 Tue 24-Jan-23 13:43:19

He was sworn in at a private ceremony the day after the Queen past. There is no need for any of this. I shan't be watching so whatever from me. The cost in this time is ridiculous

The monarchy needs to reform like the European monarchies, has or be retired out. I personally don't think there will be a monarchy in a generation or so time.

3nanny6 Tue 24-Jan-23 14:00:01

Glitzy celebrations and a weekend of concerts as many celebrate the coronation.
Money could be better spent as I have noticed that the three donation bins for homeless (food for the foodbank) have been almost entirely empty for almost 2 weeks. That is because the rising cost of food is hitting many peoples pockets and not much left over to help out the foodbanks.
Last week at Tescos I counted 9 people begging outside the shop.
That is okay I suppose let us all just turn a blind eye to all those problems and praise the Royal family with their riches and millions and God bless them as they would never have to use a foodbank.
