I’d love to name names but there’s no point as we all know who we’re talking about.
Plus, they’d go running to miss proclaiming they’d been bullied.

😁
That’s why the ‘some posters’ has to be used.

I get that - I have long felt that the rules of GN should be more explicit, as I never know whether naming names is permissible or not, or if it's ok in some circumstances and not others. If it's not then it might be risky to do it, particularly if the poster is touchy or 'trigger happy' on the report button.

But the fact remains that there will be people reading this and worrying if you are all talking about them, and others reading it who will assume you mean someone else when in fact they were the targets. It's quite unpleasant, really.

It really is a form of bullying isn’t it. But bullying with a hidden face.

Cliff Richard did a song called 'some people' didn't he?

He did! Well done Jane 😃
🎶 ‘Some people cryyy
Some people know why’ 🎶

But I am put off by 'some people' conversations, that's kind of the nature of an open forum there will be things you dont like.

Oreo Sat 04-Feb-23 13:40:20

Obviously not nonsense as shown by most of the posts on this thread.
Everyone feels entitled to comment but are put off by a few know it alls.

The way you have all continued this thread me included and the things that have been said proves why a lot don't post on it. The answers are all there in the posts and they are not going to encourage the non-joiners to join in.
Not for the faint-hearted the N&P threads, you have got to have a first in P.P.E or P.P.P. Oxbridge. Durham or Edinborough might just get your ideas listened to.
I think we need Volver back to put us all in our spots.grin

Nonsense. I haven’t got a first n anything and still feel perfectly entitled to post on N and P. I’ve learnt a lot from the threads too.

I do read the politics threads, watch Prime Minister's and First Priminister's question time, I prefer not to post on those threads

Another good ploy is to post, but not read!😃

😂

AreWeThereYet Sat 04-Feb-23 13:27:15

If that is your opinion then maybe you should stick to Chat etc.

Is this why so many avoid the N&P threads perhaps? Not quite 'get back to your knitting' but not exactly encouraging either

Varian, it's a very funny clip by the way smile

I work as a skilled employee in a manufacturing facility and I encourage the youngsters especially (ie under 40) to register to and vote. They say the same, what will make a difference? and I say collectively we make a difference. We cannot rely on 'other people' to make good decisions for us and in our interests. Poor people fought hard to get the right to vote and they fought hard because the people voting were not voting in our best interests. I encourage them to engage in researching what local and national candidates have to offer and what they agree with and what is important to them.

Poor people want warmth and shelter, good working conditions and food. Unfortunately atm I know first hand that many of work colleagues are struggling with these things as a basic need and they would be considered luxuries, especially heat. They are on pre paid meters and even though they are in double full time income households, they are having to rely on food banks or the bank of Mum and Dad in some cases and Mum and Dad are struggling too. Our work environment is cold too, so there really is no respite at work

I used to post on N&P as I am interested in politics. Unfortunately though, I really dislike the posting style of a few on there, ( who seem to be on there all day every day too! )
Pompous know it alls basically.

Exactly

If one;s ideas are not to be challenged how can one learn?

Good point, but, on here your not just challenging you get a Glasgow kiss.
Then it gets personal because they have a small apartment in Spain. Or others who have worked hard enough to enjoy are high standard of living ( but still know how many beans make five)
I’d better stop here as I’m not on MN where I can really say what I think.

kittylester Sat 04-Feb-23 12:41:08

Actually, I have not seen that poster for a while - hope she OK.

kittylester Sat 04-Feb-23 12:40:11

I have been asked to prove things when talking about lived experiences and even cross questioned as though I am lying about those experiences. That is not robust debate - that is rude and aggressive.

fancythat Sat 04-Feb-23 12:35:18

Maybe when anyone starts a thread in n&p, it should be headed
xxxxxxx chat or
xxxxxxxx dissection

then people will know what sort of thread it should end up being.

Seems to me the members of the site are split into two, maybe even same size, groups.

Myself, I would be the n&p chat

Maggiemaybe Sat 04-Feb-23 12:35:17

The old “some posters” thing. Actually more irritating than anything else

What’s the alternative then? Name names or quote posts and get banned? Tittle tattle to GNHQ? Turn a blind eye and pretend that personal attacks are all in the cause of robust debate? hmm

I’ve challenged offenders on the threads. It doesn’t make a blind bit of difference. Which is why I steer clear.

JaneJudge Sat 04-Feb-23 12:23:10

I feel we need an Ode to 'Some Posters' in the style of Dave Gorman

MaizieD Sat 04-Feb-23 12:21:39

But why should we have to defend anything ?

Sometimes it's helpful to know what is informing the views people hold. The only way you can find out is by asking them.

And if their views are based on misinformation, or no information at all, then many people would then respond with 'But what about a, b, or c?
Or ignore them.

What is worse, being 'challenged' or being ignored?

JaneJudge Sat 04-Feb-23 12:18:17

Grantanow

I can't say I've noticed much personal savagery on the N&P thread.
Plenty of robust views and challenging arguments. You may not want to make political statements but politics runs through all of our lives in different ways because it determines how public money is spent and what laws are enacted. I think it's better to have a say however ineffective that may be.

I agree with this
