The ferry companies will restrict the number of coaches and poorer people who now save up for a coach trip will either stay at home or fly.

Haven't heard the same about other ferry ports in UK. Some don't go to France eg Denmark. How about tge Scandinavian cruises, never hear of issues with passport checks when disembarking from the ship to go on a visit. Why the problem at Dover at Easter holiday time?

Probably because thousands of people travel through Dover every day. It's especially busy at the beginning of school holidays because so many coaches use the Dover crossing.

If there are a couple of crossings a day you have time to do the checks on either side of the channel.
If there are crossings every couple of hours with checks for both borders in the same place then queues and delays are inevitable, especially at peak times.

Dover is the shortest crossing and the most popular route.

The ferry terminal is on a very constricted piece of reclaimed land beneath the famous White Cliffs of Dover. It is not possible to build more checking points there.

That is why there is a bigger problem at Dover than anywhere else, but delays are mainly due to the fact that our bonkers Brexit government insisted on us leaving the EU, thus becoming a "third country" subject to extensive checks - in contrast with the freedom of movement within the EU that UK citizens previously enjoyed.

It's facile to blame the French. Yes maybe they can be obstructive, but I wonder what they say about us? We chose to leave the EU, I can't see that European countries owe us anything

Who in their right minds would have thought that checks would only apply to 'them furiner' but not us too?

If we are going to start this rich/poor argument, what about all the people who cannot afford to go on holiday at all let alone think of travelling to France.

The rich kid/poor kid argument in all its many forms always strikes me as the last throw of those who know their case is indefensible.

I think it is the mention of the word ski that gets some people going on the "rich" kids thing.
Which is wrong anyway, because kids from extra wealthy families are just as likely to end up in a yurt in Cornwall.

You’re right excursions from cruise ships dont go through passport control, my guess is that the Cruise Company have a special agreement, and a port official supervises passengers getting on and off the ship.
Some countries are sensitive, does getting off a cruise ship for an excursion in Miami need a US ESTA ?.

Cruise ships have to send a manifest detailing their passengers to every port they visit, the usual passport clearance is done at port/airport when you arrive in your embarkation country. All Uk passengers have to have a US ESTA before flying into USA, irrespective of whether you get off the ship after boarding.

The only Brexit impact I can think applies is we wait for checks because of. It is relatively seamless, fast, and easy at the Tunnel.

The Tunnel, in car, is fantastic - fast, far less emissions as from an on water ferry, efficient. Our home in Suffolk into France in no time at all.

The Tunnel, in car, is fantastic - fast, far less emissions as from an on water ferry, efficient. Our home in Suffolk into France in no time at all.

We tend to put the car on the Euro shuttle, but have gone down to the Alps by Eurostar.

Train was packed to the gills, luggage storage was an issue (we were going skiing so had our skis/boots as well as cases).

Much prefer the shuttle as I like the freedom to throw everything in the boot of the car.

I prefer Eurostar train to Le Tunnel by car. Daft reasons, but I like St. Pancras for a bit of shopping and proseco first, and also I feel more claustrophic in my car, in a metal box. (Like doubly trapped!) The downside is not having as much space for luggage.
I have great admiration for DH who towed our big caravan onto the ferries year after year parking it with aplomb amongst the lorries.

Private jet GrannyGravy13! No kidding, we had a pupil whose parents sent the helicopter to transfer them to Bristol Airport for the waiting private jet and on to ski chalet in Switzerland.

Children in private schools, like other children, go on school trips, for which coaches are used. What is more they stay in Youth Hostels, camp sites and other boarding schools in the country they are visiting.

My children went ot private schools in the 1980s and you can throw any ideas of cossetted rich (actually most weren't, just armed services and diplomatic) they were anything but. Parents of children in state schools would have expected much better accommodation and travel arrangements on school trips.

We had children in Private Schools in 80’s through to end 90’s, the school stopped ski trips due to low take up. The pupils preferred to go with friends and family as opposed to roughing it

Several of our children have gone on ski trips in sixth form college, hated the coach journey, wasn’t impressed with the hotel/food and as they were accomplished skiers ended up helping the beginners which they found to be the most enjoyable part of the whole week.
