Hardly!

Yes, I see what you mean! 🐘

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Feb-23 09:39:20

Please don’t get me wrong though, I’m not remotely interested in whether anyone is interested in politics or not.

What I am genuinely puzzled about is what posts of mine posters find so unpleasant etc.

I always try to address the subject under discussion without being personal or unpleasant.

I also think a lightness of touch helps. Taking oneself too seriously is always a mistake, and willingness to apologise if I get it wrong, or people feel affronted.

Party

Caleo Sat 04-Feb-23 09:36:39

Part political wrangling such as I usually see on TV is hard to understand, as so much of it is evasive and consists of rationalisations of party policies and ideologies. Caroline Lucas of the Green Party is exceptional in her explicit statements of facts and solutions to problems.

AGAA4

It doesn't mean that those who don't come on the N and P threads have no interest in politics. We all come on GN for different reasons.
I do head for these threads and watch Politics Live and keep up with the news but others may prefer more light-hearted threads having had enough of the news for one day.

I agree with this AGAA4 Sometimes I dip in but don't really see why I should justify my reasons to anyone else. It's not school and just the type of question to put people ever posting on the N&P thread, why should we share our thoughts if we don't want to? Is it for some survey or marketing purposes?

Baggs summed it up.
It’s not the subject matter that posters are avoiding, it’s some posters.

Of course it is. We all know that.
It’s the elephant on the thread, as it were.

You know I have been thinking about the comments on this thread and how people do not like their views challenged.

I do read, but do not necessarily contribute to other threads, and am often taken aback at the sheer nastiness and backbiting that posters seem to think is acceptable, often directed towards brand new members, but also to other longstanding members.

At least on the N&P you need to back up your opinion with evidence in order to be taken seriously 😄😄😄

How condescending- that is exactly why we don’t post.

Oh dear, my point exactly.

Agree. Even the op comes across as aggressive.
And 100% agree that criticism of those who appear not interested in N&P is pretty mean.
When I was a young mum of 3 it was enough to just get through the day. I barely had time to sit down.

Brilliant post Galaxy.

And I agree with sago and everyone else who asserts that it is the posters not the topic. Even the op is somewhat aggressive.

Galaxy Sat 04-Feb-23 09:15:50

It's not just about GN is it, it's a lack of understanding of other peoples lives. I am in awe of some of the families I work with, I am in awe that despite the circumstances they are facing they have got their children to.school and arent wearing their clothes on back to front, I am certainly not going to judge people for not having an interest in politics.

Baggs

That video, though funny, says as clearly as daylight why people don't go on N&P threads on GN: the scathing condescension they expect – having witnessed it from afar – to be met with should they dare to disagree with the usual N&P enthusiasts.

I suggest that many people's avoidance of GN N&P threads is for that reason and in no way an indication of their lack of interest in political matters.

Some will also stay away out of despair at the quality of many of our current politicians (of all stripes).

Agree. Does not mean we do not read the N&P threads just choose not to contribute.

Kandinsky Sat 04-Feb-23 09:05:05

I used to post on N&P as I am interested in politics. Unfortunately though, I really dislike the posting style of a few on there, ( who seem to be on there all day every day too! )
Pompous know it alls basically.

TerriBull Sat 04-Feb-23 08:59:04

I absolutely can't believe a poster would be told to go back to their knitting for presumably putting their head above the parapet, truly shocking!, There are times when it comes across as those who would perceive themselves to be the most tolerant and broad minded display the complete opposite. Bags' post describes the feelings of many on GN in a nutshell. I wonder why, just because some people don't always wish to discuss certain issues, there is a supposition that is because they are somehow too ignorant, shallow or not interested in doing so.

Not everyone has a thick skin like Urmstongran.
If she stopped feeding them, they’d be stuffed.

Agreed. I used to go on there and did contribute to some threads but I don’t have the interest in arguing with the vociferous few who dominate. Much better to leave them to it so they can fight amongst themselves. I prefer more light topics and there’s much on here that falls into that category. Doesn’t make me an airhead, I just cant be bothered!

That was painful, sorry 😞

Doodledog Sat 04-Feb-23 08:19:00

Maybe we should just cast off those people and their comments?
Would that decrease their numbers, do you think? Getting ribbed for spinning a yarn or for choosing a different pattern from others can be difficult, but comparing works in progress can cut out woolly thinking, and anyway no one style is better than the others. Listening to ideas about how to vary patterns can be very useful though, and not everyone is averse to trying out different stitches.

Absolutely. One superior poster told me to go back to my knitting.

What?? That must have been before my time grin. As an avid knitter and regular poster on N&P I would have leapt to your defence armed with a knitting needle!

I still like clutching at purls! Maybe we should just cast off those people and their comments?

How patronising.

Just because some of us do not use this platform to air our political views does not mean we have no interest or knowledge.

We’ll said Sago…

Well we know most politicians just like to spin a yarn!
