World-famous entertainers will perform at Windsor Castle as part of a weekend of celebrations to mark the King's coronation, it has been announced.
The concert will be broadcast on the BBC on 7 May featuring "global music icons", orchestras and a diverse "coronation choir".

Which 'global icons' would you expect to see on stage?

polly123 Tue 24-Jan-23 14:03:14

Please, not Sam Ryder who has me reaching for earplugs. I suppose it will be McCartney etc. as others have predicted. But hopefully not Rod Stewart croaking along with Sweet Caroline again! Would also like to see the Stones especially Jagger dancing around or Paul Simon. Don't fancy the current mainstreamers and would love someone 'edgy' but, I suspect, they might not be his style.

Let us hope that the croaky geriatrics are not dragged up on the stage again. At Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee how mortally embarrassing was it to watch the sad spectacle of Diana Ross shuffling onto stage lip-syncing a song from the 70s whose lyrics graphically described the sex act. (CHAIN REACTION..listen to it!)
I'd enjoyed watching the Paddington Bear/QE surprise skit and the wonderful pageant that followed. But Diana Ross? Paul McCartney? Elton John? Oh please, no! Not because of their age per se...its just that they can no longer hold a note!

Totally agree with you.Everybody pretending that Diana Ross was marvellous the other year and nodding away. These ageing stars are embarrassing to watch.
Why do we need a LGBT choir? Why not just a good choir that will no doubt have some LGBT members in it anyway?
What’s next? A trans choir? A cross dressing choir made up of Grayson Perry lookalikes pretending to be little girls?

Wonder why the Queen wore ear plugs to avoid listening to the
Jubilee Concert, she didn’t attend, Harry confused again ?

Jaberwok Tue 24-Jan-23 14:12:53

Such nasty, sarky comments, no wonder a lot of people don't post on here anymore. If this is what republicans look and sound like, God save us from them. Suggest some research into the Coronation, even though history isn't a lot of peoples forte.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Tue 24-Jan-23 14:17:08

How about some of the Rock Choir having a part in the concert? I'm not in it but have family who are members/leaders and they would be a good representative of 'ordinary' folk, and without any big price ticket attached. And they are able to carry a tune, unlike some of the geriatric acts characterising some of the previous royal events.

Rosina Tue 24-Jan-23 14:18:26

Sad, isn't it, Jaberwok ? I find it tiring when it is impossible to have a discussion embracing all views without every third post dripping bile and sarcasm. I don't know what happened to tolerance of others views - no doubt someone will tell me any minute now.

I love Gransnet. A platform for everyone to voice their opinions. Best reading ever! It never surprises me that there are “bomb-throwers” on both sides of the aisle, trying to change the course of chosen subject, no matter what it is.

Same here in the USA. Always some crazy discourse going on with politics ruling the airwaves making everyone bonkers.

Monarchy or not? I don’t care. Coronation feeding-frenzy or not? I will probably keep an eye on it out of some sheer weird fascination.

It’s not going to change in my lifetime. This is the UK’s ball to pass around. Would be interesting to see how it ends.
Cheers!

The Coronation Concert is at Windsor not Buckingham Palace, there are many places he can play.

It was a joke ffs!!!!!!

I stand to be corrected but I believe that most other 'modern' monarchies don't even have coronations. Royalist or republican aside, why do we need it?

I think King Charles is probably the only one with that answer.

IrishDancing Tue 24-Jan-23 14:57:14

I don’t really care who performs at the Coronation concert - the snippets I saw of the Jubilee one were dire and embarrassing. I shall watch the Coronation though - history in the making whether you agree with it or not.
And I agree with Jaberwok - the same “nasty, sarky comments” from those who know it all - on every thread …

There was absolutely nothing in your post to suggest it was joke.

I was trying to be helpful.

SecondhandRose I've seen Lewis Capaldi 3 times and only on tv. First time I was shocked by his foul language. Thought perhaps he was drunk. Second and last time, language just as bad. I concluded perhaps he suffers from autism or Tourettes syndrome. Any info on this?

It is hard to get excited about a new king when you can`t get an ambulance, see a doctor or register with an NHS dentist. Food prices are rising and putting the heating on for many is causing anxiety and fear. Wonder how much the security for that lot will be.

Maremia Tue 24-Jan-23 16:45:40

What about a band from the Bahamas, for the Concert?

Maremia Tue 24-Jan-23 16:47:26

Yes, chris888, I asked up-thread if anyone knew how much the Coronation was going to cost us, but no-one seems to know.

Jaberwok Tue 24-Jan-23 16:54:35

It would be nice to have a classical concert , nothing heavy, Vaughan Williams, Chopin, Purcell perhaps, but I guess that wouldn't be popular so won't happen. Apart from the odd person, I've no idea who those performers named are, so couldn't say whether they're good, bad or indifferent. As for curtseying, if family members wish to bow and courtesy, that surely is up to them and nothing to do with anyone else. Members of the public certainly have that choice too. The coronation is definitely part of our history going back the first king of all England, Athelstan, who reigned 925 - 939 Every monarch except Edward Vth and Edward V111th have been crowned in Westminster Abbey. Jane Grey of course could be counted as uncrowned as well, but more often than not isn't. I think she should be as she was declared Queen ,but?? Other European monarchies do not have the long history of coronation,as mostly they didn't become one nation till many centuries later, and now don't exist.

Joseanne Tue 24-Jan-23 16:58:31

I'm sure the cost will be somewhere around the Jubilee costs. Was that £25 million? Plus security for the VIP guest list.
Just guessing!

Other European monarchies do not have the long history of coronation,as mostly they didn't become one nation till many centuries later, and now don't exist.

The first coronation in Denmark was that of Canute VI in St. Bendt's Church in Ringsted in 1170.

The first crowned ruler of Bosnia was Tvrtko I. His coronation, held on 26 October 1377, created the Kingdom of Bosnia.

According to legend, the first crowned monarch of Croatia was King Tomislav. He was allegedly crowned on the Plain of Duvno in 925.

The first coronation in Norway, and Scandinavia, took place in Bergen in 1163 or 1164.

The first crowned King of Serbia, Stefan Nemanjić, was crowned twice. In 1217, he was crowned in a Roman Catholic ceremony by papal legate with crown sent by the Pope.

Swedish monarchs were crowned in various cities during the 13th and 14th centuries

Five minutes on Wikipedia. We're not as special as you think we are.

Jaberwok Tue 24-Jan-23 17:18:24

I have not said that we are special, I just pointed out that we have a long history of coronations as a united country. Scandinavian countries do do things differently, the other countries you mentioned do not have monarchies any more. Why are you always so rude and dismissive?

volver Tue 24-Jan-23 17:22:29

I just pointed out that we have a long history of coronations as a united country.

That'll be 400 years then.

Less than Denmark, Sweden and Norway.

Rude and dismissive? Perhaps. Inclined to believe facts rather than preconceptions? Definitely.

Gillycats Tue 24-Jan-23 17:28:37

Sir Brian May would be brilliant. Joy Brookes, Ed Sheeran, Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys. Not Cliff Richard thank you x
