He may well have a point, but what about his views on Qatar? Gay rights? Women’s rights? Human rights?
Basically he’s two faced. He’ll protest when it suits him. If it suits him to take the million plus pounds and be quiet, then he’ll do just that.

That's a rather bigoted look at our devastated poorer areas.

They are the areas where I was born and where members of what's left of my extended family live. That extended family pretty much disowned my father for leaving (he hated the suffocating atmosphere, the prurient neighbours minding everybody's business for them, and the general lack of horizons. I did make an effort to return to my roots with an open mind as I approached retirement but I was shocked to find that I was cold-shouldered as "not one of us" for having abandoned those roots and gone to university. Then they moan all the time that there's no work for the young people.

So I really can't find much affection for such people and their hostility to outsiders. They and their young people are free to go to university and move to the cities. There's nothing wrong with moving where the work is.

Apart from football I only became really aware of Lineker when we went to the football ground at Barcelona and the tour guide said how much they still revere Lineker at the club. It made me pay more attention to him as a person.

He didn't make a statement, he asked a question. And Gary is working class- I used to buy my fruit and veg from his stall at the market, sometimes his dad, sometimes himself.

The Tories know that by getting rid of migrants by any means possible will be a vote winner. They continually harp on about the cost of keeping them here knowing that it will anger enough people to possibly get them back on track to gain votes.

@Fleurpepper he clearly made a statement, and I have no argument with the sentiment. Read it again, “Am I out of order?” was the question.
His “class” origins (whatever that may mean) are supremely irrelevant. They neither validate nor invalidate his opinions.

Why then did he lose his principles in Qatar? A state with appalling human rights and which suppresses women! Gay rights in Qatar? How quickly we forget. Lineker is a self serving chaser of money! He will only support people if that support will not cost him money. He went to Qatar for money. That’s how much human rights mean to him!

I’ve been aware of the recent (or not so recent ) fascistic creep in Conservative rhetoric.

And it’s not just ‘red meat’.

It’s also angering that that some quarters of the Tories are making political capital from their very own mishandling of immigration for the past 13 years.

Migrants have been coming to this country for thousands of years, even before it was a country. We’re all descended from them.

Whilst some might think Britain was always sympathetic to Jewish suffering, there was some initial hostility to Jewish migrants before the war began. Migrants were either deemed ‘bogus asylum seekers’ who had no immediate need to leave their country, or ‘economic migrants’ who were merely migrating to reap the benefits of Britain’s economy. I am not a supporter of the current immigration Bill as it has been presented.

However, I cannot get excited about a tweet sent by a football pundit, is he lining himself up for a knighthood or a nice safe Labour seat?

No. He’s just a thoroughly decent bloke who says it like it is. My daughter was a history teacher and for years she’s been saying that things the government have been doing for the past decade or so are similar to those of the Weimar Rebublic. At the current time they’re down in the polls and they’re using these poor people in boats to divert peoples attention away from how badly they’re running the country. Forgetting to mention that the whole problem has escalated dramatically on their watch. Oh and they forget to mention that if we were still in the EU we could legally send people back to the first EU country they entered. As it is they plan to send them to Rwanda which is costing a fortune. It’s also imo just part of a plan to take us out of the ECHR. And what I still can’t understand is that the government ministers behind this are mainly the children or grandchildren of people that fled persecution from their own countries.
