Does anyone believe that this can ever be an acceptable punishment in a modern civilised society?

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Feb-23 11:27:29

Of course not.

henetha Thu 09-Feb-23 11:28:36

Personally I don't. I cannot believe it's right to take someone's life, even if they are evil. But a life sentence should mean just that. Sometimes we are too lenient.

No.

Farzanah Thu 09-Feb-23 11:34:10

An MP apparently thinks it is Whitewave.

30p Lee doing a nice job of distraction, probably the main reason for his appointment to office. This has been discussed on Twitter as you would expect, and there are many reasons, apart from the moral aspect of state executions, why capital punishment should never be considered.

- juries are often unwilling to convict on a capital offence such as murder because they do not wish to have someone executed, therefore guilty parties may not be convicted.

- statistics show that it is not a deterrent; those USA states with the death penalty also have the highest rates of violent crime.

- it is not a deterrent as criminals do not expect to be caught.

That is without the risk of wrongful convictions.

NOT acceptable to me..

Farzanah Thu 09-Feb-23 11:37:27

The party is apparently intent on a path of self distraction.

There is a great video on Twitter of Ian Hislop on QT when Patel was Home Sec, demolishing any arguments for death penalty.

Callistemon21 Thu 09-Feb-23 11:43:02

No, it's not. Miscarriages of justice are not unknown.

I do sometimes wonder, though, if someone is convicted of more than one heinous crime, why their sentence should be current.
A consecutive sentence of sufficient length would mean they will not be released and cause terror again.

Rapist Metropolitan Police officer David Carrick has been handed 36 life sentences, with a minimum term of 32 years, after committing “violent and brutal sexual offences” against a dozen women.
They are to run concurrently.

Farzanah I see what you did there 😆 nice!

Callistemon21 Thu 09-Feb-23 11:43:51

Is it party policy or one maverick MP?

We must be fair
(Yes, really! 😀)

Anniebach Thu 09-Feb-23 11:47:37

Timothy Evans. Derek Bentley and many others , innocent but
hanged

Farzanah Thu 09-Feb-23 11:48:17

Yes Calli but he was appointed as deputy Tory party chair…..

GrannyGravy13 Thu 09-Feb-23 11:54:12

No never, two wrongs will never make a right.

Prison with no release is appropriate for heinous crimes like murder, violent rape, terrorism.

Urmstongran Thu 09-Feb-23 11:58:45

Definitely not.

Loss of liberty for life ought to be a real punishment. I do think we are too soft on killers. Look at Myra Hindley - conducting a lesbian relationship in prison for example. Other examples are available but you all know what I’m getting at. Prison needs to be a very tough deterrent and voters know it isn’t. We read about drugs and mobile phones, games consoles etc and ask ourselves ‘who’s the daftest?’

This is why some people want the death penalty back.

AGAA4 Thu 09-Feb-23 11:59:22

It won't happen. Capital Punishment has been relegated to the history books in the UK.

Yes you can't reverse a death sentence once it's been carried out.

However many sentences are not tough enough. A whole life sentence should be exactly that.

FannyCornforth Thu 09-Feb-23 12:13:04

No, I’ve always been totally anti the death penalty.
However, I did have stirrings of feelings of revenge regarding that filth Carrick.
But, I never thought I’d say these words, but hanging is too good for him.

Lee Anderson is just a big-mouthed oaf - I wonder how long he'll last in his new job.

Ailidh Thu 09-Feb-23 12:16:09

I'm with henetha. Life sentences should be so.

It’s gone well beyond scraping the bottom of the barrel, hasn’t it

NotSpaghetti Thu 09-Feb-23 12:21:18

No.

nadateturbe Thu 09-Feb-23 12:25:07

Don't agree with capital punishment but life should be life, sentences should be consecutive. Don't understand why they're not.
I think you need to give prisoners some concessions, otherwise they would be difficult to manage in prison, and you can take privileges away if they misbehave.
